I was at Abberton yesterday as you can imagine there is some big fish in there, carp, pike and bream as here! There must of been a shoal of bream about, I saw the cormorants catch 3 but I never saw one swallowed! They all had a go at eating the prize but keep dropping it in the water, retrieving it again, dropping it, retrieving it! Unless they swallowed it underwater which I doubt, it probably ended up at the bottom! Got a few more shots to post over time!
Hello everyone,
Yesterday's post was of a gentle appearing flower. Thought it might be fun to show one at the opposite end of the pendulum. I couldn't help but notice the plant which was next to the sidewalk. The horticulturalist must have had a lot of fun coming up with the colour combo!
I used Plantsnap to ID the bloom and the closest I could come up with was primula unless one of you knows otherwise.
Thanks a million for stopping by and for leaving me a comment. I do love hearing from you!
Have a marvelous day!

The Red Phalarope is a very rare breeding bird in Iceland! It's protected by strict laws so you are not allowed to go close to it during breeding season unless you have a special permit to do so.
The lagoon and the channels of the Okavango Delta were filled with beautiful elegant water lilies. We glided through the flowers in a mokoro carefully weaving a path without harming the flowers. The guides in Botswana respect the land and the animals and practice he ultimate in conservationism. Wish we could import some of their respect of nature into the USA.

It was a bit too hot for this old guy to go looking for Elephants or Alligators, so I had to settle for taking Pics of the Hummingbirds that frequent my backyard. I believe this is an Allen’s Hummingbird.
___________________________
The Allen's Hummingbird:
In early spring, a narrow strip of scrub and chaparral along the Pacific Coast starts buzzing with the sights and sounds of the coppery and green Allen's Hummingbird. Males flash their brilliant reddish orange throat and put on an elaborate show for the females, swinging in pendulous arcs before climbing high into the sky and diving back down with a sharp squeal made by their tails. These early migrants mostly spend the winter in Mexico, but some stay in southern California year-round.
Allen's Hummingbirds breed in a narrow strip of habitat along coastal Oregon and California. Male and female Allen's Hummingbirds use different habitats during the breeding season. The male sets up a territory overseeing open areas of coastal scrub or chaparral, where he perches conspicuously on exposed branches. The female visits these areas, but after mating she heads into thickets or forests to build a nest and raise the young.
The Allen's Hummingbird is a remarkably early migrant compared with most North American birds. Northbound birds may depart their wintering grounds as early as December, arriving on their breeding grounds as early as January when winter rains produce an abundance of flowers.
Like other birds, Allen's Hummingbirds use their feet to help control their body temperature. When it's cold outside they tuck their feet up against their bellies while flying, but when temperatures soar, they let their feet dangle to cool down.
The oldest recorded Allen's Hummingbird was at least 5 years old when she was captured and rereleased in California during banding operations in 2009. She was banded in the same state in 2004.

Almost a 5 hour (at least 6 miles) round trip hiking in Yellowstone. This is not a super popular trail especially if you are regular tourists. We hiked from lower fall all the way to 4R1 and then hiked back to artist point right around sunset and then back to lower fall. It was exhausting but when you see such beautiful and quiet view, you forgot about your tiredness and everything is worthy for it. And I was glad I brought my big camera with me:) It's heavy but it's good! A lot of times, I was focusing on finding a good place to take a good photo but I forgot to enjoy the trip. This hike helped me focusing on experiencing the journey and then take the photo!
If I lack self-awareness, that's fine. At least I have a soul and a heart filled with compassion for others. I honestly don't know how you sleep at night.
Today I dreamed
Of friends I had before
And I wonder why
The ones who care don't call anymore
My feelings hurt
But you know I overcome the pain
And I'm stronger now
There can't be a fire unless there's a flame
down to the woods today
Well out of my comfort zone here.
Would you believe at my age, I'd never been to a wood before.
And here I found myself, purely by accident, after getting lost trying to find another location.
What a magical place it was

We have another week or so for this to continue. Then the winds and rain that are normal will knock most of the leaves from the trees.
when you head in the direction of Toledo the colors start to disappear and the trashy urban Gehto look that is so popular in American cities starts to replace the beauty of nature.
The blue hour in the morning on the Grand Canal is a quiet and special time. The throngs of visitors are still sleeping and the gondolas look like they are too.
Before I left on this trip, I got a new little camera and had to replace my ancient computer, so I am learning what new things each of them can do. Good for the mind and to see the possibilities. I like vignettes so used that tool in editing.

are difficult to access unless you are teeny tiny with a long skinny beak. This little one was going all in to get the nectar from almost each and every petunia in the pot. Sometimes you wouldn't see his little head at all. Just his little body sticking out. Those tiny wings work hard keeping them in place while they drink the nectar. These little birds are so amazing to me. I could watch them constantly. I've got several shots of this guy and another one flying close like it's trying to get a good look at who this little invader of petunias is. I'll post one soon
Macro Mondays Theme: TWO. I didn't join this wonderful group until June so I went with one I hadn't done before. I chose the theme from April 4th which is our anniversary. Very apropos the theme was Two! 😊 The wheat was from a bouquet my daughter received when she graduated a couple of weeks ago from WSU Pullman.

🎼🎶 ...:::••• Beautiful birds - Passengers •••:::...
Do you remember when we were two beautiful birds?
We would light up the sky, when we’d fly
You were orange and red like the sun when it sets
I was green as an apple’s eye
You said you loved all the songs that I'd sing
But nothing like you’d ever heard
And I said I loved you with all of my heart
When we were two beautiful birds
Do you remember when we were two beautiful birds?
We would say when the morning would come
You are silver and blue like the moon when it’s new
I was gold as the summer sun
But one day you asked for a different song
One that I just couldn’t sing
I got the melody sharp and the words all wrong
Those were the last days of spring
To build a nest we pecked feathers from our chests
Like a book tearing out every page
We want to know that these feathers would grow
Into a beautiful cage
unless you fail to make the turn :-)

Nothing was left to do that I could see
Unless to find that there was no one there
And declare to the cliffs too far for echo,
"The place is desert, and let whoso lurks
In silence, if in this he is aggrieved,
Break silence now or be forever silent.
Let him say why it should not be declared so."

Angry ghosts keep me company
Eyes are closed but I'm awake
And I can't sleep deeply
Unless I've been drinking
Enough to drown out what they say
And what they say is more than I can take
Oh, what a warped way to learn from my mistakes
There are patterns in the static
Noises in my attic
Voices in my head keep me awake
I'm on the brink of madness
And I can't help but laugh at this
Oh, what a way
Oh, what a way to learn from my mistakes
Nobody gets away with anything
All must bear the balance sheet
So I befriend the voices
They've taught me some songs I guess
But, oh how the truth stings when they speak
And what they say
Is more than I can take
Oh, what a warped way to learn from my mistakes
Not awake but fighting sleep
I just hope
I can dream again
But there's patterns in the static
Noises in my attic
Voices in my head keep me awake
I'm on the brink of madness
And I can't help but laugh at this
Oh, what a way
Oh, what a way to learn from my mistakes

May all the years ahead be as memorable and happy as the past Athos.
Common redpolls are a rare sight here in Iowa, but they really do live up to their name and are a common sight in far northern Minnesota where I'm headed this week. In addition to seeing more common redpolls, I hope to possibly see a hoary redpoll, plus some other neat northern birds, including evening grosbeaks, pine grosbeaks, Canada jays and boreal chickadees. I hope to be back home and touching base with you again on Flickr in about ten days unless a blizzard changes my plans.

Beautiful day through the Lairig Mor.
This was taken in 2014 early on the last day of the West Highland Way. The West Highland Way is a 96 mile walk and on my bucket list to do for many years.
We headed from Kinlochleven, through the Lairig Mor, over to Glen Nevis and down to the foot of Ben Nevis, the UK's highest mountain.
During the walk I was reminded not just of the Proclaimers hit song but also of a George Orwell quote - "The English are not happy unless they are miserable, the Irish are not at peace unless they are at war, and the Scots are not at home unless they are abroad.
