Hedychium is a constant surprise in its timing behavior - last year around this time Hedychium coccineum was in flower - this year that one hasn't even shown any buds up to now, but we now have Hedychium deceptum flowering, a month earlier than last year. This looks even more tropical, while the kivi leaves already turn yellow.

Horrible isnt it? The gearbox cover was already off. Several screws on the timing cover were stuck and had rounded off heads. Nice. An impact driver released them quite easily though.

...is everything. Oh, and a little luck doesn't hurt.

Whilst the engine is out I thought I'd take a look inside the timing covers as you hear all sorts of horror stories of failed tensioners and broken chain ramps.

For once all looks OK!

The type of tensioner is a 1980-1983 Turbo part so I guess the engine has been rebuilt at some point.

A shot of the fireworks going off in DC during the 4th of July. I enjoy getting the shots of the fireworks going off in front of people. My girlfriend was kind enough to stand in front of me to get this shot.

This was in a public washroom in Shanghai. As soon as you turned the lock the clock outside the stall started ticking, showing everyone how long you were taking. The Chinese characters before the time are 'you ren' which means 'has person'. The unoccupied stall has the characters 'wu ren' over it, which means 'no person'.

The first weekend of July we found ourselves back in Shanghai.

The timing of my last blog entry entitled "Bathroom Humor" and dealing

with poop (the non-bodily type) made me laugh since my college put out

a young alumni newsletter with a feature article about me as well as a

link to my blog. I immediately got a handful of emails from friends

whom I hadn't spoken to in a while who were entertained that I spend

my time musing over bathroom-talk. LIVING THE DREAM!

So in order to raise the sophistication of my blog, this entry

pertains to gardening. Namely my new potted garden that's located on

my front steps. I'm a vegetable gardener growing tomatoes, peppers

(red and hot), and basil. I have six plants in all and they're green,

lush, and beautiful! They say that only smart people garden, so I

certainly agree with that statement.

...even if it means that I just made up that saying now.

One keeper from a fruitless day shooting shooting trap. Unfortunately the only open range was looking directly into the sun.

Right place, right time... good capture.

Was driving around with my girlfriend when she pointed out the sunset off in the distance. I wasn't able to see it at first but when I did my jaw dropped. We were right by a golf course so I pulled my car over, got out, hopped a fence and was able to take this shot.

At the time, I was frustrated that I couldn't get these power lines out of the way, but now I'm glad that the tower is in there. It gives the sky some sort of depth or contrast, I'm not sure which.

Literally less than two minutes after I snapped this pic, the lighting changed and the clouds turned from this bright orange to their normal darkish gray. So glad I was able to capture this at just the right time. Gotta love sunsets!

ODC2 - Our Daily Challenge - Timing is everything

I went along to the farm to see if anything was happening there and looking for photo opportunities. The cattle feed must have been put out just before I got there and the cows and calves were all busy with their heads in the various bins. All of a sudden, out of the midst of the cattle, this ostrich spread it's wings and chased the cattle away! I guess they got too close or too pushy. A couple of the emus were also rearing up at each other, but I missed getting an in-focus shot of them!

So this was a lucky shot! When I looked at it on the computer I couldn't decide between "I believe I can fly" or "Shall we dance" . I loved the expression on the calf, as though it was wondering what the ostrich was up to now!

My particular... brand of photography relies heavily on timing: right time, right place, right subject, right circumstance. Those converge and generally I'm going to get a photo I like.

And with Daniel, I don't think that could've been more perfect.

When I first encountered him, he was just lounging against a tree. A couple fishing poles at the lake shore. I fully intended to just walk by. Until, I swear, he sprang up to his feet from laying down and ran to the pole. It soon became apparent what was on the other end of the line.

After nearly losing his footing entirely on the edge of the shore, he stepped down into the water. I set my camera down and told him to hand me the pole so I could try to reel it closer to the shore for him to grab it.

Took a few tries as it was putting up a bit of a fight, but he finally got hold of it.

Perfect timing with my arbitrary definitions of seasons, we got 2 feet of snow on December 1st. I will also include the aftermath in this album, cleaning up on December 2nd, and roof raking later in the week. Strangely, we have not had anything near this bad again as of February 16th. We had a few storms of a few inches, which is fine with me - the perfect amount for skiing. Lately though it's been only ice storms - a bit of snow, then a lot of sleet and freezing rain, then rain which waterlogs it, then back to snow and it all freezes. It has been horrible to clean that up, sometimes several times a week, so at this point I hope the groundhog is right.

Side note - Part of my New Year's Resolution was to catch up on Flickr. I am doing that, but it takes a long time. I have set an unrealistic goal to finish the winter album by March 1st. I haven't started it yet.

Took a trip to gasworks! Its always nice spending some alone time doing what you love.
