From Wikipedia: The first digital electronic watch, a Pulsar LED prototype in 1970, was developed jointly by Hamilton Watch Company and Electro-Data, founded by George H. Thiess. John Bergey, the head of Hamilton's Pulsar division, said that he was inspired to make a digital timepiece by the then-futuristic digital clock that Hamilton themselves made for the 1968 science fiction film 2001: A Space Odyssey. On April 4, 1972, the Pulsar was finally ready, made in 18-carat gold and sold for $2,100. It had a red light-emitting diode (LED) display.

Digital LED watches were very expensive and out of reach to the common consumer until 1975, when Texas Instruments started to mass-produce LED watches inside a plastic case. These watches, which first retailed for only $20, reduced to $10 in 1976, saw Pulsar lose $6 million and the Pulsar brand sold to Seiko.

An early LED watch that was rather problematic was The Black Watch made and sold by British company Sinclair Research in 1975. This was only sold for a few years, as production problems and returned (faulty) product forced the company to cease production.

Most watches with LED displays required that the user press a button to see the time displayed for a few seconds, because LEDs used so much power that they could not be kept operating continuously. Usually the LED display color would be red. Watches with LED displays were popular for a few years, but soon the LED displays were superseded by liquid crystal displays (LCDs), which used less battery power and were much more convenient in use, with the display always visible and no need to push a button before seeing the time. Only in darkness you had to press a button to light the display with a tiny light bulb, later illuminating LEDs.

While walking around I saw these watches

This was the first watch my parents ever bought for me. I remember it in the box. It had a red strap with a series of circles cut into it. Probably some time around 1982, maybe a little later. I am extremely pleased to have found it again, and may well make it a new strap soon.

This is the wristband peeled off of my timex ironman watch. The wristband was glued to the watch. Over time, the action of putting on and taking off the watch cracked the hard plastic on the watch itself.

The wristband is also very unusual in that it is a single piece. Most watches have to separate bands on hinges, but this one is a single continuous piece of rubber from end to end.

I have a smart watch I wear to work which was my emigration gift from my old colleagues. This isn't it; this is my trusty well-travelled Timex which has hiked in Virginia, dived in the Pacific, surfed in the Tasman, 10k'd in London, half-marathon'd in Auckland and, rather handily, also tells the time. The Indiglo feature is great - especially when I wake up in strange dark hotel rooms, wondering where I am and what the time is.

My youngest, six years, got his first watch today. He knew he

definitely wanted a digital watch that was water resistant and could

go under water. He is now timing everything ;-)

I'm a massive fan of the Dreamcast and of all the games Shenmue stands out as the most ambitious. But when playing this game I was not to realise that the watch used by Ryo Hazuki to ensure that he doesn't get home too late (or he'll get an earful from Ine-san) is loosely based on a Timex watch released at around the time of development. What adds confusion to that is that the game was developed over many years in the mid 90's. The game is based on the 80's meaning that this watch would not have existed in the game's setting!

I picked this watch up on eBay with the band in bad shape but the watch itself functioning rather well. I've since bought a replacement band as close to the original and proud to say this is perhaps the nerdiest item in my collection.
