Linux 1.0---A better UNIX than Windows NT

Summary: Linux 1.0 released

Keywords: Linux Kernel 1.0 Academy Awards

X-Moderator-Added-Keywords: universe, end of

Finally, here it is. Almost on time (being just two years late is

peanuts in the OS industry), and better than ever:

Linux kernel release 1.0

This release has no new major features compared to the pl15 kernels, but

contains lots and lots of bugfixes: all the major ones are gone, the

smaller ones are hidden better. Hopefully there are no major new ones.

The Linux kernel can be found as source on most of the Linux ftp-sites

under the names

linux-1.0.tar.gz(full source)

linux-1.0.patch.pl15.gz(patch against linux-0.99pl15)

linux-1.0.patch.alpha.gz(patch from linux-pre-1.0)

it should be available at least at the sites

ftp.funet.fi:

pub/OS/Linux/PEOPLE/Linus(now)

sunsite.unc.ed:

pub/Linux/Incoming(now)

pub/Linux/kernel(soon)

tsx-11.mit.edu:

pub/linux/sources/system(soon)

ftp.cs.helsinki.fi:

pub/Software/Linux/Kernel(now)

This release finally moves Linux out of Beta status and is meant as a

base for distributions to build on. It will neither change Linux'

status as FreeWare under the GPL, nor will it mean the end of

development on Linux. In fact many new features where held back for

later releases so that 1.0 could become a well tested and hopefully

stable release.

The Linux kernel wouldn't be where it is today without the help of lots

of people: the kernel developers, the people who did user-level programs

making linux useful, and the brave and foolhardy people who risked their

harddisks and sanity to test it all out. My thanks to you all.

(Editorial note: if you think this sounds too much like the Academy

Awards ceremony, just skip this: it's not getting any better.)

Thanks to people like Aaron Kushner, Danny ter Haar and the authors of

the AnwenderHandbuch (and others) who have helped me with hardware or

monetary donations (and to the Oxford Beer Trolls and others who took

care of the drinkware). And thanks to Dirk, who helped me write this

announcement despite my lazyness ("hey, it's just another release, who

needs an announcement anyway?").

To make a long and boring story a bit shorter and boring, here is at

least a partial list of people who have been helping make Linux what it

is today. Thanks to you all,

SGI Indigo Coffee machine!

I received an email from a coworker about a retiring professor trying to retrieve data off of old computers. Our central IT was unable to assist due to the age of the machines. The professor was trying to move files from a Mac OS X 10.2, 10.4, and NeXT computer. My heart skipped a beat after that reading that last one. Moving the vintage Mac files would be no problem because I keep those tools handy. I restore vintage Apple //, Macintosh, and other hardware as a hobby.

If you don't know what a NeXT computer is, it's this insanely expensive computer built by Steve Jobs after he was ousted from Apple in the 1980's. It ran Unix, had a gorgeous graphical user interface, and if you use OS X today it is still the foundational basis for the operating system. It was lightyears ahead of anything else out there at the time. Have you ever visited a website before? The first webpage was served on a NeXTcube.

I've never seen a working NeXT computer before though. I saw one in Berlin in a museum and read about them extensively, but I had no idea that our university actually had them.

I immediately went to the professor's office and he showed me what he was trying to do. We talked a little bit about vintage hardware and I told him that I'd never seen a working NeXT before. I was a little hesitant to respond because day-to-day we're flooded with tickets IT support isn't really my thing. Sometimes users, especially tenured professors, need a delicate approach because of their demands. This person could not have been more affable, kind, and good hearted. After talking a while he said he would rather have the hardware saved than go to scrap per university policy.

In the interest of archiving his data and this magnificent hardware I will be cooperating with him to save this NeXT computer. I've also agreed to save the Mac Cube and Power Macintosh G3. Twist my arm. They'll become archive computers if anyone needs a WordPerfect 3.5 file converted. Yes, people still have those.

I decided to document everything in place before moving it all to a secure location. That includes the NeXT computer, original manuals, flyers, software, printers, accessories, and even the original boxes.

The plan is to document EVERYTHING in detail. So stay tuned for future updates.

I hadn't thought about this in a long time, but the unix calendar command for September 1752 is missing a number of days. Most people don't realize this, but there was a shift from the Roman Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. This meant 11 days were literally removed from the calendar in order to make the transition.

Jersey Shore Fightin’ Texas Aggie Ring has noticed over the years that St. Patrick’s Day is bigger up here on the Jersey Shore and in New York than anywhere else he’s lived in the United States. To prepare for tomorrow, Aggie Ring made up a checklist for gathering his necessary supplies:

Irish Whiskey

Corned Beef

Cabbage

Potatoes.

I was planning on getting a smaller bottle of Irish Whiskey, but Aggie Bear yelled out as I was leaving and said that he was planning on doing some drinking with us this year.

The funny thing is, Aggie Ring doesn’t even really like Irish Whiskey all that much. But, since it’s only once a year, he allows himself an indulgence. “Besides,” says Aggie Ring. “The Pope would want us to drink it.”

It’s a bit of a chore for me because to get Aggie Ring to drink the Irish Whiskey, I have to hook him up to one of my computers, open a terminal window, type some Unix commands in Gaelic, and then reboot him. After St. Patrick’s Day, I put him back in “Redneck” mode and he’s back drinking Shiner Bock and bourbon (not together).

I’m going to have to keep an eye on how much Aggie Bear drinks. He’s been telling Aggie Ring that he wants to do a jump to celebrate. The last time he got really drunk was in the 80s and he jumped from the 4th floor of one of the Corps dorms at Texas A&M. Unfortunately for Aggie Bear, his “Bearachute” did not fully deploy and he had a really hard landing.

I try to keep an eye on Aggie Bear. I don’t want him to have to go to the emergency room at the Philly Zoo. I’ve had Aggie Bear for just about as long as I’ve had Aggie Ring. I still remember when an ROTC classmate of mine and I thought it would be a good punishment to make one of the underclassmen in V-1 carry Aggie Bear around campus all day and sit with the bear in all of his classes.

Sadly, our plan went awry when good looking A&M gals would come up to the underclassman all over campus wanting to hold Aggie Bear and then the girls would give the underclassman their phone numbers. I guess I just didn’t think the whole hazing thing through well enough. It failed miserably.

“Move sharply!” called out Aggie Bear to Aggie Ring. “St. Patrick’s starts at midnight and we’ve got some drinking to do!”

I undertook a post graduate in Unix at St. Patrick’s College about fifteen years ago and it was an interesting experience. A few days after completing the course the company that I worked for was purchased by Banta and I was made redundant as the new owners did not require Unix expertise. The post-graduate which was very expensive was sponsored and paid for by the EU and at the time I had believed that I was attending Maynooth University rather than St. Patrick’s because I did not know that they were not the same.

St Patrick's College is the "National Seminary for Ireland" (a Roman Catholic college), and a Pontifical University, located in the village of Maynooth, 24 km from Dublin, Ireland. In 2015-16 there were approximately 80 men studying for the priesthood at Maynooth, 60 resident seminarians and approximately 20 non residents. The college and seminary are often referred to as Maynooth College. The college was officially established as the Royal College of St Patrick by an Act of Grattan's Parliament in 1795. Thomas Pelham, the Secretary of State, introduced his Bill for the foundation of a Catholic college, and this was enacted by Parliament.

Degrees are awarded by the Pontifical University at Maynooth, which was established by a Pontifical Charter of 1896. The Pontifical Charter entitles the university to grant degrees in canon law, philosophy and theology. The college is associated with the separate Maynooth University.
