I undertook a post graduate in Unix at St. Patrick’s College about fifteen years ago and it was an interesting experience. A few days after completing the course the company that I worked for was purchased by Banta and I was made redundant as the new owners did not require Unix expertise. The post-graduate which was very expensive was sponsored and paid for by the EU and at the time I had believed that I was attending Maynooth University rather than St. Patrick’s because I did not know that they were not the same.
St Patrick's College is the "National Seminary for Ireland" (a Roman Catholic college), and a Pontifical University, located in the village of Maynooth, 24 km from Dublin, Ireland. In 2015-16 there were approximately 80 men studying for the priesthood at Maynooth, 60 resident seminarians and approximately 20 non residents. The college and seminary are often referred to as Maynooth College. The college was officially established as the Royal College of St Patrick by an Act of Grattan's Parliament in 1795. Thomas Pelham, the Secretary of State, introduced his Bill for the foundation of a Catholic college, and this was enacted by Parliament.
Degrees are awarded by the Pontifical University at Maynooth, which was established by a Pontifical Charter of 1896. The Pontifical Charter entitles the university to grant degrees in canon law, philosophy and theology. The college is associated with the separate Maynooth University.

The college and seminary are often referred to as Maynooth College. The college was officially established as the Royal College of St Patrick by Maynooth College Act 1795. Thomas Pelham, the Chief Secretary for Ireland, introduced his Bill for the foundation of a Catholic college, and this was enacted by Parliament. It was opened to train 500 Catholic priests every year, and was once the largest seminary in the world.
In the past decades intakes has been decreasing in line with the wider fall in vocations across the Western developed world, with a record low in 2017 of six first year seminarians. This fall was due, in part, to the decision of the Archbishop of Dublin, Diarmuid Martin, to transfer Dublin seminarians to the Irish College in Rome. He did not state his reasons, but there had been unease over accusations of inappropriate behaviour among seminarians in Maynooth. However the 2017 drop may also be explained in part by the Irish Bishops' collective decision, in line with a new Holy See directive, to channel successful applicants for priestly formation into a new so-called propadeutic year before entering seminary. Eight students from the 2017 national intake were thus sent for a year of propadeutic studies in Spain.

The "heart" of a large Unix frame from IBM - FSP (Flexible Service Processor). This is the component (computer, actually) that runs the VMM and communicate with HMCs about the health of the frame. All frames of P5 and P6 class has 2 of them (active/passive configuration). Too bad that it takes an outage to replace a failed FSP. IBM promised that in future machines/frames, this "SPOF" (Single Point Of Failure) will be removed and a hot-swap type configuration for the FSP will be available.
Yeah, right... BTW, this runs a special version of Linux! Yeah, Linux *is* becoming King in the embedded device space!

Sitting in the hammock chair watching the kids play I loved the sun from behind the rope and I thought about rope and hanging and well ... It's not really words of wisdom in the sense of "don't do this" or "don't do that" but it's basically the Unix version of "with great power, come great responsibility"
