Male painted turtles (Chrysemys picta) have extremely long front claws as shown here, which are used during courtship. Females have short claws but are larger in overall size. Courting takes place in the water: the male moves backwards facing the female while waving the long claws in a trembling motion along the sides of her head and neck. Mating takes place if the female is receptive to the male's display. The painted turtle is a common species in many areas of the US.

I'm not sure how this map turtle ended up with a feather in its mouth but you have to wonder what it had for dinner.
Have a good weekend.

A cute turtle in the lawn on a rainy day. He just kept moving from here to there and everywhere in between without too much concern at all.
Turtles are so vunerable, yet so non-frantic - love it!
While snapping turtles will avoid turtle soup like the plague, this snapper is not above begging for change to keep up with her supply of roll up the rim coffee! She may drive off in that van yet!
Today I was formally introduced to Timmy, who lives in a workroom adjacent to the school nurse's office. Timmy was rescued from a local swimming pool, and is well-loved by our elementary students.
Painted turtles on a log. Early this spring I was hiking in Kiwanis Park, Kitchener, Ontario. I had to sneak up very quietly on this group of turtles. As I was sitting in the grass I noticed a huge snapping turtle peaking out of the water right in front of me. It was great. The turtles were enjoying the sun on a windy day!
A teeny, tiny guy I snatched out of the road near Eley's Ford, Spotsylvania County, VA. Seriously, how tiny and cute is he? Three inches long and so tiny and perfect!
Shukkeien is a small stroll garden, worth an hour of your time in Hiroshima. Here is one of its turtles. Interestingly, Shukkeien means "shrunken scenery garden", so called because the park displays famous Chinese scenery in miniaturized form with a pond, small islands, bridges and various plants.
Taken at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens Koi Pond. It was a lot of fun to watch these guys battle the fish for the food visitors were tossing into the water.
