Physalis peruviana
As a member of the plant family Solanaceae, it is related to a large number of edible plants, including tomato, eggplant and potato, and other members of the nightshades. It is closely related to the tomatillo but not to the cherry, Ribes gooseberry, Indian gooseberry or Chinese gooseberry, as its various names might suggest.
Medical research, folk medicine and potential health value
Scientific studies of the cape gooseberry show its constituents, possibly polyphenols and/or carotenoids, demonstrate anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
The crude extract of the fruit bearing plant, has demonstrated anti-hepatoma and anti-inflammatory activities.
Antioxidant
Antidiabetes and antihypertension in vitro?
Some "withanolides" isolated from the plant have shown anti-cancer activity. The unusual 5-chloride withanolide, 9, displayed significant cytotoxic activity.
Antihepatotoxic (in rats)
Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) has been found in the plant. Evidence, mainly from animal models, suggests that melatonin administration may help to prevent or cure diseases associated with oxidative stress, including neurodegenerative diseases, which frequently occur during aging.
In folk medicine, Physalis peruviana has been used as a medicinal herb for cancer, leukemia, malaria, asthma, hepatitis, dermatitis and rheumatism. None of these diseases, however, is yet confirmed in human clinical in vivo studies as treatable by the cape gooseberry.
The photography club I belong to has an upcoming competition themed 'Textures'. This is the first time that I am attempting this subject. I hope the result is good.

Runoff flowing at the bottom of one of the mounds left this interesting pattern of colors and textures on the clayey mini-fan that surrounds it. A nice study in textures and patterns.

A photo I took from the airplane flying over Spain. Trying to catch textures from nature to give them shape of abstract and free interpretation.

Day 10. Today is the 10th of January, and it was a good day. I spent most of my morning just relaxing, and then I invited a friend over; we talked for a while, went out, walked and just had a good time. It has been a while since we talked frequently, so lately we’ve been spending more time together. It’s brought on a nice feeling of nostalgia, a somewhat bitter-sweet memory of times that are now long gone. At the same time, I’m glad to know that even though we’ve known each other for years and we are have changed so much, things are kind of… just the same. There’s just some people in your life, some very specific people that make you feel like time is an illusion. Friends, family, it doesn’t matter. The special quality they possess is a connection that dissolves time, that makes a year ago feel like just minutes, a feeling of trust and understanding that makes you just about certain that you can talk about anything.
It’s only right that we did today’s photo together. He loves abstract shapes and textures, so we made the photo using a Pine Cone that I had picked up in a forest in Envigado about a year ago. It’s quite amazing how getting so close to objects can distort them until they become completely unrecognisable, almost alien. My first thought when developed the photo was that it looked like a Triceratops; I’m not so sure about that any more, but I still like it.
Let’s see what tomorrow brings :)
