Returning home from a long day of birding in Prince Edward County. The morning was glorious with lots of birds and sun, but the afternoon clouded over and there was quite a lot of rain. The sky began to clear as we headed home after a long day outdoors.
I took this photo from the car as we crossed the bridge from the county back to mainland (PEC is not quite an island, but almost). This bridge is very high to allow the big lakers to travel Lake Ontario.

As I recover from shoulder surgery, I have assigned myself a big, major, huge project…and yes it concerns photography! My mission, should I decide to accept it (Mission Impossible reference) is to clean out and organize my 2TB external hard drive…that contains every digital photo that I have retained since 1985. The majority also have the RAW file associated with that photo attached. Files numbering in the tens of thousands that have been filed, misfiled, triple duplicated and thrown into folders as if I were dealing cards. My ADHD and sense of personal embarrassment will simply not allow this craziness to continue.
The blessing of this process is not just the discovery of photos long forgotten, but the memories contained. These files may well prove themselves to be priceless…not just for the memories depicted in the photos, but as a partner as I spent the next five weeks, the hours ahead fighting off my nemesis, boredom!
Here is one from a very good day…
You know that it was a very good day when you can remember everything about that day, the temperature, the warmth of the sun, the smell of a spring pasture and in this case anxiety of having to go to work when your best girl is about to give birth! It was the 13th of May, 2010 and our National Champion (Reserve Color Champion, 2006 AOBA Nationals) girl Rosalita was in labor. Joann and I both went to work to check in and start clearing the days schedule, both securing the day off with bosses and returning to the farm in record time.
A quick switch from work to farm cloths and a short trot to the front pasture found that Rosalita had already lost her mucus plug…her cria would be born anytime now. It was time to grab some lawn chairs, my camera and our birthing kit and just wait for things to progress. In the back of my mind, I prayed for a smooth, natural birth and that I would not have to put on the big gloves ever again and assist.
The next hour provided us with a memory of a lifetime as Giacomo would come into the world! A 19.2-pound male from Legend’s Challenger, at that time one of the top gray males in the country. The beauty of the moment, the cycle of life experience on such a beautiful May day is forever etched into my soul. Joann and I removed the remnants of the birth sack and dried our gift. The name Giacomo was chosen as it was in honor of my father who had passed some four years before. It was his childhood nickname and I know that it would have made him smile…like this photo does for me now as I utilize the editing program Lightroom to bring it to life.
This photo captures the bonding process/moment that alpaca mothers do just after birth. She gently takes her lips and nose and rub it against that of her cria, all the while making a clicking sound that bonds the two together for life. She will also use the same area to help her cria stay steady on its wabbly, minutes old legs.
What a blessing it is to witness not just the new physical body that God had created, but also the pure, palpable, natural love that was immediate between mother and son as well.
I didn’t know it then, but Giacomo would be the last cria born to us at Serene-n-Green Alpacas. In the early fall of 2010, a couple came to the farm and bought our last five alpacas, water buckets, farm name, logos, hay and trailer to start their own turn-key alpaca farm in Ohio.
Today, when anyone asks if I miss raising alpacas my response is immediate and direct. I miss birthing those babies!
Chase experiences, not things!

I think I know
Why I can’t let go
I’m still caught up in the afterglow
And time moves slow
You lose control
When your mind runs off to places you can’t go

Those great whites, they have big teeth
Hope they bite you
Thought you said that you would always be in love
But you're not in love no more
Did it frighten you

Those who know the estate at Studley Royal will be more than used to the presence of Jackdaws down by the lake. It is probably the presence of the cafe and the visitors al fresco dining that acts as the lure. We weren't in the cafe at this time but sure enough there were a good number of these inquisitive crows doing the rounds.
Look closely at the head and there is some fabulous detail.
It's that time of year again.....
I hope you like this one, as shot, of sleepy King Penguins. They are much like emperor penguins, but smaller in size, and are found on the sub-Antarctic Islands, South Georgia, and other similar islands of the region.
Greetings and many thanks for you comments. Have a warm and cosy weekend!
Those Mont-de-Marsan pilots sure knew how to make a great impression while arriving in Evreux, in preparation for the annual Bastille Day parade. They arrived for a fast and low break with 7 aircrafts. What a sight!
One from last year that I've never done anything with for some reason, probably because it's a so well photographed scene that it doesn't have too much personal interest. That doesn't mean it's not beautiful, and if I was encouraged enough to photograph it in the first place there must have been something special going on.

The rocks are the scene anytime of year, but in fall (and probably winter too) when most of the plants have gone brown, there is little to distract one from contemplating the rocks.
The Shropshire Hills are an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
The hills, rolling farmland, woods and river valleys of this varied and special landscape are rich in geology and wildlife and ingrained with heritage. Off the beaten track and tranquil, this is a living, working place, loved by locals and visitors alike for its quality of environment, for walking and activities of all levels, and for relaxation and inspiration.
South Shropshire has amazing views across heavenly English Countryside. These are the real "Blue Remembered Hills" that Housman wrote about.
A landscape of green golden valleys rising to dramatic hills and moorlands. A hidden history of Marcher Lords - long since dead, concealed pagan rites and legends, castles and tiny hamlets all waiting to be found. No wonder this is officially an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Within South Shropshire are:- Shropshire's gastronomic capital Ludlow, the Alpine like setting of Church Stretton, Bishops Castle famed for it's microbrewery, Cleobury Mortimer, Craven Arms and Clun, immortalised by A.E.Housman. Each couldn't be more different or distinctive.
Real shopping in proper shops, lively street markets, antique markets, specialist food shops, art and craft galleries - all give retail therapy Shropshire style.
Storybook castles at Clun, Ludlow and Stokesay - a 13th Century fortified manor house said to be so beautiful that when attacked no-one could bring themselves to destroy it

Into my heart an air that kills
From yon far country blows:
What are those blue remembered hills,
What spires, what farms are those?
That is the land of lost content,
I see it shining plain,
The happy highways where I went
And cannot come again.

Ever have one of those days? From the looks of it, this male Northern Cardinal is having one.
Perhaps he's recovering from his summer molt? Could he have just finished a quick dip in a birdbath? Maybe he just puffed up while taking a deep breath and I caught him in the middle? Or possibly his feathers are ruffled because he hasn't had his morning safflower seed and there was no room at the feeder?
Those birds are not brushes, they are real :)
I took this with my best friend yesterday and she thought I was obsessed with birds because everytime I saw a bird in the sky, I screamed "bird" and busted out my camera. Hahaha :)
am I the only one who is bothered by the fact that Flickr messes up the dates?! OH WAIT. OH SNAP. I DID TAKE THIS YESTERDAY. HAHAHAHAHA. Nevermind. It usually does though :P
Goodnight everybody :)
Sunsets are so different every day, there are those that are just so epic and vibrant that make them unforgettable and then there are others that are just so much more soft and reflective. This is one of those others that I was lucky enough to witness and enjoy.
God gives miracles to those who believe, courage to those with faith, hope to those who dream, love to those who accept and forgiveness to those who ask.
Those two large Weeping Willows next to the Canon-Pond more or less across the road from where we live are a delight to insects and to those who like them. Although not so much fun for anyone with pollen allergies.
Andrena vaga, the Grey-backed Mining Bee, has a penchant for Willow Pollen and you won't see them much once those catkins have yielded to foliage. Wonderful Bernhard Jacobi - see his comment below - thinks: Cineraria. I would say: possibly, but I can't see the specific black hairband across the thorax nor the blue-black hue (but checking on my Samsung phone, there may be a bluelike hue). So I'm making it an 'or' given Jacobi's expertise.
In this case, our Bee is braving quite chilly weather, about 7 C. but pollen and nectar are too enticing to stay away!

Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Those days of soda and pretzels and beer
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Dust off the sun and moon and sing a song of cheer
Just fill your basket full of sandwiches and weenies
Then lock the house up, now you're set
And on the beach you'll see the girls in their bikinis
As cute as ever but they never get 'em wet
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Those days of soda and pretzels and beer
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
You'll wish that summer could always be here
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Those days of soda and pretzels and beer
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Dust off the sun and moon and sing a song of cheer
Don't hafta tell a girl and fella about a drive-in
Or some romantic movie scene
Right from the moment that those lovers start arrivin'
You'll see more kissin' in the cars than on the screen
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Those days of soda and pretzels and beer
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
You'll wish that summer could always be here
You'll wish that summer could always be here
You'll wish that summer could always be here

Another one of those amazing SP 80s consist. 5 units, elephant style and quite the variety of paint and models. Growing up in SoCal my favorite hometown railroad was far and away the SP. Rich in history and in the 80s incredibly short of power. Just about anything would show up and often did. Many of those photos I have posted here and I will continue to do so as I digitize my slides. So much fun digging through this memories. San Timeteo Canyon was favorite place to visit. SP GP40-2 leads a varied consist through San Timeteo Canyon that I have long forgotten the name of. 6.88
One of those days where the kids got the better of me. Can't remember specifically what happened because I'm writing this retrospectively... but they wore me out.
Those of you that have known me a while will be aware of my 'history' with this particular species!!!!
This is only my 2nd ever find, 2 ½ years after my first!
Excited to say the least!

Those who know the summit of Grisedale Pike will be familiar with the nicely inclined slab that makes for a fine backrest. On this day it also acted as a great windshield as well.
This relaxed selfie shows me making the most out of the shelter and looking eastwards from the summit.
