Just like you’ve seen in media from the 2000’s and earlier, the quintessential American suburbia summer experience includes a local swim (and tennis) club. During my childhood, I enjoyed summers riding my bike up to the pool with friends, and going to tennis team practices and matches in the afternoons (it was called the Kendallwood Swim Club). A handful of friends even became lifeguards, the pinnacle of summer jobs for a teenager. The average age for the city I grew up has been increasing, so there are fewer kids to go to the pools. As a result the pool where I spent my summers went vacant and slowly became dilapidated. They finally decided to demolish it, so I went over this last weekend to take a look. Here are some shots from that. In the days since, they have torn it up further.

Pudong (Chinese: 浦东) is a district of Shanghai, China, located along the east side of the Huangpu River, across from the historic city center of Shanghai in Puxi. It is administered as the Pudong New Area, a state-level new area.

More information about Shanghai.

Pudong is home to the Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone and the Shanghai Stock Exchange and many of Shanghai's best known buildings, such as the Oriental Pearl Tower, the Jin Mao Building, the Shanghai World Financial Center. It is also the site of the future Shanghai Tower. These modern skyscrapers face directly across from Puxi's historic Bund, a remnant of a former concession in China.

Pudong refers to the land in the east of Huangpu River. Originally, the area was mainly farmland and countryside with some warehouses and wharfs near the shore. The parts closest to Puxi were administered by its districts, including Huangpu, Yangpu, and the former Nanshi District. The rest of the area was administered by Chuansha County.

In 1993, the Chinese government decided to set up a Special Economic Zone in Chuansha, creating the Pudong New Area. The western tip of the Pudong district was designated as the Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone and was proposed to become the new financial hub of modern China. Several landmark buildings were constructed in Lujiazui to raise the image and awareness of the area. These include the Oriental Pearl Tower, the Jin Mao Building, and the supertall Shanghai World Financial Center. At 494 m, the last will be the tallest building in China of the nearby Shanghai Tower, which is projected to reach 565.6 m in 2014.

On May 6, 2009, it was disclosed that the State Council had approved the proposal to merge Nanhui District with Pudong and comprise the majority of eastern Shanghai.

For more information about Macau city in China, please visit my website: www.abookaboutchina.com/travelguide/Macau

St. Pauls Cathedral in Macau was built between 1582 to 1602 by the Jesuits. The cathedral was the largest Catholic church in Asia at the time, and the royalty of Europe vied with each other to bestow upon the cathedral the best gifts. With the decline in importance of Macau, which was overtaken as the main port for the Pearl River Delta by Hong Kong, the cathedral's fortunes similarly ebbed. It was destroyed by a fire during a typhoon in 1835. The Fortaleza do Monte overlooks the ruin.

The Ruins of St. Paul's (大三巴牌坊) refer to the façade of what was originally the Cathedral of St. Paul, a 17th century Portuguese cathedral in Macau dedicated to Saint Paul the Apostle. Today, the ruins are one of Macau's most famous landmarks. In 2005, the Ruins of St. Paul were officially enlisted as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Historic Centre of Macau.

More information about the Marble Boat and the Summer Palace in Beijing can be found at my website: www.abookaboutchina.com/location/Summer-Palace

The Marble Boat ( 石舫), also known as the Boat of Purity and Ease (Qing Yan Fǎng) is a lakeside pavilion on the grounds of the Summer Palace in Beijing, China. It was first erected in 1755 during the reign of the Qianlong Emperor. The original pavilion was made from a base of large stone blocks which supported a wooden superstructure done in a traditional Chinese design.

In 1860, during the Second Opium War, the pavilion was destroyed by Anglo-French forces. It was restored in 1893 on order of the Empress Dowager Cixi. In this restoration, a new two-story superstructure was designed which incorporated elements of European architecture. Like its predecessor, the new superstructure is made out of wood but it was painted to imitate marble. On each "deck", there is a large mirror to reflect the waters of the lake and give an impression of total immersion in the aquatic environment. Imitation paddlewheels on each side of the pavilion makes it look like a paddle steamer. The pavilion has a sophisticated drainage system which channels rain water through four hollow pillars. The water is finally released into the lake through the mouths of four dragon heads.

The boat design of the pavilion may relate to a quote attributed to Wei Zheng, a chancellor of the Tang Dynasty renown for his honest advice. He is said to have told the emperor "the waters that float the boat can also swallow it", implying that the people can support the emperor but can also topple him. With this in mind, Emperor Qianlong might have chosen to construct the Marble Boat on a solid stone base to indicate that the Qing Dynasty was not to be overthrown.

The Marble Boat is often seen as an ironic commentary on the fact that the money used to restore the Summer Palace largely came from funds originally earmarked for building up a new imperial navy. The controller of the Admiralty, the 1st Prince Chun, owed much of his social standing as well as his appointment to the Empress Dowager, who had adopted his oldest son to become the Guangxu Emperor. Because of this, he probably saw no other choice than to condone the embezzlement.

The pavilion is 36 meters long. It stands on the northwestern shore of Kunming Lake, near the western end of the Long Corridor.

"Where to go by bus" - a charming guide to the town and the extensive country area services. The latter continued up into WMPTE days and I have fond memories of a mis-spent youth rattling around places on the way to Bridgenorth and sitting on buses doing reverse turns in what appeared to be farmyards!

Capellania San Esteban

6ª. Calle Oriente entre 12 y 14 Avenida Sur

Barrio San Esteban, San Salvador.

This is a scan of a page from Your Guide to the National Parks from Stone Road Press. They contacted me about using one of my photos from our amazing Alaska trip as the lead-in photo to their section on Denali, and were kind enough to send me a copy of the book.

I haven't had time to do any more than skim the book, but it does look quite nice.

I truly hope to spend some significant time this summer processing and posting photos, old and new. Hopefully I'll become some semblance of a useful Flickr citizen again, for at least a while.
