The work crews were preparing to start the remodel tonight just after closing. The floor tiles are being taken out in one section. I do not know if this store will get concrete floors or new white tiling instead.
The most recent remodel in the nearby city of Walnut Creek tried concrete floors, but switched back to white tiles after the concrete floor was found to have too many cracks.
A series of press-moulded decorative tiles were designed by Harold Stabler and manufactured by Poole Pottery to adorn the walls of several stations built or refurbished as part of the New Works Programme in the 1930s.
Tiles were produced for Aldgate East, Bethnal Green, St John's Wood, St Paul's and Swiss Cottage. There are a total of eighteen different tile designs, but only Swiss Cottage has examples of the whole set. Four examples from Swiss Cottage are depicted here.
Plaza España, Managua, Nicaragua.
These 1970s tiles are part of the stairs going up to a supermarket on Plaza España in Managua, Nicaragua. For more photos from this place, constructed just before the devastating earthquake of 1972 and largely intact from it, please see my plaza españa set.
Three tiles from Marsden. George Marsden patented a technique for incorporating coloured slip into the front of a tile as it was pressed, and these are good examples of this work, with some subsequent hand embellishing. A year or two either side of 1900.

Das Ceramic Work Centre .ekwc, s’Hertogenbosch, Niederlanden
Handmade polymer clay tiles with millefiore and gold-leaf accents. For an idea of size the one on the left (swirls on bottom-purp/greens) is 1 3/4 x 1 1/2".
Lisbon, Mar. 3, 2014.
After I shot this photo, I realized that I had shot a repetitive pattern of life, not just of tiles. On Mar. 7, I went back with a print an offered it to the gentleman, Carlos Pedrosa. I hope to see him there for a long time.

Spanish Tile Floor is Tivoli Attraction
There is much of interest concerning many of the details of design and finish of Crandall's Tivoli theater, at Fourteenth street and Park road northwest, that has not found its way into print during all of the excitement of dedicating the new temple of the arts. One feature that has elicited unusual comment since the inaugural a week ago last night is the Spanish Tile floor in the entrance foyer.
This floor is in a flower design executed in the most delicate pastel shades. It is of interest to know that this tile is made only by Spaniards, who keep the process secret. It was laid in the Tivoli by Edward Stevens. The only other installation of this design ever made is in the Seville Tea Room at Havana Cuba. This floor has long been considered by architects and artists to be the most beautiful in existence.

12/08 update: Mayorga has closed and these are behind locked doors again.
This is part of a tiled wall outside a huge block of flats in Rotherhithe, right next to the River Thames. The tiles play tricks on your eyes as they look like they are undulating, when in fast they are completely straight. I love the vibrant colours these provide.
This 3 x 3 glass subway tile was purchased from www.susanjablon.com. She has some of the best customer service around! I think the color is Green apple.

In the Convento de Cristo, Tomar. One of the 'easter eggs' of the convent - tiny treasures that you have to look for, and that aren't in the guidebook, but which for me provided some of the highlights of the day.
This beautiful handmade tile is made of polymer clay on a 6" square piece of treated hardboard and features one of my favorite Fossil watches. The watch face is filled with a light amber liquid and tiny gears, watch hands and screws float around inside. Also included are different types of leather and metal watch bands, an old key, a metal leaf, a green glass gem, miscellaneous jewelry pieces, a lock carved from hematite and a curious old pendant with very unusual polished stones. The stones appear black or a very dark gray but when light hits the stones it reveals a wriggly pale blue chatoyancy with a splash of gold. Subtle beauty!
I love blue tile, and really tried to find an area of the yard where I could incorporate this look, it will happen someday!
The Sydney Opera House's sails are covered in 1,056,000 specially designed tiles of two varieties: ice and snow. The arrangements of the two tile types on chevrons are such that the sunlight reflects the sails variably based on their position, angle and timing. Two years of design work were poured into the tiles to ensure a perfect pattern such that the Sydney Opera House is consequently a living, breathing building, changing its appearance with time.
An abstract of the Sydney Opera House. I love the pattern of the tiles and the forms of the 'sails'.
An old Color Tile sign along Route 45 in Deptford, NJ, last used by Blockbuster Video. COLOR would fill the top portion and TILE in the bottom squares. Color Tile was a chain of flooring stores owned by Tandy who was also Radio Shack's parent company. Sometimes it was called Color Tile Supermarket.
