Final TP of a Book - Longinotti - Typography 1 - UBA

Cooper (age 2), after going through most of the art/design books in the room has taking a liking to the Typography book. Nobody is going to believe that we didn't set this one up.

Found Typography from the Wichita, KS area.

Papermag ran an item asking designers what their favorite letter A is.

I'd be hard pressed to chose a favorite, but I can tell you about some A's I've hated.

1. Cadeaulx

2. Fette Fraktur

3. Wilhelm Klingspor Gotisch

All suffer from the same ailment. They don't look like A's when taken alone. Sure if I need a whole word, like "Adorable" or "Aggressor" or some such, they work just fine. But each of these has completely withered my dreams of a nice lush "LA" monogram dead on it's vine.

Thanks to Coudal Partners for the link, and to Cameron Moll for introducing me to the otherwise perfectly wonderful Wilhelm Klingspor Gotisch.

Regrettable typography on the Uncle Sam monument. My guess is that the lettering was engraved using stencils that weren't marked "this side face up"; the A and all three M's here are flipped horizontally.

Movie typography project from second year in CAWD.

Another part of the Helvetica installation - the type on the walls are ceramic and it reads: UNCOOPERATIVE AND COMPLETE - which is another aspect of Helvetica that drives me nuts.

This is a type installation on a 18 x 10' wall - a list of all of my addictions. The more delicate the information, the smaller the type.

First set of layouts on a typography based Uni brief with the intention of creating an information document highlighting the basic print and type terms.

I knew the typeface needed to be a clean sans-serif, but only until you see them side-by-side can you really tell the subtle (and not so subtle) differences between them. Gotham Light was chosen because of its retro feel and slightly elongated letterforms.

Did this during my free time. I only used words to create this picture. Lost count of how many words were used. But the eyes, mouth, and nose consists the most. If I had to say I would say it's well over 3,000 words.

I don't know what happened in September

and i have a vague memory about that.

STENCIL POSTER TYPOGRAPHY

3rd round of exploration geared towards developing in-camera techniques for animating motion graphics to arrive at a less mechanical, more organic and optical feel, but with a process that provides flexibility for content control. No compositing is used here, no photoshop manipulation. My constraints are exposures no longer than 30 seconds, all typography and imagery is composed and exposed during that duration.

The next round will deal with registration issues, color and further exploration of foreground / middleground / background shifting of elements.

What techniques did you use for this lettering project that were different from the typography project?

I used the font that they used for the lilo and stitch movie cover i also added a little bit of the Hawaiian colors too.

• Why do letterers / artists embrace imperfection?

the imperfections make the work better and more unique

then other peoples.

• How did you embrace imperfection?

i embrace it very well because imperfection is better and its far more unique then anything else out there. And perfection is very very very boring and lame.

I've never been able to draw very well, but I do enjoy doing this kind of stuff with lyrics from my favorite songs and such :)
