Some guy at a tech company had commissioned something a long time ago, but got fired between asking and paying. And then it became incorporated into a lab joke. This morning I looked at my secondary desk and thought, "Who will take care of the UNIX Lizard when I am gone?" and got a little sad. That's my morning.

It dates from 2000 (I think). It's a P3-866 with 512MB RAM (recently upgraded from 256!) and a 20GB disk. But it was too old, slow, and always running out of space.
This old FreeBSD box has been replaced by a newer Linux box with 2GB RAM, more disk space, and a way faster CPU.
Presumably these work reliable and consistently, and do nothing if they put out a fire. If they were unable to put out a fire, I would assume some sort of cryptic error message would be provided (e.g. "fire outputtable quotient exceeded")

Wir haben den Kettler Unix P-Crosstrainer nun seit ca. 3 Wochen - allerdings nicht über Amazon gekauft, sondern im Sportfachhandel.
Möchte auch unbedingt empfehlen, vor dem Kauf mal im Geschäft probe"zulaufen", ob der Crosstrainer einem persönlich von der Größe usw zusagt.
Der Kettler Unix P war z.b. für mich persönlich der einzige, wo ich ein gutes Gefühl hatte beim Probelauf, bei anderen (billigeren) Geräten hatte ich das Gefühl, als seien diese zu groß und vom Trittflächenabstand zu breit. Eine weitere Kaufentscheidung war für meinen Mann und mich auch, daß wir von der Marke Kettler überzeugt sind, wir haben schon einen sehr guten Ergometer zu hause, mit dem wir sehr zufrieden sind (RX1). Außerdem ist er von den Maßen gegenüber anderen Modellen eher kurz und schmal, was bei unserer kleinen Wohnung, wo auch noch drei Kids rumhüpfen, auch von Vorteil ist. Da ich drei- bis viermal die Woche laufe, wollte ich auf jeden Fall ein qualitativ hochwertiges Produkt, und ich denke, das ist bei diesem Crosstrainer der Fall!
Wir haben den Crosstrainer fix fertig aufgebaut geliefert bekommen, somit kann ich zum Aufbau nichts sagen.
Bedienungsanleitung ist umfangreich und gut verständlich.
Es gibt mehrere Programme, wo Zeit und Widerstand bereits voreingestellt sind (natürlich ist der Widerstand jederzeit während des Laufens umstellbar), man kann Alter, Pulsobergrenze usw alles eingeben. Man könnte auch den Trainingsverlauf speichern (haben wir noch nicht ausprobiert). Es gäbe am Gerät auch eine Handpulsmessung, wir fahren allerdings immer mit Brustgurt von Pulsar (der Adapter hierzu ist im Gerät schon eingebaut), mit Ohrclip könnte man auch laufen.
Im Betrieb ist er sehr leise, man hört lediglich, wenn sich der Widerstand ändert.
Die Trittflächen kann man leicht umstellen.

Just recently added Leopard to the mix
Got bored tonight so I decided to try installing FreeBSD 8.2 UNIX on my MacBook via Parallels. So far, I got as far as to install the OS, X11 (xWindows) and installing GNOME from Packages. I know, I know. I do usually install everything using ports but since it takes forever for GNOME to install via ports I figure I'd try this first. You know, if all else fails, I can always reinstall via ports.
I've been experimenting with this stuff these past couple days, building a BSD workstation on an old PC in the office. I was wondering how GNOME on a BSD system would run on a laptop and this is the only laptop I got. So far so good. My experience with FreeBSD has been completely server-end. It's been years since I've build a workstation using BSD and never on a system powerful enough not to lag.
