On Friday, May 11th, 2018 the #UASCS hosted it's 5th Annual International Night at both the #UASCS Middle and High School. It was a great chance for us to nourish and cherish one of our noble traits, being “glocal”. Indeed, our #UASAtoms brought together more than 20 different cultures in one place at one time. More than 200 visitors came to taste the specialties from dozens of global cuisines while being entertained by traditional (folk) and modern dances. The music, food and great people made this night to be great. Thumbs up to our #UASAtoms, Ms. Grabovica and all those who worked so hard to make this evening special. We will continue our mission to cherish diversity and multiculturalism in our school and look forward to seeing you next year. Go Atoms! #UASAtoms #UASCS

On Saturday, May 26, 2018, Ms. Savage, Mr. Fowler and Mrs. Grabovica took #UASCS high school seniors to New York City for a three day trip. Students had great experiences and enjoyed the best of New York City; Time Square, Statue of Liberty, 9/11 Memorial, Coney Island, and more. These trips reward our students for their hard work and help them learn how to navigate their way in new destinations. Go Atoms! #UASCS #UASAtoms

This Halloween something strange happened at #UASCS middle school. It was reported to us that hallways in our school were spooktacularly haunted. Please check the video evidence...

On Friday, October 19, 2018, first grade #UASAtoms attended their first class field trip to Fort Rickey Children's Discover Zoo, in Rome, NY. The zoo provided an ice cream cone full of animal food and #UASAtoms took bits at a time in their hand to feed the deer and sheep through the fence and then fed them the ice cream cone. After stepping into the enclosure, #UASAtoms were able to pet the deer and hug the sheep. Our #UASAtoms were then taken to the dock and were able to feed the fish and ducks, and they loved it!

We then took a wagon ride that drove us around the zoo, where we were able to see all of the animals in their enclosures. After lunch, we were let into the “maternity pen” where the students were able to pet and hold baby goats and their mothers. Following the maternity pen, we went and played in the ball pit. We aren't sure who had more fun, the students or the chaperones! These visits to local zoo's help expose our #UASAtoms to diverse wildlife and are just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.

On Wednesday, May 23, 2018 #UASCS held it's 1st Annual Career Day. Scholars were given the opportunity to hear presentations from an Elementary Teacher, Lawyer, Nurse, Police Officer, Massage Therapist and Physical Therapist Assistant.

This day helped plant the seed on different career pathways. By identifying what career pathway they are interested in, scholars can start applying what they learn at school to what they want to do in the future. Go Atoms! #UASCS #UASAtoms

On Saturday, November 15, 2014, the UASCS Robotics Team, UAS Atoms, participated to the First Lego League Qualifier at MVCC. The competitors were supposed to have three presentations to the juries in three categories including Robot Design, Project, and Core Values in the morning session. Our team first visited the Robot Design juries to have their presentation about our robot’s abilities and our programming skills. Secondly, we had a project presentation about the “Classroom of the Future” to the project juries. Finally, in the Core Values category, our robotics team had a team activity test and also expressed their feelings and gaining about studying in robotics.

In the afternoon session, the teams were required to perform a set of missions in a fixed amount of time using their robots in three different rounds. In the first round, our robot worked quite well and was able to handle six missions. The UAS Atoms were in first place among 18 teams at the end of the first round. Unfortunately, since we were under stress to keep our first place, we had some panic during the second and third rounds. Therefore we could not do well in those rounds and lost our first place position. At the end of the robot game rounds, the UAS Atoms were in the fifth place in the scoreboard.

As a result, our team was recognized as one of the qualifiers to the next championship event which is going to be held in SUNY Polytechnic Institute on Saturday, December 6, 2014.

On Wednesday, October 10, 2018, our three #UASCS Kindergarten classes went on a trip to North Star Orchards. Upon arrival, we were greeted and split into two large groups. Group one began the trip on the hay ride, while group two started under a pavilion and learned about the seasons and the apple cider making process. While the hay ride took us around the property, the driver stopped several times so that the students could learn about everything that they grow on the farm, (apples, pumpkins, blueberries, Christmas trees, corn, etc.). #UASAtoms also had the opportunity to learn about the property, buildings on the farm and see the cows! Once both groups were able to get through their stations, each class was able to pick a pumpkin to take home. The Orchard was also nice enough to send a box of apples back with us, so that we could have time to see everything before it was time to leave. Thank you, Northstar Orchards!

Forty-Seven of our UASCS Atoms took a three day trip to our nation's capitol, Washington D.C. The students experienced a lot! Highlights of the trip included walking the grounds of Mount Vernon and touring George Washington's home, a photo stop at the White House and a book signing with a survivor from the Holocaust at the US Holocaust Museum. Scholars walked the grounds of Arlington National Cemetery, where they observed the changing of the guards, and heard the honored burial of fallen heroes with a twenty-one gun solute. They completed a scavenger hunt in the Smithsonian Museums of Natural and American Histories. On Friday, October 19, 2018, #UASAtoms traveled back in time to the Civil War era at The Farmer's Museum in Cooperstown, NY. According to the museum's mission, "The Farmers’ Museum is devoted to preserving America’s rural heritage through interactive exhibits, living history programs, and educational workshops that depict farming and rural life."

Our scholars participated in the 19th century life workshop and had a chance to roll up their sleeves and get their hands with history, art, math, and science in a fun way by training as a Blacksmith's Apprentice. This experience directly reflects the historical unit our #UASAtoms are learning about in their classes at the moment. These hands-on lessons are just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.

The 6th graders at UASCS are proud to have participated in the 2015 Canal Clean Sweep along the Erie Canal on Thursday, April 30th! The purpose of this field trip was to teach scholars about the importance of caring for our environment, as well as giving back to the community. Scholars, teachers, and parents spent the morning cleaning up trash and debris along a 4-mile portion of the Erie Canal trail. Together, we filled 9 industrial sized garbage bags with garbage and debris found along the trail.

Scholar’s Experiences:

Gabriela, The Erie Canal Clean Up was a fun way to take care of our environment. It was a good thing that we were cleaning up all the garbage to make sure it stays neat. We got to see the canal and boats while we were walking the 4 miles. There were a couple snakes that we saw that didn’t harm us. It was a nice thing that we also enjoyed the outdoors. Even though we had to walk 4 miles it was all worth it. It was a great idea to help the environment and economy. The view of the canal was beautiful when clean. We can all make a difference if we help and all chip in!

Ossareine, I had a good time being outside with my friends and cleaning up The Erie Canal. I felt good helping the environment, it felt refreshing to be outside and walking. I thought it was a good idea to help the canal by cleaning the canal. The Erie Canal is also a good place to ride a bike or walk, by keeping the canal clean you can walk, bike, or walk your dog. The view of the lake and the forest was cool.

McKenna, The Erie Canal clean up was so much fun. I’m happy we got to help clean up the environment. It was a good 4-mile walk, but it was worth it to make sure we could make a difference.

Aiden, The Erie Canal Clean Up was a very fun thing to do. It was a great way to help the environment and I enjoyed it. While the walk was pretty long, it was also felt good to be in nature and help clean up. The fresh air was great and we saw boats and other cool things. The bridge that lifted up and down was also really cool. We even saw snakes and spiders (that didn’t harm anyone) which were awesome. We made a difference and I would love to go back again.
