Toad Hall
A few weeks ago I first noticed the behavior of a male toadifsh (Omegophora armilla) collecting objects and filling a discarded bucket with them. On this dive I found another toadfish behaving in a similar way but this time filling a large sponge.
I wonder if they have completed their collections yet?
What happens when they start to overflow?
Have either suitors attracted a mate yet?
This weekend I plan to go back and visit Toad Hall and see how both are fairing.

Landing safely at Hartford's Brainard Airport, with the city to the upper left corner of the picture.
Great dives today with our friends and an excellent guide. We started the day on Cedral Wall, but starting at a different point than normal. This was one of the best dives I've been on.
We saw many turtles, some barracuda, a few sting rays, a very large eagle ray in the distance, a few splendid toadfish, multitudes of reef fish, and a few VERY friendly nurse sharks who kept circling around and coming in to see if we might have a treat for them.
The next dive was at Yukab, and again we saw sharks, turtles, sting rays, and more. I took the camera on this dive and got a shot of a nurse shark as he cruised by.

Premières plongées muck sur les spots de Bima, sur l'île de Sumbawa. Poisson-ballon à épaule noire, Stars and stripes toadfish, Arothron hispidus. Même le rémora se repose !
Yesterday, 6/30/21, we deployed acoustic recorders and oyster trays at Goose Island. The oyster trays will serve as artificial habitat units, allowing us to sample local oyster reef communities. The acoustic recorders capture estuarine soundscapes, including vocalizing fishes like the gulf toadfish. The study aims to track the development of oyster reef soundscapes and communities on newly restored oyster reefs.
Definitely one of the highlights of the trip. This little critter apparently is only found on the Palancar Reef in Cozumel - and nowhere else in the world! Such a cool thing to see something so unique.
Also known as the Coral Toadfish, its latin name is Sanopus splendidus.
What was that about "only a mother could love a face like that?"
