All those interested in wildlife will know occasions like this. You walk miles trying to find wildlife and when you do it scatters in all directions. But just now and then something like this happens, the wildlife just doesn't see you - this hare just kept coming closer and closer.
I love the harlequin tears that seem to trickle down Nigel's face! His white tuxedo really set off his dark suit! But those eyes- demure and shy - he knows we think he is beautiful!!
I had very little cooperation with the majority of the cats! I still hope to get another shot for Caturday before it's closed!!
Happy Caturday! - favorite cat features
I have always found her beautiful eyes hypnotizing. Sometimes when I realize that she has never actually spoken a single word to me, I'm really surprised and can hardly believe it. We have so much shared experience and shared knowledge. Without a single word.
When the sun hits your face just right and you are overwhelmed with appreciation for the fleeting beauty of nature's transformation.

For those that are confused by my title, Don McCullin is a British photographer famed mostly for his war images. He was on the front line of many global conflicts, from Cyprus to Vietnam to Syria and many more besides. There are photos he took that I'm sure everyone will remember when they see them but perhaps do not know he was the author of.
The very first picture that McCullin ever sold was a shot of a gang of boys spread across the first floor of a bombed out building in north London in the late 50s. This image is nothing like his original image which frankly is one of my favourite images of all time for the way it so brilliantly tells the story of a time and a place. But there is something in my photo which immediately reminded me of McCullin's famous composition but in a VERY different way. Here's a link to McCullin's shot for those that may be interested:

And for anyone who truly admires photography it is worth looking up McCullin's work. It is often disturbing because of the subject matter he depicts but it is always exceptional. He is now in his 80s and lives in the quiet English county of Somerset. Instead of wars he now prefers to shoot the landscapes of his adopted county in the most beautiful way. Perhaps an antidote to the terrible things he's witnessed throughout his career.

For those of you who don’t know about Ry Cooder he is probably one of the best slide guitar player that ever played a guitar and he writes music and scores films. I found out about him when I saw the movie “ Crossroads” and saw that he had scored the film. This song “Feelin’ Bad Blues” is from that movie. If you like southern blues then you need to watch this movie it is just loaded with amazing songs Plus it has The Karate Kid in it.
I had planned to go and get a shot of the second largest sailing ship in the world that had been in Plymouth Sound for the past few days, however other commitments prevented me from getting a close shot of it.
While I was on location I seen this young couple sharing a special moment.
Those soft and fuzzy sweaters
Too magical to touch
To see her in that negligee
Is really just too much

I thought in these dire times, a bit of humour might be in order...
My heart goes out to all those affected...
“For although nepenthe has calmed me, I know always that I am an outsider; a stranger in this century and among those who are still men. This I have known ever since I stretched out my fingers to the abomination within that great gilded frame; stretched out my fingers and touched a cold and unyielding surface of polished Steel.”

Those first few MILW Hiawatha's that wandered onto the SOO were just tasty. They looked fantastic and were as good as it gets for MILW power at the time. Couple one to a clean SOO SD and...well you get the picture:). Train 910 arrives at Trout Lake with 192 and 769 on June 21, 1985.
I just couldn't get enough of these units...unquestionably my favorites I saw on my trip. Man they just sounded sooooo good! Despite being cloaked in CN red, white and black, that is only skin deep as these are original home road units, Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway 211 and 212! In fact these two EMD SD38-2s are the very last orignal bought new Missabe units still on the property, part of a five unit order of the 2000 hp normally aspirated locomotives delivered in 1975. The model was a relatively small seller for EMD with just a total of 90 produced including 13 each for sister US Steel roads EJE and BLE.
This shot looks south off the popular St. Louis River Road bridge at the north end of Proctor yard right at about MP 9.1 on modern day CN's North Division Missabe Subdivision mainline. The veteran duo are emitting a nice haze of EMD blue smoke as they switch on the E lead pulling up the Southbound with a cut of mixed freight.
This is an area that needs no introduction to even the most casual fan as the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway is in a word legendary. I won't bore you with pages of history as I couldn't do the road or region justice anyway. It simply needs to be experienced for oneself. But I will direct you to two resources. Absolutely check out the fabulous historical information here: www.missabe.com/

Those were the words of conductor McDowell as he was just a couple miles away. Waiting felt like an eternity at -21c. It wasn't long after he passed that we took cover in the truck yet again.

This is one of those new-to-camera- lens-yard-and-me shots. The house wren arrived some days ago but I was unable to get a shot off until today. Not sure what she’s up to. She’s been checking out all the holes left by the downies and nuthatches and seems to like this one the best. Her pose seems to indicate that she feels she’s part of the in-crowd and I am just glad she acquiesced to do this shoot.
Naturally, this shot was facilitated by perfect positioning of the Adirondack. The major challenge was, however, to not drift off into a snooze. This was accomplished by some mental gymnastics that involved perfecting the recipe for what I call Apple Blossom. Of course it’s not a flower, it’s the perfect summer drink. I was introduced to this in the early eighties in Victoria’s Inner Harbour in a place called the Captain’s Palace (changed to Huntingdon Mansion). It’s one of those Victorian mansions converted into a restaurant and they really serve(d) wonderful fare. And part of the breakfast menu was, you guessed it, the Apple Blossom. I could have stayed there all day sipping this nectar of the gods and observing the goings on in the harbor. They never did tell me what the ingredients were but due to my tenacious nature (I’ve been called a pit bull) I am now getting awfully close and finally reaping the fruits of my labor.
When leaves are on the tree, sitting on one of those two benches would give you an excellent view of little more than leaves on a tree.
The story again for those who didn't see the B&W version:
Two months ago when I was on a morning walk near home I had a close encounter with a yearling moose. It was really curious and kept following me around! It continued to eat calmly even when it was only 2-3 meters away. It even tried to walk all the way up to me, but since they can be dangerous I didn't let it, even though it didn't seem threatening at all. What a wonderful experience!

For those who may be interested, my Journal entry for this day:-
So good to wake to calm seas this morning; we were in Port Stanley harbour. Up for an early breakfast because I was on the first of many shore excursions to see the Bluff Point penguins. We were ferried ashore by barge and greeted at the dock by a cheery woman named Stella who drove us out of town to a rendezvous point. There we were broken into groups of four and loaded into Land Rovers for a cross country bush bash to Bluff Point.
My driver was a man named Eric Goss, unfortunately I was with three women from Puerto Rico, they seemed to have limited English and Eric had no Spanish. I was seated in the back of the Land Rover where it was impossible to have any real conversation with Eric.
At Bluff Point we were greeted by Wardens who pointed out the penguins which were surrounded by small white flags on a slope that fell away towards a bleak bay. There was no escaping a freezing wind, nor the bitter cold. There were three miserable gatherings of Gentoo Penguins on the slope, with not a sign of a King Penguin, which for me were the real attraction.
I scouted around, took photos until my hands froze, and then headed over a windswept knoll towards the Sea Cabbage Café and gift shop. Here we were served warm drinks and home made cakes, I bought postcards and stamps. The home made handicrafts and jams couldn't tempt me.
Expecting the pick up point would be where we were dropped, I headed back over the knoll to where the wardens stood huddled beside a Land Rover. To my delight and relief, four King Penguins stood out in the open without the protection of little white flags. I got a few shots before the penguins headed away from me down hill towards the bay. A Warden called to me, the message was clear, I'd gone too close, but I had my photos and no harm was done.
A convoy of Land Rovers appeared and headed for the Sea Cabbage Café. I was in the wrong place, but my mistake had delivered photos of King Penguins. Eric didn't arrive for a good ten minutes, and when he did, he offered me the passenger seat in the front. There was no need to ask questions of Eric, he talked about his life in the Falklands all the way back to the rendezvous point.
Stella was waiting for us at the rendezvous point, this was clearly a well oiled operation. She drove us back to Stanley where we had the option to be dropped at the edge of town and walk the five blocks to the pier, or she'd deliver us to the pier. The wind made my choice a no brainer, at the pier I found a souvenir shop where I bought a collared t-shirt and a set of Falklands coins. There was nothing to see and few places sheltered from the cold and wind.
The Falklands Authority shop offered wi-fi for £5, which seemed expensive to me, but they had large long tables where people could sit. I wrote my postcards, bought a second t-shirt while what I really wanted was a sweat shirt, but they had nothing in my size. Stanley impressed as a cold and windswept place devoid of trees; there was no option other than to escape to the warmth of the ship and lunch.
Those trees again at Lazonby, i couldn't help but stop with all the mist around the River Eden, but it was the sheep wandering around between the trees that i liked the most. Lazonby, Cumbria.
Just one of those things. I had intended to do a straight photo of me painting Patankar so I stood on the docks next to the easel and made a "painting" of the scene to downsize and copy unto the easel. As it turns out, I liked the painting so here it is.

Layer 1. Windlight Sky: [Tor] Sunrise - Barcelon 2 (Blendmode: Lighten, Opacity 50%)
Layer 2. Windlight Sky: [Tor] Sunrise - Frenlite (Blendmode: Multiply, Opacity 50%)
Note on Frenlite: changed the time a little on Frenlite to deepen the colors a tad
Layer 3. Levels to deepen the colors, reset the middle point from 1 to 0.64
Layer 4. Made a new layer
Use Alt + Merge visible to put all of it on one layer.
Layer 5. Made a copy of this new layer.
Layer 4. Used Filter Gallery: Ink Outlines with no dark intensity and a lot of light intensity to bring out the ocean
Layer 5. Did the same thing again: still not dark intensity but dialed the light intensity to almost all the way to the left side too
Set Layer 5 to Blend mode Darken and opacity 70%
Note: the Ink outlines made a black outline line around the trees and house which I cloned over. Had to clone on both layers.

Yesterday, we buried my mom. It is so sad and final. Such a large piece of me is gone.
I will always remember her where she felt the happiest - in her garden. It came back to life in a slide show at her memorial service. After all, I have taken thousands of photos there over the years...
Don't let life's fence you in
Break those chains and climb within
Walk across those fields of smiles
Forget the hardships and the trials
Walk to the tree, that rises above
Where awaits the sweetest love
Surrounded by the natures green
No more misery will be seen
Only happiness will fill your heart
From the end to the start
Of the field of joy you walk
Where the birds sing and talk
In the fields of peace and love
Under the skies of smiles above
So break those chains, climb within
Don't let life's fence you in
