Make Something Cool Every Day is a personal, (ideally-) daily design exercise wherein I churn out type-centric black and white drabbles using song titles, the Univers type family (Kozuka Gothic for Japanese type) and some wonderful images from Wikimedia Commons.
Again this uses very simple principles: simple typography, grids, lining things up, etc. Although presented here in horizontal format the design is actually a front and back of a square leaflet. I like the idea of continuity between front and back or outside and inside so that if you do, as in this case, put things side by side they still relate. To me that sense of cohesion is a personal design principle. I also like the sense of cohesion that can build up over years when you establish a long working relationship. Although there have been breaks I like to think Project Icebreaker is ongoing. The band have always made me feel like an unofficial member. They have always seen the visual as intrinsic to their sound. Ironically it's rare that a client sees image as such an integral aspect of their identity, I think it might be that we graduated around the same time and have grown up together as it were.
I created this playful typography to use for advertising my own dog walking business. I experimented with creating a paw print incorporating text. By using a range of brown tones I was able to depict dry mud on the lettering and added two animalistic characters from the remaining letters.
