A pre sunrise image taken at Avebury stone circle in Wiltshire. For those that don't know Avebury is the largest circle of standing stones in Europe, far larger than its illustrious neighbour 'stonehenge' just 17 miles away. There are 3 circles standing within a large earth embankment which stands some 20m high in places.
This image was taken 30 minutes before sunrise and relies on ambient light and light reflected from the swilling mists to provide the necessary illumination. I used a wide angle lens in portrait format to include the full 2.50m high stone on the right of the image to give the image a sense of scale. It also masks the road which is just a few feet to the right and stops the eye from wandering out of the right side of the image.
The rather plain old house of Airdrie stands 3 miles west of Crail, a couple of miles inland from the Fife coast.
Those readers that follow the photos I post here on Flickr may be wondering if this is an impostor, as my 'special subject' is Scottish castles, in particular, tower-houses & fortified houses. This would appear to be a house built after 1700, after which date, defence was no longer a consideration, but appearances can be deceiving, particularly when that appearance has changed so much over time. Airdrie was built as a fortified house, some evidence of which can be seen by zooming in to the right side of the central tower, where there is a small stair-turret which is pierced by two gun-loops and there were no doubt others, now hidden under the harling.
On the same (east) side of the central tower (but barely visible here), there is an ornate window, an unexpected sight on such an otherwise plain building, above which there is an empty panel space, its border carved with men and animals. On top of the panel space frame there is another small window, flanked by triangular pedestals carved with the date 1588 and supporting human heads (stone ones, not real ones).
It was almost 23:00. We were on the way back to the cabin, while passing through this little village that we had been almost everyday during the trip. This was the only time that there was moonlight shining in the sky. Those little red cabins lies next to the ocean in this peaceful night, as if narrating their old stories.
Happy new year all, only had a couple of bottles of brown to celebrate last night so got up early to try and catch sunrise. It wasn't much of a show but I just caught the wheels as the tide was going out.
Up skirt, panties, stocking tops, on those stairs again. Not recent, but not terribly old either. (Two more of this set further back)

My first real brush with the railway probably came about in 1975, off to town with Gran, on board a pair of Old Oak's finest Brush 2's replete with around 7 of the Western's motley mk2's, next stop New Street.
I well remember the rhythmic sound of those 12SVT's as they (er, slowly!) got into their stride...
Fast forward to 1980, maybe 1981, and as well as the trains, I'm discovering the delights of rock music. I have a recollection of some top heavy psychologist type popping up establishing a link between the rhythmic thumping of a chunky diesel engine and the equally rhythmic but entirely different sound of AC/DC thrashing out Back in Black.
It was probably complete bullshit mumbo-jumbo, but at the time, life suddenly made sense, although it's probably for the best that the part Aussie, part Geordie rockers didn't use the sound of a 37 rasping up to County March summit as the basis for their then forthcoming 'For Those About To Rock...' album.
Then again...
Anyhows, standing in the Mojave Desert, listening to this GE trio shattering the peace as they slowly lifted their long manifest upgrade kinda reminded me of those early days.
Maybe, after all, that top heavy psychologist type was onto something. 40 plus years on, I'm still listening to chunky diesels doing what they do best. And amongst this year's gig list is a Metallica double in London in July, a dirty long weekend at Download Festival and a performance from the ever enigmatic Deftones a mere 10 days after I get home from this little California shindig.
Some people never change.
Ash Hill CA, 16 January 2026.
Oh, and a honourable mention for Blyth Power, Geordie metalheads and type 5 aficionados! Yeah...
Those boots are not water proof. My feet got wet.
As did my remote when I dropped it in the puddle...
THANK FUCK IT'S FRIDAY!!!!!
Have a great weekend y'all! :D
Fish are so calm in their own little world. Just seeing them swim around amazes me and brings a special feeling. This was taken at Blå Planet in Copenhagen.
On the Mt Olympus of automotive gods, no names are more revered than those of Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz.
On January 29, 1886 Benz submitted a Patent application for his “vehicle with gas operation” to the Imperial Patent Office giving it what the company today, calls the birth certificate of the first automobile and the name Benz Patent Motorwagen.
Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach developed their one cylinder, “Grandfather Clock” engine in 1884. They install it in the 1885 Daimler Reitwagen or Riding Car. On August 28, 1885 Daimler is awarded the Patent for “vehicle with gas or petroleum drive machine”. We would say, the world’s first motorcycle.
It looks more like something from Leonardo DaVinci’s workshop in the 15th or 16th century than a product of the industrial revolution of the 19th century.
Just a few months after Benz patents his Motorwagen, Daimler installs a 1.1 hp version of his grandfather clock engine into a 4 seat coach to create the first gas powered car with four wheels to reach 10 MPH.
It is not until 1926 that the two companies merge to form Daimler-Benz AG. It is also in 1926 that the 3 pointed star emblem first appears.
Both models are 1/8 scale and made by Franklin Mint.
Now, we suspect there are a few of you saying, “Wait one minute there. What are you guys trying to pull? Isn’t this the same script from a couple of weeks ago?”
Not quite, this photo is in color so you can appreciate more of the wonderful details these models have to offer. You may notice, there is no foreground tree shadow either, making your viewing just a little easier as well.
We also saved one juicy factoid for this post. Did you notice? Did you know? The Benz Patent Motorwagen was also the first car with rack and pinion steering. Look closely and you can see the toothed rack attached to the front wheel. The steering pillar has a pinion gear at the base, completing the connection between the steering lever and wheel.
Those of you that have watched American white pelicans preen, know this as part of their routine. I suppose it feels good and gets those last scraps of grass carp out of their pouches. Anyway, this is nearing the end of preening, but the look in his eye and his pose was open for interpretation.
Got a few friends who do NOT like clowns and I made specially for the people who find clowns creepy like hell this fancy guy. Hopefully his jokes are better then his looks!
for those who don't know yet, aside from photography, i love cooking. looking at these fesh produce at a street stall in venice was just such eye candy for me. i just grazed my eyes on tons of veggies that we don't grow in the tropics. i see fennel here and there in some supermarkets, but they can cost up to 6 USD a piece for a small root! i loved the freshness of everything that i wanted to snatch them all and make some rockin' rattatouille!
With this master painter of a sky, I can't even decide whether I prefer it with or without clouds - in any case, it never fails to delight.
While I started my little Series with those „Shark Faces“ I want to end it with some less dangerous ones. Those „whales“ were mostly used to transport people and goods. Well those could be something for development aid but also ammunition… but those non armed aircraft were a little more sympathetic to me ;)
I thought it might be time to throw in some colour, but I always get quite anxious about it! Still, I've got a good shadow to keep me company and help me feel at home...
And for those who don't get into these things, turn away now as there will be no more here about this here shot, but rather I am accepting Nina's www.flickr.com/photos/21560098@N06 challenge to keep talking about myself. I have to admit, it kinda makes me feel a bit of a dick, but I'm sure I'm just being silly. Hopefully.
1. Needless to say after that, but I can get quite anxious over how people will take my meaning, if you take my meaning. Now, this is only the case if I like or respect you. If I don't know you, don't like you or think you're a dead shit, then who gives a brass razoo what you think, but if I like you etc, then I worry about shitting you off. But usually I'm quite good at turning the worry off, or at last ignoring it!!
2. In repose I can look really stern, but at the same time I smile so much that the crows feet on either side of my eyes have been mini valleys since I was in my late teens!
3. I love a good midnight boogie in the back garden with my ipod.
4. Half my family are musicians, as are a large number of my friends, but I've never had the patience or courage to learn anything. But I've started to realise I can sing a bit. That's fun, although I've yet to subject anyone to it much!
5. I worked in bookshops for about 8 years and have always had a real thing for books. I have over 5000 of the buggers and they cover every available (spare) surface in our living room. As well as the five bookcases and the picture rail running around the room. Although I haven't read many books this past year and a half as my reading has been almost entirely online and related to various projects and work, books have been my salvation, temptation, inspiration and balm for many years and I'm sure they will continue to be so.

"People who buy the Vantage will do so in the first place for its performance, and they will not be disappointed. The figures speak for themselves. But they should take extra heart because it is one of the easiest true high performance cars to drive well: and it has been given brakes to match. In comfort too, it has much to offer, and there is a great deal of what is best in the British tradition of designing and building sports cars in its making." - Autocar.
The performance figures Autocar referred to were a 0-60mph time of 5.4 seconds and an estimated top speed of 170mph, figures comparable with those achievable by a Ferrari Daytona or Lamborghini Miura.
With the introduction of the Vantage in 1977, Aston Martin's V8 was thrust back into the supercar league. Its superior performance aside, the Vantage was readily distinguishable from the standard product by virtue of its blocked-off bonnet scoop, blanked air intake, front chin spoiler and lip on the boot lid.
ZF five-speed manual transmission was standard equipment, though a handful of Vantages were built with the Torqueflite automatic gearbox. With either transmission performance was shattering, the Vantage's 0-100mph time of 12.7 seconds making it the world's fastest accelerating production car at that time. For those with a yen for even greater performance, there was the factory's optional 'X-Pack' engine (like this example's) which, depending on the state of tune, had up to 432bhp available.
As the Vantage's mechanical specification progressed so did the coachwork, with wheel arches flaring to accommodate wider rims, increasing the overall width by 2", and 16"-diameter wheels being introduced. Unlike the V8 saloon, which reverted to fuel injection in 1986, the V8 Vantage kept its 48IDF Weber carburettors to the end of production in December 1989, by which time 361 cars had been built.
Copy documents on file reveal that this particular Vantage was built to West German specification and delivered via Merz & Pabst. The car was finished in Salisbury Blue with grey leather interior; unusually, the specified dark blue piping was applied to the front seats and armrests only, the rest of the piping being grey. Other 'extras' consisted of dash top roll and steering wheel in dark blue, rear valance in body colour and a Blaupunkt Bremen radio cassette player. The Vantage subsequently moved to the UK where it was first registered on 1st August 1998 as 'E149 BKM'.
The current vendor purchased the Aston from The Old Racing Car Company of Richmond-on-Thames, UK on 28th June 2008, since when it has been kept in storage. Re-commissioning will be required before the car returns to the road.

All those clouds behind the trees? Steam rising from the lake on a sub-zero day. Edited per Michael Linden's suggestion, below. Thanks, Michael!
Havent been posting much and have been posting portraits almost exclusively. I wanted to post something else for a change, but I couldn't let this one go. :) Hope you all like this one. :)
He lived in Tai O for his whole life and he's a great guy. I walked out from this store and he started to talk to me about this place. Then, he became my free tour guide. He kept talking, but it was hard to understand. So, I just followed him around. He gave me this card, so that when I go back, I can find him again.

.....and I'll repeat what I said in my last kitten post:
Sooner or later my wife and I will be fostering kittens and cats again from our local animal rescue league. I probably won't be posting too many pictures of them here unless they turn out great but I do have another flickr account that I have opened which will be all kitties all of the time. =0)
If you'd like to become a contact please let me know here: Whiskers On Kittens When we start getting them I will add you all back as contacts as well.
I went out onto Whixall Moss to see if I could get some better photos of the Hobbies (Falco subbuteo) after Dragonflies. I saw a few about but all too far away. However, as I sat waiting for a Hobby to come a bit closer this Reed Bunting (Emberiza schoeniclus) decided to demonstrate to me that it wasn't just Hobbies who caught Dragonflies. It caught this impressively large Common Hawker (Aeshna juncea) and posed with it near to where I sat.
