We decided to catch a train to Trakai, which boasts a restored medieval castle built on an island in a lake. It is now a museum but the architecture is quite something.

Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia is the largest inland salt flat. Rich salt deposits have been extracted for years, but this activity dwindled,. As a consequence, the many trains that were used for salt transport have been abandoned.

The sight of dozens of derelict trains can be seen at Uyuni, at the entrance of the Salar. They lay there, wrapped in the dust stirred by winds that sweep the surrounding wastelands, reminescent of large skeletons bearing the witness to decay.

I've changed the content of the museum wall, putting my own drawing into the frame: visit PhotoFunia to do the same:

My fifth holiday train for the family Christmas tree! Santa needs to haul more stuff, and he knows rail, not air travel, is the way of the future. So it's time to pack the sleigh, harness up those reindeer, and make tracks ...

For more photos and a video, view the album. And if you're curious, here are trains IV, III, II, and I all the way back to my first MOCs in 2013. It's been quite a ride : )

Best wishes to you and yours -- Happy Holidays everyone!

"Life is a train of moods like a string of beads; and as we pass through them they prove to be many colored lenses, which paint the world their own hue, and each shows us only what lies in its own focus."

(Ralph Waldo Emerson - American Poet and Essayist, 1803-1882)

This is the train which goes from Delhi to Varanasi (Benaras), I took this picture when it stopped at Moradabad for ten minutes.

This young man is a chai wallah selling tea from one coach to another.

The train was full and we had to handle the usual heat of the last days of May, so each stop became a moment of happiness where I could find cold drinks and fresh fruits and take a few pictures in order to free my mind.

I always enjoy using Indian Railways, it allows to meet amazing people, to find the time to share a few words with them and to learn many things.

I try to travel by train as much as I can, it is not only a way to reach a place but also to travel in time...I treasure so many memories of funny stories and touching moments spent in those trains even if I am also fighting a lot with some unbelievable noisy and rude people at night...;))

No 76079 was built at the Horwich works of the former Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway in February 1957 and entered service with the London Midland region at Sutton Oak shed. After more than 10 years at Sutton Oak, No 76079 was transferred to Wigan in June 1967 where the duties were mainly concerned with mineral and general goods traffic, but it only lasted on this work for six months, being withdrawn at the end of the year. In company with three other Standard Moguls from Wigan, it was towed to Barry Scrapyard behind the inevitable diesel locomotive, arriving there in September 1968.

In preservation, 76079 has proved a popular and versatile locomotive, passed for main-line running and acquiring the nickname "Pocket Rocket" for being small but powerful.
