The Spring 2011 Hackathon brought in hundreds of students from nearly 50 universities in the U.S. and Canada to NYU's Courant Institute for 24 hours of creative hacking on New York City startups' APIs.

Selected startups presented their technologies at the beginning of the event, and students formed groups to brainstorm and begin coding on their ideas. Many students worked into the night, foregoing sleep to fulfill their visions.

On Sunday afternoon students presented their projects to an audience including a judging panel, which selected the final winners.

hackNY hosts hackathons one each semester, as well as a Summer Fellows Program, which pairs quantitative and computational students with startups which can demonstrate a strong mentoring environment, a problem for a student to work on, a person to mentor them, and a place for them to work. Startups selected to host a student are expected to compensate student Fellows. Students enjoy free housing together and a pedagogical lecture series to introduce them to the ins and outs of joining and founding a startup.

Squeezed in between two enormously tall Georgian houses lies this redbrick Victorian church. Actually it was constructed in the gardens beside and behind the house on the right in 1856.

Paul Duensing was handing out these keepsakes during a past "Monotype University". Paul had a small bronze hand-held mould that looked like something a Dutchman would use to make chocolate cookies. It appears the metal suppliers would sample the machine pots at a particular foundry and send these 'cookies' back to be analyzed for metal content.

Back in the day, it was critical to maintain the correct metal content for good machine production and efficiency (time was money); and why not advertise in the mean time.

Paul played with the hand mould to try to get a good image and finally resorted to an old caster trick of adding a thin dusting of talc powder to the mould to assist the flow of metal to get a good image.

About 1 1/2" in diameter; in hind-sight, it would be interesting to analyze the content to see what we were running in the machines. It was all recycled metal but ran quite well. What is the best way to check this out without melting it down?

It turns out the J. C. Winston company had an interesting history in Philadelphia. Established in 1884, it was a successful publisher of all types of books, including bibles. The impressive office building now survives as a restored condominium.

Moscow State University. Designed by Lev Rudnev and completed in 1953.

The building was the tallest building in the world outside of New York City at the time of its construction, and was the tallest building in Europe until 1990. The central tower is 240 metres tall, 36 stories high, and is flanked by four huge wings of student and faculty accommodation. It is said to contain a total of 33 kilometres of corridors and 5,000 rooms. The star on the top of the tower is large enough to include a small room and a viewing platform; it weighs 12 tons.

You can see an exact replica at Una Palace Hotel in Catania, too, and the facade of the building from one of my other photos. Please take a look here

In this building there is the office of the chancellor, and the aula magna.

Moreover, the drawing on the floor is the symbol of Scuola Superiore di Catania (SSC).

The Bombay University building has such beautiful arches, columns and floral desgin windows. The Rajabhai Tower - www.flickr.com/photos/drbalaji/116303440/ - is a part of this landmark of South Bombay.

Yesterday I had a meeting in this gigantic building comprised of endless hallways that all look the same, with no real markers or logic to them. After 10 minutes I was completely disoriented with no idea which direction I was facing or where I should go. Ironically, it is the department of geography at the university of Paris!

Olympic Stadium is the two-pillared building in the center of the photo, with most of the University to the left. The background mountains are the Wasatch Front. Whatever else you'd say about the University of Utah, you'd have to concede it's beautiful.

It's another world to me but good luck to all that take this path. I think this is Christ's College but not sure.

To me this is film at it's best. With my Nikon D7100 you would see every speck and nuisance but with film it's like oil paint you get the essence and this is what makes it worthwhile. It was filmed in colour but the beautiful lawn did not look right with the brown tint of the Fuji so by converting it to black & white made the image.
