Yesterday, 6/30/21, we deployed acoustic recorders and oyster trays at Goose Island. The oyster trays will serve as artificial habitat units, allowing us to sample local oyster reef communities. The acoustic recorders capture estuarine soundscapes, including vocalizing fishes like the gulf toadfish. The study aims to track the development of oyster reef soundscapes and communities on newly restored oyster reefs.

Definitely one of the highlights of the trip. This little critter apparently is only found on the Palancar Reef in Cozumel - and nowhere else in the world! Such a cool thing to see something so unique.

Also known as the Coral Toadfish, its latin name is Sanopus splendidus.

What was that about "only a mother could love a face like that?"

We saw at least 4 of these guys at the Spanish rock site, and this was the largest, almost 1 ft.
