Timex 197(?) Sprite with nice Red and Black dial. Watch is on the small side for a men's watch and could be a boy's or ladies' watch. A favorite.

Stainless steel case. Leather strap. Black dial. Quartz movement. INDIGLO nightlight. Case 39mm. Water resistant 30 meters.

The latest addition to the collection is the first quartz-driven watch since I ventured down this rabbit-hole in October 2018.

I wanted an inexpensive field watch I could wear and rely on, and not worry too much about wear and tear: in short, a "beater".

This Timex MK1 (reference no. TW2R37400) fits the bill, with clearly legible 40mm dial, lumed hands and indices, plus the company's proprietary Indiglo, activated while depressing the crown.

The case is very pleasing black anodised alumnium, measuring 47mm from lug tip to lug tip, and it wears well on my slender six-inch wrist, feeling neither big nor bulky.

The supplied 20mm-wide black NATO strap is also furnished with what appears to be hardware in the same material. The strap is stitched, rather than just bonded, and feels well made. I look forward to trying it out with other watches.

The crystal is acrylic, domed to protrude perhaps 2mm+ from the case surface, and the back stainless steel - presumably the crown is too - proclaiming 30 metres of water resistance.

Twelve- and twenty-four-hour arabic numerals complete the field-watch look.

All in all, I'm very pleased with this watch. For the 42 GBP (delivered) I paid, it more than fits the bill. It's so light and comfortable (~35g with strap) that I forget I'm wearing a watch.

The only negatives are that it does have quite a loud tick, which isn't an issue in daily use, but means it does live in a bedside drawer overnight. The other thing is I would have liked to see a black crown as well, to tie in with the blackout look of the rest of the piece.

But these are minor issues in a watch of this price.
