tdc marks on a suzuki dt2 outboard - circa 1983. The first aligned to the notch in the casing is tdc - the others I presume are 1 and 2 deg before. Strangely - the notch is facing away from the piston at 180 deg - which is not really exactly sensible to my mind - but it is japanese !

The bit of paper in the points serves to check when they open if you pull on it.

edit - checking the exact tdc with a dial gauge - these marks represent 5 - 10 and 15 deg before tdc - aligned to the notch top left, That figures - actual tdc is an imaginary line to the left of the three !

Just as I was taking this picture of Trollius ledebourii, a syrphid fly landed on the petals!

I had the pulleys mounted too high and the timing belt too tight the first time around. There should be sufficient room for play in the belt. If you push your finger a couple of millimeters gently against the belt, it should give way easily too.

If that truck hadn't pulled into the lot at that exact moment...

Sometimes you get lucky with the timing!

Much like comedy, a meteor impact is ALL about timing. This self-proclaimed "best-preserved impact crater in the world" boasts an impressive size. I was astonished by how big it actually is. This change was certainly abrupt. With the meteor flying through the sky and striking earth in a matter of seconds and at astounding speeds. Ultimately, less than 1% of the meteor that entered the atmosphere struct the planet. Despite losing 99% of its mass, the impact was still THIS big. What is most surprising, is the corresponding long term influence time has had on this area. Despite the catastrophic event, life exists and flourishes. Many desert creatures run around, they are visible with the handy telescopes provided by the park. And there is a litany of desert flora present. I guess I expected to see a smoking ruin, not a peaceful cradle of life. Time has a funny way of healing these sorts of wounds. The Arizona that experienced this collision was MUCH different than what we expect today. It was the ice age when this meteor struck.

On the left is my friend Tim Dube (pronounced doo-bee). He's the guy that I traded my Deuce Coupe to for my Deuce Sedan back in '01 that I eventually set records with at Maxton. He still has the coupe.

In which my nephews demonstarte that if you jump off the ground in time to the clickings of an electric fence you can hang on and not get stung.

and just so you know, he was going quite fast.

One of America’s treasures, the beautifully restored 1930 Harvey House in Winslow, AZ was designed by Mary Jane Colter, the most influential female architect of her time. La Posada was the last of the great Harvey House/Santa Fe Railway hotels.

Mary Colter, who also designed the Hopi House at the Grand Canyon, considered La Posada to be her favorite project, being the only time she was allowed to design everything from the gardens to the buildings.

The timing of the opening couldn't have been worse. 1930 saw the beginning of the Great Depression, and La Posada never truly prospered. It closed 27 years later, the museum-quality treasures auctioned off. In 1961, it was gutted to be transformed into offices for the Santa Fe Railway (yes, acoustic ceiling tiles and all.) By 1994 the National Trust for Historic Preservation but La Posada on its endangered list.

After three years of negotiation, Allan Affeldt and his wife Tina Mion, purchased the landmark and immediately began restoration, hiring local artisans to restore it to its glory. Oh, and what glory it is!

The Vegas Tourist attended the 52nd Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, held December 2 to 11, 2010 at the Thomas and Mack in Las Vegas.

The Wrangler National Finals Rodeo is the championship event for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s rodeo year.

The 2010 Wrangler NFR Tie-Down Ropers were 13-Tuf Cooper, 14-Ryan Jarrett, 27-Stran Smith, 29-Jerome Schneeberger, 30-Shane Hanchey, 32-Trent Creager, 36-Tyson Durfey, 38-Cody Ohl, 40-Clint Cooper, 55-Fred Whitfield, 62-Scott Kormos, 64-Joseph Parsons, 73-Clif Cooper, 74-Jerrad Hofstetter, and 1-Trevor Brazile.

Tie-down roping is a true partnership event between the cowboy and his horse. Tie-downing roping was formally known as calf roping.

Tie-down Ropers start from the roping box, they are required to give the calf a predetermined head start, and there is a ten second penalty of the cowboy breaks the barrier. As soon as the cowboy ropes the calf, the horse stops, the cowboy dismounts and sprints towards the calf. The cowboy then flanks the calf, ties any three legs together with a piggin string (a short, looped rope the cowboy holds in his teeth during the run), the horse is keeps slack out of the rope by backing up but, needs to avoid dragging the calf. Once the cowboy when he is done with the tie, throws his hands in the air to stop the clock, the cowboy then walks back to his horse, remounts, and rides forward to put slack in the rope. The cowboy then waits six seconds to see if the calf remains tied, to make the time official. If the calf does not remain tied, the cowboy receives a no time.

Tie-down roping requires timing, speed, agility, strength, and a highly trained horse. This event began with informal contests between cowboys on ranches of the Old West. Calves that were sick or injured needed to be roped and quickly immobilized for treatment, cowboys often worked alone and he had to depend on his horse.

The Vegas Tourist would like to the Thomas and Mack, the PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association), the Cowboys and Cowgirls, the stock contractors, and the fans for their support of rodeo.

Come join The Vegas Tourist for ten days of rides, the wrecks, and the unforgettable moments of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Let’s Ride!!
