Translucent Dreams
"A world of translucent dreams,
where shadows weave their tales under a trembling moonlight,
in the silence of the night within hidden forests."
"Love me in a world of translucent dreams" - Dan Enache
The first few blossom flowers were out on a Winter Flowering Cherry Tree on Hartham Common in Hertford today :-) Backlit and covered with water droplets they looked lovely!
Taken at the windmills near the Chybucca junction on the A30. They have come out a little fainter than I would like but they were moving pretty fast - I drive past them every day though and the wind is rarely blowing in the right direction to get a shot - so I had to take the opportunity.

This sawfly larvae, along with a whole bunch of its brothers and sisters, were hanging out on the leaves of some flowers - and absolutely shredding them. Most of the leaves were just reduced to the veins and not much else.
I believe the species to be Nematus melanocephalus and if you look really closely at the photo, you'll see that it is actually translucent and the white band is actually inside it! It looked like someone poured a lot of grains of rice in there or something. Very cool.
This is a short focus stack made in Zerene Stacker from two separate shots to get a little extra depth of field.
I've been thinking about the weird S-shape these guys like to take up. I find various mention of it being a defensive position, but I can't for the life of me figure out what would be scary about it for a bird or other predator. Perhaps it's a way to imitate the empty veins of the leaf after the larvae have eaten them clean?
The edge of an art-glass bowl up against an opaque glass lamp. That "Dutch Angle" from a few weeks ago is seems to be coming in handy!
Not many orange poppies in the garden this year but did find a few...thought I would change up the look this time.

I cropped the heck out of this shot to highlight the fascinating wing translucency.

Another incomprehensible iceberg in Lake Argentina in Los Glaciares National Park.
I've never seen such clear glacial ice -- especially illuminated with back light like this. On top of that I love the texture of this ice chipped like an ancient stone tool.
Here's a broader view of this iceberg.
