Stephanie Cantrell

MM #873949

Stephanie was kind enough to participate in a group photo session with some of the gang from Exposure.Detroit, Julie, Ajit, Aaron, Jerry, Mel, Jamie, who allowed us access to her studio, and myself.

Stephanie was a pleasure to work with. Very patient and pleasant the whole time which did a lot for me, this being my first model shoot. Her personality made it easy for us to relax and focus on the shooting. If you're looking for a model to shoot with I'd recommend her in a heartbeat. Thanks, Steph!

Those ears of Gumbo are incredibly useful tools. If I carry Gumbo in my arms (as he often asks me to do), he can't tell where he is when I set him back down. Two approaches help him: I can set him down by something familiar and tap on whatever is near to him. Otherwise, I merely talk to Gumbo as he orients himself. My voice bounces off the objects around him, and he figures out what is where. Once he moves with confidence, which is a matter of seconds not minutes, I know I can stop lending assistance. And, trust me, he knows every inch of our house.

This is a photograph from the Lucan Harriers Athletic Club "Tom Byrne Memorial" 5KM Road Race and fun run which was held in Lucan, Co. Dublin, Ireland on Sunday 11th May 2014 at 11:00. The race invited runners, joggers and walkers of all levels including those training for the Women's Mini Marathon, Parkrunners and Fit4Life Groups. The weekly PARKRUN which is held in Griffen (www.parkrun.ie/griffeen/) was cancelled this weekend to allow runners to take part in this race instead. The race started outside SuperValue Lucan. Passing by the Lucan Harriers Club House the race proceeded into Griffeen Park where the participants completed about 2.5KM of the course before returning back on the road to the finish on the Lucan Harriers track. Thankfully the unseasonally cold and wet weather didn't dampen the atmosphere and over 200 people participated in the event. Well done again to all at Lucan Harriers AC for a superbly organised 5KM event. The race commemorates one of the founding members of Lucan Harriers AC - Tom Byrne.

We have an extensive set of photographs from today in the following Flickr Album: www.flickr.com/photos/peterm7/sets/72157644652669113/

The majority of this race is run within Griffeen Valley Park which is managed by South Dublin County Council. The entire Park consists of over 200 acres. Griffeen was developed during the 1980s and comprised of a series of public open spaces from around the Lucan area. The River Griffeen flows through the park as it flows to meet the River Liffey in Lucan Village.

We use the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License for all our photographs here in this photograph set. What does this mean in reality?

The explaination is very simple.

Attribution- anyone using our photographs gives us an appropriate credit for it. This ensures that people aren't taking our photographs and passing them off as their own. This usually just mean putting a link to our photographs somewhere on your website, blog, or Facebook where other people can see it.

ShareAlike – anyone can use these photographs, and make changes if they like, or incorporate them into a bigger project, but they must make those changes available back to the community under the same terms.

Creative Commons aims to encourage creative sharing. See some examples of Creative Commons photographs on Flickr: www.flickr.com/creativecommons/

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.

Don't like your photograph here?

That's OK! We understand!

If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.

I want to tell people about these great photographs!

You crave funnel cakes as soon as you arrive at the Apple Festival. Wet ribbons of batter crackle and pop until golden and crisp. The steamy swirls of tender yellow dough absorb confectioners’ sugar like sponges. When the scrumptious fatty cake melts on your tongue, you finally exhale, remembering, "This is why I come to the festival every year." This year's funnel cake offered up an additional treat - it was drizzled in caramel. Oh, my.

I found this note when searching for the history of the funnel cake: (From someone named Cathy Z) "My mother and I were looking at your website and noted you are looking for any additional information regarding the origin of the funnel cake. We can't help you with it's origins in Europe but can give insight as to how it became popular in the United States. Funnel cake is a German treat. My ancestors and parents were Pennsylvania Dutch farmers. I can trace it back to my great-grandmother, Emma Miller, who would serve funnel cakes as special treats to the children and sometimes for the farm hands. The recipe came from Germany with either her parents or grandparents. In 1949 or 1950, a man named Dr. Shumaker along with a group of people organized the Kutztown Folk Festival and solicited local organizations to be a part of the festival to sell foods and local yore. The Virginsville Grange (a farming organization) was asked to be part of the festival. Emma's son and daughter-in-law suggested to the grange that they sell Emma's funnel cakes at the festival for .25 cents. The treat was so popular that Emma Miller was interviewed by Dave Garroway of the Today show sometime in the early 1950s. We have not been able to find any record of funnel cakes in the United States prior to them being sold at the Kutztown Folk Festival."

You can get a better look at what I was talking about with the guide rail sets.

Unlike how Albertsons had it, you can enter or exit from either one of these doors. You just have to push on the side where the "Push" sign is.

The same can be said for the Liquor store entrance doors.

VIK is a budget minded resort on some prime beach reality on Bavaro Beach, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. This resort works well for those on a tight budget or with mobility needs as it only takes 5 minutes to walk from the lobby to the ocean, which is rare to find in this location. (Please note, there are no elevators, so if you require an accessible room, be sure to note this so that you can be placed on the ground floor.) While there is a good mix of nationalities, a bulk of guests are European. As such, it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that many women go topless on the beach. Also with a wide mix of nationalities, you will hear all notifications and announcements in several different languages, which becomes daunting for the evening entertainment. As a budget resort, do not expect a stocked mini-

fridge. You are entitled to two large bottles of water. You will want to bring a travel mug with you if you desire to have anything other than water in your room. I actually found the food quality to be a step above several other resorts in this area and the rooms are very spacious.

Names of those who died due to gun violence this last year, in Michigan. Those under 25 years of age have their names listed.

This is to help remember the one year anniversary since the elementary school shooting where twenty (20) children died and six adults when a heavily armed man invaded a Newtown, Conn., elementary school.

Commissioned to mark the 25th anniversary of the founding of the convent. It also commemorates all those who died in World War 1. Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum Glasgow, Scotland- taken by my daughter.

"The large and intricate and important stained glass window, named The Coronation of the Blessed Virgin, created by Irish artist Harry Clarke (1889-1931) is over 4.5 metres in height and is comprised of twenty panels. It was commissioned in 1923 by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur for the convent chapel in Dowanhill, Glasgow. It was installed in 1924 and remained in place until 1981. After a period on loan to St Andrew’s College, Bearsden Glasgow Museums purchased the window with assistance from the Art Fund and the Heritage Lottery Fund in 2002.

The window, which depicts the Coronation of the Blessed Virgin as Queen of Heaven by Christ surrounded by angels and saints, was the first of four windows made by the artist for the chapel. It was commissioned to mark the 25th anniversary of the founding of the convent and as a memorial to those who died in World War I. The commission was possible thanks to the generosity of the post-1918 students, past and present, who wished to have a war memorial window installed to commemorate loved ones they had lost. It is widely recognised as one of his most important works. When the piece was first exhibited in Dublin, before it was dispatched to Glasgow, it made such an impact that an article in the Irish Independent called for a halt on the export of such ‘native treasures’.

The Coronation of the Blessed Virgin is mounted on the wall, backlit by light boxes, in the Study Centre on the first floor of Kelvingrove Museum. The display is accompanied by a detailed digital interpretation that allows visitors to explore the fascinating story contained within the window and the history of Notre Dame Chapel. This has been enhanced by first-person interviews with Sisters and former pupils of the teaching convent. They were amongst the first people to view the window, alongside Glasgow Museums stained glass conservator Marie Stumpff who worked on the conservation.

Sister Maire Gallagher who was a student and sister of Notre Dame said: 'It’s truly wonderful to see the window again, it looks stunning. I left school and went on to college and in those days it was residential so you stayed all the time and went to Mass with the sisters every morning. The sisters sat in the front so if you were a student you were behind the area where you could actually see the stained glass.

'I don’t think I actually ever saw it apart from being conscious that it was a fantastic colour of blue until I went back as a Sister of Notre Dame. I went back to that community in 1961 and then of course as a sister I could go right down to the front and I could walk round the side aisles and look at everything.'

I have a recollection of being struck by a marvellous story. I was also struck by the number of women saints in the picture. That was unusual.

'I think Kelvingrove is a fitting home for such an important piece of art, connecting the city of the past with the people who live here today. The display will also allow those who come to see the window to understand all that Harry Clarke was trying to convey when he created this beautiful stained glass window all those years ago.' Those of you who either know me well, or have known me for a long time, know that I went to Arizona State University many, many years ago. Well, to quote George Costanza, I'm back baby. I recently signed up for their online BFA in digital photography, and just turned in part of my first week's assignment (a photo shoot of stuff involving water). I'll probably finish this just in time for retirement but, as one of the kids pointed out, it's at least one degree we don't yet have in our family.

Hundreds turn out for Kaiserslautern Special Olympics

Check us out on Facebook!

By Rick Scavetta, U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern

KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany – Crowds of spectators cheered as MeeHee Ashe and fellow Special Olympics athletes sprinted down the 50-meter track during the annual games held in Enkenbach-Alsenborn.

For those 22 seconds, as she ran under sunny skies beside German and American athletes, Ashe, 27, felt happy, she said. Over the past few weeks, she has been training and preparing herself for the May 5 event – as she has done for more than two decades.

“I like to run,” Ashe said. “I forget about some things and just do it.”

The spring games, sponsored by U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern, included tennis, track & field, badminton, soccer, basketball and volleyball. They have been held in Kaiserslautern Military Community for 28 years – the past 14 years at the German police academy, whose officers also supported the event. In all, more than 800 German and American athletes took part. They were supported by roughly 1,300 volunteers.

Lorelai Browning, 17, a Vilseck High School student carried the Olympic torch into the arena. Her parents, Sgt. 1st Class Henry Browning and his wife Lorenna, watched with pride.

“It’s such an honor for her.” Lorenna Browning said. “We’re so excited.”

Everyone who took part is a winner, said Lt. Col Kevin Hutchison, commander of U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern, during his opening remarks.

“These games are intended to help the athletes gain confidence and build a positive self-image that carries over into the classroom, home, job and community,” Hutchison said. “It also fosters friendships between volunteers and athletes and provides a forum for better understanding of adults and children with intellectual disabilities.”

Nearby, Spc. Brad Abraham, 20, of Turlock, Calif., handed 10-year-old Aaron Evans a bottle of water as the Ramstein Intermediate School student prepared for his sprint. Abraham was among hundreds of Kaiserslautern Soldiers and Airmen who volunteered to support the event.

“In the Army, helping people is part of what we do,” Abraham said. “It’s fun, when you get into it.”

Evans darted down the dusty track, flanked by other children who laughed and smiled as they crossed the finish line. Afterward, Abraham pinned a yellow ribbon to Evans’s blue Special Olympics t-shirt.

“I enjoy seeing kids enjoying this,” Abraham said. “If they’re having fun, then we’re having fun.”

The event marked the second year volunteering for Senior Airman James Carlisle, 29, and engineering assistant from Pascagoula, Miss., who serves with the 86th Civil Engineering Squadron at Ramstein Air Base. He served as a buddy for Dominik Keller, a seven-year-old Kaiserslautern athlete. Carlisle noticed that Keller and other young athletes were not so interested in “hearing all the talk in the beginning,” he said.

“They knew what they wanted when they got here. The first thing out of their mouth was ‘Fussball’ – they wanted to play soccer,” Carlisle said. “They look forward to this all year. It’s really exciting.”

Kids got plastic firefighters’ hats and clambered into U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern fire trucks on display. Nearby, participants made arts and crafts projects and hitched rides on a mini-train.

Garrison volunteers sweated over huge grills, barbequing hundreds of hot dogs and hamburgers.

The final sporting event was a friendly soccer match between German and American athletes. Germany won, 8-0. Then, crowds applauded as Command Sgt. Maj. Richard Jessup led fellow senior enlisted leaders from Kaiserslautern’s Army and Air Force units in the presentation of medallions to athletes.

Ashe climbed the pedestal and slightly bowed to receive her medal, to the cheers of her parents, Charlie and Nelda, plus hundreds of other people crowding the grandstands. Afterward, athletes, volunteers and spectators joined hands in a huge circle and sang “We Are The World.”

“It feels happy inside,” Ashe said. “It’s about winning and it’s not about losing. It’s about having fun.”

It's not often one puts on a full display in reasonable light and stays still enough for me to get a decent shot. My lucky day.

Those were the days - Kos in 1979

Those last steps to the Mont Blanc peak!

Yes, those are teeth!

The Common Screwpine (Pandanus utilis) is a tropical tree native to Madagascar. Contrary to its name, it is NOT a pine and doesn't even look like a pine. It is sometimes called a Madagascar Screw-Pine. Interestingly, like corn plants, it has prop roots to hold it up. They become woody and gnarly and strong enough to face up to tropical winds! Believe it or not, Albert is holding onto and standing among some very tall prop roots beside Pandanus Lake at Fairchild Garden!

Notice the long leaves with sharply serrated edges and the ridged, twisting trunks. And where's there fruiting plants, there's always animals!

The raccoon, Procyon lotor, also known as the common raccoon, North American raccoon, northern raccoon and colloquially as coon, is a medium-sized mammal native to North America. It is the largest of the procyonid family, having a body length of 40 to 70 cm (16 to 28 in) and a body weight of 3.5 to 9 kg (8 to 20 lb). The raccoon is usually nocturnal and is omnivorous, with a diet consisting of about 40% invertebrates, 33% plant foods, and 27% vertebrates. It has a grayish coat, of which almost 90% is dense underfur, which insulates against cold weather. Two of its most distinctive features are its extremely dexterous front paws and its facial mask, which are themes in the mythology of several Native American tribes. Raccoons are noted for their intelligence, with studies showing that they are able to remember the solution to tasks up to three years later.

Though previously thought to be solitary, there is now evidence that raccoons engage in gender-specific social behavior. Related females often share a common area, while unrelated males live together in groups of up to four animals to maintain their positions against foreign males during the mating season, and other potential invaders. After a gestation period of about 65 days, two to five young (known as a "kit", plural "kits") are born in spring. The kits are subsequently raised by their mother until dispersion in late fall. Although captive raccoons have been known to live over 20 years, their average life expectancy in the wild is only 1.8 to 3.1 years. In many areas hunting and traffic accidents are the two most common causes of death.

Today I have a story in the local paper about the biggest AC/DC fan in the county. He has a huge collection of merchandise, including two official guitars and one he had custom built to look exactly like Angus Young's most famous guitar.

I love people who commit and go all the way!

For the farmer working this land, his sheep were his most important asset. As the fire came up the valley, the Mittagong Rural Fire Service crew were ordered to protect these sheep and more which were rounded up from a neighbouring paddock also under threat.

This fire was in the Wyangala Dam area north of Crookwell, New South Wales, Australia

One of the salty pools of Isabella

Isabella

Shaped like a sea horse, Isabela is the largest of the the islands in the Galapagos, more than 4 times larger than Santa Cruz the next largest. Isabela is 80 miles (100 km) in length and though it is remarkably beautiful it is not one of the most visited islands in the chain. Its visitor sites are far apart making them accessible only to faster boats or those with longer itineraries. One of the youngest islands, Isabela is located on the western edge of the archipelago near the Galapagos hot spot. At approximately 1 million years old, the island was formed by the merger of 6 shield volcanoes - Alcedo, Cerro Azul, Darwin, Ecuador, Sierra Negra and Wolf. Five of the six volcanoes are still active (the exception is Ecuador) making it one of the most volcanically active places on earth. Visitors cruising past Elizabeth Bay on the west coast can see evidence of this activity in the fumaroles rising from Volcan Chico on Sierra Negra. Two of Isabela's volcanoes lie directly on the equator - Ecuador and Volcan Wolf. Volcan Wolf is the youngest of Isabela's volcanoes and at 5,600ft (1707 m) the highest point in the Galapagos. Isabela is known for its geology, providing visitors with excellent examples of the geologic occurrences that have created the Galapagos Islands including uplifts at Urbina Bay and the Bolivar Channel, Tuft cones at Tagus Cove, and Pulmace on Alcedo. Isabela is also interesting for its flora and fauna. The young island does not follow the vegetation zones of the other islands. The relatively new lava fields and surrounding soils have not developed the sufficient nutrients required to support the varied life zones found on other islands. Another obvious difference occurs on Volcan Wolf and Cerro Azul, these volcanoes loft above the cloud cover and are arid on top. Isabela's rich animal, bird, and marine life is beyond compare. Isabela is home to more wild tortoises than all the other islands. Isabela's large size and notable topography created barriers for the slow moving tortoises; apparently the creatures were unable to cross lava flows and other obstacles, causing several different sub-species of tortoise to develop. Today tortoises roam free in the calderas of Alcedo, Wolf, Cerro Azul, Darwin and Sierra Negra. Alcedo Tortoises spend most of their life wallowing in the mud at the volcano crater. The mud offers moisture, insulation and protects their exposed flesh from mosquitoes, ticks and other insects. The giant tortoises have a mediocre heat control system requiring them to seek the coolness of the mud during the heat of the day and the extra insulation during the cool of the night. On the west coast of Isabela the nutrient rich Cromwell Current upwelling creating a feeding ground for fish, whales, dolphin and birds. These waters have long been known as the best place to see whales in the Galapagos. Some 16 species of whales have been identified in the area including humpbacks, sperms, sei, minkes and orcas. During the 19th century whalers hunted in these waters until the giant creatures were near extinction. The steep cliffs of Tagus Cove bare the names of many of the whaling ships and whalers which hunted in these waters. Birders will be delighted with the offerings of Isabela. Galapagos Penguins and flightless cormorants also feed from the Cromwell Current upwelling. These endemic birds nest along the coast of Isabela and neighboring Fernandina. The mangrove finch, Galapagos Hawk, brown pelican, pink flamingo and blue heron are among the birds who make their home on Isabela. A colorful part to any tour located on the western shore of Isabela, Punta Moreno is often the first or last stopping point on the island (depending on the direction the boat is heading). Punta Moreno is a place where the forces of the Galapagos have joined to create a work of art. The tour starts with a panga ride along the beautiful rocky shores where Galapagos penguins and shore birds are frequently seen. After a dry landing the path traverses through jagged black lava rock. As the swirling black lava flow gave way to form craters, crystal tide pools formed-some surrounded by mangroves. This is a magnet for small blue lagoons, pink flamingos, blue herons, and Bahama pintail ducks. Brown pelican can be seen nesting in the green leaves of the mangroves. You can walk to the edge of the lava to look straight down on these pools including the occasional green sea turtle, white-tipped shark and puffer fish. This idyllic setting has suffered from the presence of introduced species. Feral dogs in the area are known to attack sea Lions and marine iguanas.

Galapagos Islands

The Galápagos Islands (official name: Archipiélago de Colón; other Spanish names: Islas de Colón or Islas Galápagos) are an archipelago of volcanic islands distributed around the equator in the Pacific Ocean, some 900 km west of Ecuador. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site: wildlife is its most notable feature. Because of the only very recent arrival of man the majority of the wildlife has no fear of humans and will allow visitors to walk right up them, often having to step over Iguanas or Sea Lions. The Galápagos islands and its surrounding waters are part of a province, a national park, and a biological marine reserve. The principal language on the islands is Spanish. The islands have a population of around 40,000, which is a 40-fold expansion in 50 years. The islands are geologically young and famed for their vast number of endemic species, which were studied by Charles Darwin during the voyage of the Beagle. His observations and collections contributed to the inception of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection.

Those overcast days at the beach are always some of my favorite days. It makes for the best light a photographer could hope for in terms of this kind of work. Plus as I always point out, you generally have the beach to yourself. I actually travel to the coast a significant amount less during the summer than I do the other months of the year, for these reasons. Although I like a sunny day or two at the beach myself. ;-)

These are the rocks which the cliffs of Cape Kiwanda are made of. If I was more of a geologist (I took a class once in school, not exactly resume material) I could tell you a lot more about these rocks. I know they are sedimentary and orange. I also know they take on a whole new importance during magic hour when the warm light of the sinking sun lights them up in an almost heart-stopping fashion.

One of these days when life gives me the time (ha!) I wouldn't mind touching up on my geology, at least as it pertains to this region. I am one of those people, for whom it is not sufficient just to notice what I am standing on and seeing interesting picture in it. I want to know the how, what and whys of it as well. That deeper understanding always makes me feel a bit more connected to the places I go and am in.

I don't know if it is still done, but in the early 1980s the windows of Amtrak's Southwest Limited were washed during the service stop at Albuquerque. I believe this was a Santa Fe tradition. The photograph was actually taken on November 1, but Flickr sometimes can't get dates correct. (Scanned from a slide)
