Blipfoto Post for Tuesday 16 November 2010: Patience, Timing and Balance...

Are three virtues that I find very difficult to acheive for my photography at this time of year.

Patience: My commute is at a fixed time of day so there is a brief period of the year when my journey takes me across the River Forth at the right time of day to experience the sunrise. This happens twice a year, once in November and once in February so I only get a chance to get this picture about twice a year.

Timing: The light changes fast at this time of day and the sky and water light up like this for only a few minutes so you have to be fast to get into position to take the shot.

Balance: At this time of year the pavement is covered in ice....so dashing the few hundred yards from the car to the required position for the shot carrying a camera and tripod requires a lot of balance on such a slippery surface.

I'm happy to report that all three came together this morning and this shot is (I believe) an improvement on the last two shots taken last February and November. Now all I have to do is wait until February for my next attempt!

EDIT: This hit the Spotlight page of Blipfoto on 17 Nov 2010

I just happened to see this one passing by with a bunch of cars about to cross in front of me from the other direction. Oh well, you do what you can.

Timing is everything when it comes to a marching band's drum line. Ours is always "spot-on."

At the end of the evening, we thought we'd be running late when we were heading to the Ferris Wheel, but we weren't! This was the perfect time to be on it!!

This is a photograph from the Longwood GAA 10KM Road Race and Fun Run 2013 which was held in Longwood Village, Co. Meath, Ireland on Sunday 13th October 2013 at 14:00. This is the fourth year which Longwood GAA have hosted race events. In the three previous years the club had organised a 5KM road race. This year, for the first time, the club have added a 10KM road race to the agenda on the day. The events were organised as fundraisers for both the adult and juvenille teams at Longwood GAA club. The event also provided a fundraising opportunity for the local St. Vincent de Paul charity. Overall the whole day was a great success with the hard work put in by the organising committee ensuring that participants enjoyed their race experience. Both routes were accurately measured, kilometer points clearly marked, junctions well stewarded, and electronic timing provided. The event provided my local fun runners with a local event to support whilst at the same time providing runners preparing for events such as the Dublin marathon with an opportunity to race a short, fast, distance in the lead up to marathon day.

Longwood is a small village in South East Co. Meath and is close to the town of Enfield with access to the M4 Motorway.

Overall Race Summary

Participants:

Weather:

5KM Course: The 5KM course changed direction for the 2013 event. The race this year went on the reverse of the 2012 route. This seen the 5KM start at the Longwood GAA grounds and proceed into Longwood village. Runners then took a left turn in the Village down St. Oliver's Road. This straight section of road brings runners to a left turn onto a very well maintained boreen road for less than one kilometer. The race then emerges and joins with the 10KM at Stoneyford where the runners take a left and then another left before arriving back at the finish line in Longwood GAA club. Overall this is a very fast and flat 5KM with no hills to speak of.

10KM Course: The 10KM is new for 2013. The 10KM event begins in Longwood Village outside Stoney's Pub (goo.gl/maps/Of4fW) and proceeds westward out of the village. There are some interesting points along this part of the course. At the 2KM point the runners will run under the double bridges - an aquaduct for the Royal Canal and a bridge carrying the Dublin Sligo Railway line. The race then enters county Kildare just before the 3km and after taking a right turn at the four-cross roads known locally as Lally's Cross it returns to County Meath on top of the River Boyne Bridge (Ashfield Bridge) which forms the county boundary. The race follows a straight road for the next 2KM until runners encounter Blackshade bridge which is the toughest climb on the route. As a point of interest Blackshade bridge brings runners back over the Royal Canal and the Railway line. The race then crosses the River Boyne again at Stoneyford before taking a right which will bring runners on a testing two kilometer stretch with some short hills. The 10KM course then joins with the 5Km course for the final 1.5KM back to Longwood GAA club for the finish.

We take these photographs as a hobby and as a contribution to the running community in Ireland. Our only "cost" is our request that if you are using these images without the watermark: (1) on social media sites such as Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, Twitter,LinkedIn, Google+, etc or (2) other websites, blogs, web multimedia, commercial/promotional material that you must provide a link back to our Flickr page to attribute us.

This also extends the use of these images for Facebook profile pictures. In these cases please make a separate wall or blog post with a link to our Flickr page. If you do not know how this should be done for Facebook or other social media please email us and we will be happy to help suggest how to link to us.

Friends of St. Lukes is one of the nominated charities for the event www.friendsofstlukes.ie/

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.

Don't like your photograph here?

That's OK! We understand!

If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.

I want to tell people about these great photographs!

To view ignition timing a mirror is needed to view markings.

My method.

Jack up drivers side wheel.

Remove distributor cap

Remove spark plugs. Locate cylinder 1 (near radiator) turn front wheel

until piston is at the top. Observe rotor arm is pointing to cylinder 1.

Turn the wheel until contact breakers just begin to open.

Use a 12v bulb between Ignition coil CB and ground for accuracy.

Adjust distributor timing to 5 degrees.

Good thing I grilled early, because a little thunderstorm popped up out of nowhere, and it poured for a little while. Big fat drops of rain.. And as much as my attitude has changed about grilling, doing it in the rain still sucks!

My next house will have an outdoor kitchen that's rain-proof, and it'll be a whole new ball game. I want a lanai that's wide enough to stay dry under even in a driving rainstorm, because I do love to watch it rain - I just don't want to get wet while I watch. Or killed by lightning..

Deliberate, By Chance...

"Maybe chance is God’s other name?" Somebody who was smarter than me, said that to me once. Most people I know are smarter than me, so that part was not memorable, however... what I have noticed is that the experience of what we call serendipity — the gladsome coincidence of two events — often creeps into my viewfinder.

Is it timing or “co-incidence”?

Co-incidence means that two events unexpectedly happen at the same time.

Timing, it seems to me, is more deliberate. Especially with a camera.

In any event, both of these things show up in my photos, often. Many of my images have unexpected happenstance in them.

It's the 'because why' part I wonder about.

I find that sort of creepy yet fascinating.

No need for a mechanical advance.

These MSD fixed curve timing computers have a pre-programmed timing curve that eliminates the need for a mechanical advance. When you start the car, the timing computers retard the timing 20 degrees from the set mechanical timing. This provides easy starting and smooth idle. The timing begins to advance when the engine speed reaches 1,000 rpm and continues until 3,000 rpm, when the total timing is reached. They also have a separate high-speed retard circuit that allows you to activate a retard amount via a switch, to retard the timing during times of nitrous or high rpm. The retard amount is adjustable with plug-in modules, and 2, 3, and 4 degree modules are supplied. These units install easily, and can be used on 4, 6, or 8-cylinder engines with an MSD ignition control.

1996 Jeep 4.0l engine timing chain. Original timing chain showing 20 pins between the marks compared to the 15 Chilton's says should be there.

It took me a while to figure this out without the instruction sheet. The sync cord has a pressure switch on the end which is normally closed (on). The switch body screws into the cable release fitting, where the cable release link in the shutter holds the switch open until the shutter is tripped.

The length of throw is adjusted by screwing the body in or out on the threaded shaft, then locking with the lock ring. For an M-class flashbulb, a test bulb should start to glow just before the shutter opens (20ms to peak, but I can only guess).

The flash was missing its original test bulb (I think it came with one), so I used a single filament automotive turn signal bulb. Because it is a 12V bulb for a higher amperage system, I could only get an orange glow from the 3V in the battery case (2 C-cells), but it was enough to determine when the switch is closed.

Gary Kawabata flew a nice 5.5" bird on a J315R. Unfortunately, all you can see is the flame... my timing was just a little off here. Still, a neat shot!
