Decorative tiles on the fireplace at the Claremont branch library, Berkeley, CA, library system.

From the City's webpages:

"Opening in October 1924, Berkeley's Clarement Library on Benvenue was designed by renowned Berkeley architect James W. Placheck, who also designed Central Library. Facilities included an 'adult reading room with alcove, children’s room, librarian’s room, work room and wash rooms.' Construction cost $24,000.

In 1976 the Tudor-style building was expanded with a modern addition that added space for special collections and a children’s reading room."

Thanks so much to Adam (army.arch) for answering my question about the maker of the tiles. Please see his contribution below, showing us a page from the company's catalog! --and revealing that the original tiles cost 99 cents each! These designs were called, "The Spear", and "The Horn".

I (re)created this pattern in Blender (a free 3D modelling, rendering, animation, and game engine program from www.blender.org). I'm still new to Blender so it took several hours for me to figure out how to do it right. That, and I did it the hard way while learning Blender was not the best choice for creating patterns like this. Afterwards, someone told me about Inkscape ( www.inkscape.org ).

Anyway, I was inspired by these photos of a "Ramadan" Arabic pattern taken by Dennis M. Andrews de paul:

Needless to say, it took a while to figure out how to reproduce this pattern from the photos, let alone in Blender by creating vertices and lines. Then I subdivided a few times and applied a "halo" material.

Also, I plan on releasing a lantern model made (almost finished) in Blender and using this pattern for the glass.

I found this place that calls itself a "clay studio" on the bayfront of Corpus Christi, Texas. It looks interesting, and we will try to visit longer later on. It was rather jammed when we stopped, so we didn't go in.

Some nice Victorian tile.

The new bathroom tiles. Everything still needs a few more wipe-downs to get the dust and film from the grout off, but it's coming along. Might have fixtures back in there by tomorrow too.

Tile to make the magic happen.

Fascinating porcelain roofing tiles in Rui Barbosa's mansion. Isn't it another treasure? :¬)

"Maria Augusta" was the name of Rui Barbosa's wife. Them, he gave her name to the mansion.
