The raw materials for rail making arriving and the finished product leaving Workington Yard in July 1987. 37504 & 37505 have arrived from Lackenby with “the blooms”, steel slabs that will be rolled into rails like those behind 47591 which is about to back down past Workington Main No.2 ‘box where it will be released onto the main line.

To the left of the trains the loading gauge survives and beyond the railway, land is cleared for the construction of Derwent Howe Retail Park. Immediately to the left of the trains was the Langton Park Sidings which once fed the steelworks' ore stocks and after that it was a massive scrapyard containing all kinds of works railway locos and rolling stock. In the middle distance, grass grows where - a decade before - the houses, shops and school of The Marsh (a thriving Workington community) had stood. On the right of the picture the sidings on the up side are full of wagons.

On the horizon, proper docks cranes at the Port of Workington.

Transition. I have been thinking of the best way to end the year to express my sincere appreciation of your continued support of the images I capture and share. Rather than a ‘best of’ series, I opted for a new image captured earlier today. Just as we transition from 2023 to 2024, the photo transitions from the reds of the resting wild blueberry plants, to the the browns of the mowed fields just beyond, the green spruce and leafless maples, finally to the snow-covered trees in the not-so-distant higher elevations. Happy New Year and all the best for 2024!

Scanned Negative with Digital Nikon P5100

Process description: pre rinse 5 minutes with agitation to remove anti halation dye to reduce ancillary reaction with the dye and dev then Dev: HC110 1:63 Dil H total time 11 MInutes w Agitation 1st 30sec, then 4 inversion every minute to finish, fix the same process as dev, then water bath for 5 minutes, and lastly a distilled water rinse before drying (prevents water spots)..works well with Ilford Delta 100 and Fuji Neopan 100.

Tone: added digitally, otherwise only light sharpening and minor contrast bump was all that was done to this image...I really want to Lith print this some day, but would like to try Split grade printing first specifically with this Negative just to see how the Subtle textures in the foreground sand ripples turn out.

Print Plan: Below the horizon line will be dodged to lighten the foreground and enhance shadow detail, while Increasing contrast via split grade printing. Above the horizon will be burned omitting the darker upper left portion of the sky to balance out the image Tone wise...I may additionally burn in the mountains and Island near the horizon to enhance their presence. Then of course retouching dust spots and Lint lines for Print display...in all it will be a lighter more depth creating image in the print..

Parked between what used to be Marrakesh Restaurant and Fort Fringe, these three backhoes are no doubt getting ready to participate in the upcoming transition of the 600 block of New York Ave. NW in Washington, DC

This photo featured in the PoPville blog.

It never occurred to me that conifers changed colors much the same way deciduous trees do. There are no bright colors but the transition and eventual drop are similar. This cedar foliage is in the process of dying.

The break-up of the St. Lawrence River is underway! Note the green water at the shore. This represents water over the ice. Because this island is so close to the power dam at Cornwall, water levels fluctuate cosiderably. Evidentally, the dam has restricted its flow of water thereby raising the river at this point. This causes water to rise up over the shore ice. This will hasten the break-up of the ice. Spring and open water will be upon us soon!

[Something about Taipei]

The southern village of the 44th arsenal was founded by the KMT government in 1948 as the very first military dependents' village in Taiwan. The nowadays abandoned village locates at the most prosperous area of Taipei. Through a broken window, I stared at the once tallest skyscraper in the world, Taipei 101, and took probably the most conflicting image I've ever taken. In the heart of Taipei, this village witnesses the past, present, and future of Taiwan. Even if 60 years goes by, she still stands. Even if being surrounded by skyscrapers, she still stands. She stands to remind us of who we are and what we've been through. Most importantly, she stands to make sure that this island is becoming a better and better place.
