Timing photos on Flickr

This is a photograph from the annual Na Fianna AC "Bob Heffernan" 5KM Road Race and Fun Run which was held in Johnstownbridge, Co. Kildare, Ireland on Tuesday 22nd May 2018 at 20:00. The race is now firmly established on the Leinster road racing calendar with athletes travelling from all over the region to take part. The race has gained a glowing reputation as being one of the fastest 5KM road races in Ireland. It is one of the rare occasions around road racing circles these days where a very small club can organise a very successful large participation race. Today's race had another very large attendance with over 400 participants finishing the race following on from a similar number of finishers last year. Popup Races were the official timing and event management partners of the race.

This race commemorates the years of work and volunteering that local man Bob Heffernan gave to Meath, Leinster, and Irish athletics from grass roots upwards and his work with the host club Na Fianna AC. Na Fianna AC are typical of many rural sporting clubs who have a large catchment area which combines rural North Kildare and South Meath. The race, known affectionately by club-members as simply "Bob's race" is a fitting tribute to commemorate his contribution to this sport. Indeed, not many road races are held in the same affection by runners as Bob's Race with runners returning back every year to sample the course and the wonderful atmosphere again.

Our family remembers the days 15 years ago when this race was held in the village of Rathmoylan about 10 miles from the current venue. In those days the race was deemed a success if 75 to 100 runners made the start line. What a testimony to the hard work of Na Fianna AC today's race is! The weather was perfect for road racing - hardly any wind and wonderful warm temperatures - with bright hazy sunshine.

The race is part of the Popup Races KIA Race Series. The KIA race series is Irelands newest race series, taking in 7 of the top road races in the country and finishing with a brand new finale in Mondello Park in September 2018. It is also part of the annual Meath AAI Road Race League despite the fact that the race is run completely in County Kildare. The current route for the race has stayed the same over the past few years. However previous to that the race was held in Enfield and also Rathmoylan in County Meath. The race starts on the busy Enfield to Endenderry road and this requires a big effort from stewards and marshalls. However, as always, the event was a resounding success with personal bests and great runs from many of the participants. The course is very fast and flat - it is a one loop course which is left-handed in terms of turns. Indeed some parts of the route between 2 and 4 K have been resurfaced recently adding a flat smooth track like surface to this section.

The prize giving and refreshments for runners is provided in the Nightclub section of the Hamlet Court Hotel.

Bohermeen 5KM - Patrick Bell 5KM 2018 by Peter Mooney

This is a photograph from the 33rd annual Bohermeen AC Patrick Bell and Nicky Phillips Memorial 5KM Road Race, Jog, Walk, and Fun Run which was held at Bohermeen AC, Ardbracan, Navan, Co. Meath, Ireland at 19:30 on Saturday, 8th June 2018. The race was held in very sunny conditions. The race commemorates Patrick Bell, the late Bohermeen clubman who died tragically in the summer of 1985 following a traffic accident, whilst returning home from Cork having competed in the National track championships. Nicky Phillips is a former athlete and president of Bohermeen AC and is also remembered today. The wonderful atmosphere, the great racing and participation, the work by the club, Meath Athletics, the local community, and the beautiful summer's day, yet again, a fitting tribute to Patrick's memory and his contribution to Athletics in Ireland. The race also commemorates clubman Nicky Philips. Congratulations to everyone involved. Everything that is good about grassroots athletics and running in Ireland was on show in Bohermeen today. The race started 400m from the Bohermeen AC track and heads towards Navan. The course then makes 3 right hand turns around some beautiful rural country roads and turns back to Bohermeen AC and then back for the final kilometer which is straight to the track and the finish on about 60 meters of athletics track. Participants, friends and families were able to enjoy a BBQ outside on the infield of the athletics track at the club house. Over 450 runners, walkers and joggers took part in today's event with many more choosing to take part without chip timing.

Incredibly - I took this shot at the very instant that Adam took a shot from my right with his flash.. I mean - what are the odds? I was shooting available light - he was using flash, and we were both taking pictures of the girls outside the Little Rhein Restaurant on the Riverwalk in San Antonio. Jo Ann was on the phone with Travis, so we were just standing around till she finished, and this was the result.. I had to bring the exposure down in processing to keep the brightness from Adam's flash from washing out the photo - but it was just such a coincidence, I had to post it..

This is a photograph from the Cork City Marathon 2014 which was held in Cork City, Ireland on Bank Holiday Monday June 2nd 2014 starting at 09:00. There are three different events: The full marathon, The Half Marathon, and a full relay of the full marathon course.

►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

Blipfoto Post for Tuesday 16 November 2010: Patience, Timing and Balance...

Are three virtues that I find very difficult to acheive for my photography at this time of year.

Patience: My commute is at a fixed time of day so there is a brief period of the year when my journey takes me across the River Forth at the right time of day to experience the sunrise. This happens twice a year, once in November and once in February so I only get a chance to get this picture about twice a year.

Timing: The light changes fast at this time of day and the sky and water light up like this for only a few minutes so you have to be fast to get into position to take the shot.

Balance: At this time of year the pavement is covered in ice....so dashing the few hundred yards from the car to the required position for the shot carrying a camera and tripod requires a lot of balance on such a slippery surface.

I'm happy to report that all three came together this morning and this shot is (I believe) an improvement on the last two shots taken last February and November. Now all I have to do is wait until February for my next attempt!

FINISH: Mullingar Road League 2016 - Round 2 by Peter Mooney

This is a photograph from the 2nd round of the 2016 Pat Finnerty Memorial 5KM Road League which was held in Belvedere House and Gardens, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Wednesday 11th May 2016 at 20:00. The Road League is promoted and organised by Mulligar Harriers Athletic Club. It is very well established as an annual event which takes place on every Wednesday night in the month of May. Tonight the weather was humid and mild making for very good running conditions. About 270 participants took part in the race which runs a traffic free course over a mix of road and hilly forest trail. Participants must complete any three races out of four races to be included in the final overall standings.

FINISH - Multy 5KM 2016 by Peter Mooney

This is a photograph from the finish of the 5th Annual Multyfarnham (Multy) 5KM which was held in the village of Multyfarnham about 15KM west of Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Wednesday 1st June 2016 at 20:00. Almost 200 participants took to the route including runners, joggers and walkers which was on an out-and-back course on beautiful country roads. The weather was perfect for racing and running with the fast course and good weather providing personal and seasonal bests for many of the participants. The GAA Club and Community Centre provided car-parking and the race headquarters. The course starts at the base of a long challenging hill which then brings runners on a beautiful 3KM loop around the roads and laneways in the hills before turning back towards Multy village and taking the advantage of the downhill which was tackled at the start of the race.
