I've had a couple of people ask about the CD-based wargaming terrain I've built, so here's Part One of a tutorial for them.
Nothing earthshaking or terribly original, but if a tut like this gets someone building scenery they didn't think they could, that's cool - good scenery's not hard, and there's too many ugly wargaming tables out there!

Raji has taken a series of photos, generously contributing them for me to post on my blog to narrate the Varalakshmi Puja which happens on the third Friday of Aadi Month in Tamil/Telugu calendars in South India. This is a prayer celebration attended mainly for women, to pray to the goddess for health, wealth and general good fortune.

This is what a Kalash looks like before dressing it. Here we see the pot with the turmeric covered coconut on top.
Raji says, "Mine is silver and one piece and reaches from the crown to the bust. The crown alone is dipped in gold. The eyes are already formed and painted on. Other jewelery is also added on - you can get the face without the jewellery too.
The kalasam is made up of a turmeric smeared coconut, placed on a siver/brass pot filled with rice, gold or silver coins, turmeric pieces. The face is pinned on to the coconut, and then decorated with flowers jewelery etc. The whole is placed in a plate, and then in a mandapam ( on a plantain leaf covered with rice.)"
Some wonder what to do with the coconut in the kalash after Varalakshmi Vratham. It's best to keep the coconut and use it for cooking withing your own house.
Notes= Devi and Amman are other words meaning Goddess.
Alayam, Nivas, Manadapam- other names for house of god/ meeting place.

Baba Swarnjit Singh conducted a successful leadership camp for children of Doaba region. Lectures in history were augmented by spreading awareness of our flora, fauna, ecology and sanitation. It was stressed that if we excel at studies and sports, keep our surroundings clean and conserve our resources we can individually make this world a better place.

I’ve made this tutorial to show you how to add lighting effects.
My main tip is to always build at a larger scale – I generally use 200 for guns but often use 400 for custom parts, particularly Valkyrie parts. This makes everything look at lot smoother and looks much better when you take the Jpeg of your build.
Lighting Tutorial
Fig.1: This is simple and addresses the problem with lining up shapes.
Always use your arrow keys, not the mouse – this moves them by even pixels either one, or ten at a time by holding the shift key.
Duplicate solid long rectangles at scale 100 and move until they are separated then move back ten pixels. Rinse and repeat. If you do this at a higher scale (like 100) it is smoother once you group and scale them down to the size you need. You can lay 7 long rectangles at scale 100 across the screen for grouping.
Fig.2: Now we have a line made up of 3 x 7 100 scale rectangle at scale 10. The rail is coloured 333333 so to add a 3D highlight we make the 10 scale line 3e3e3e, making it look as if the rail has a slope to it. Now we simply layer a white long rectangle over the top to make it smooth (i.e. eliminate the rail.
Fig.3: Scale down long rectangles until they fit within the boundaries of the area you want to highlight. These are coloured 383838 which is lighter than 333333 but darker than 3e3e3e.
Now take two shaded triangles and place them one at either side and use arrows to align them within the boundaries of the area. I’ve used two different ones here as the light at the front of the gun is lighter than that at the back, both are coloured 333333.
Once those are in the area, repeat the solid long rectangle trick with a half-shaded long rectangle and flip it so that the darker area is to the top. Place this between the triangles and layer them on top.
Now take another long rectangle and layer it beneath this line and the triangles – the initial area is coloured 383838 and this will be coloured 282828 giving it a 3D feel.
Group it all together and there you have it.
