courage means different things to different people. and its meaning can change with the situation. yet i think courage, too often, is associated with strength and armor. to me, courage means letting down my guard; being vulnerable and true; staying open to whatever arises. courage isn't about fighting; it’s about surrendering in a brave way—showing up with an open heart; cultivating compassion; sharing the raw places; letting love in.
tomorrow, mark and i leave for iowa. six days after my mom’s death, we celebrate her life within the framework of a funeral. part of my healing is to speak at her service—to speak from my unguarded heart.

These past few days have felt like summer with warm temperatures, sunny skies and trees turning that wonderful lime green with new leaves. So I have been distracted from Flickr by doing the things I love to do in the summer. My garden is looking so great. I worked on an art project for my garden as well as tidied up the weeds. I have enjoyed watching all the beautiful birds visit my backyard and a few of them build nests. We have meals on our back deck which feels like camping. We hike long urban hikes which includes our local park. Then last night we camped out all night in our backyard.
The Trilliums are out and I said I wouldn't take any more Trillium pictures because I have so many good ones in my files. However, there was the odd one posed so nicely that it caught my attention. This one had such a gentle Purple/red color compared to the others in its group that I honored it with a portrait. It also made me stop to realize that I normally would take this pictures on the Bruce Trail. With that trail being closed right now I was glad to see the blooms in our own park nearby.
I also realized that it was the simple pleasures of outdoor experiences I love so much and it didn't really matter where these things happened. It can be in our own backyard. The things we see every year can be beautiful each time you see them again if you use fresh eyes.
Well, this does it. I have now officially depleted my shots from my wonderful morning shooting on Institute Road here in Ohio.
It's back to Texas for us in the morning.

Textures In Mono, another shot from Parton near Whitehaven, Cumbria. I am experimenting with my mono side, trying to see how much detail i can bring out in the images.
With the amount of single men you see hanging about the place with a fishing rod by their sides and pretending to fish, one has to ask if the only reason they are there, is to get away from their partners?

This was taken at Picacho Peak State Park in Arizona. My friend, BillyZ and I went out with a strobe, soft box and a reflector one afternoon to exploit nature stuff. This is the skeleton of a saguaro cactus that was decaying slowly in the Arizona desert.
Lighting stuff: Lit with a Yongnuo 560-III in an 8.6 inch Lastolite soft box from camera left at 10 o'clock to create the side lighting that reveals shapes and textures. The flash, in manual mode, was triggered by a Yongnuo RF-603N. Fill light came from a reflector on the right side.

Sunset
From Amsterdam towards Hongkong via Northern corridor to avoid dangerous zones in Ukraine, Middle East and North Africa. We flew via Moscow as the most logical choice.
Taken with a Samsung mobile as I was not allowed to bring my back-up batteries in my hand luggage for security reason. Make sure you check this with the airlines.
They're all around us, textures, those lines and patterns, seemingly purposeful, sometimes random.
Look closely in nature and you'll find them everywhere, they draw you in, sometimes they are impossibly perpendicular. Here is an example of textures that at a cursory glance make no sense, how could this monolith possibly form naturally with lines that are virtually opposite those a mere few feet below them. Bry will give you the precise explanation, it'll blow your mind, time scales and natural evolution of the landscape which one can barely comprehend. Nature is awesome.
10 exposures went into this image, 4 for the sky and 6 for the foreground, shot with an h-alpha modified Nikon Z6 and Tamron 35mm f1.4 on a Sky Watcher Star Adventurer tracking mount. Foreground exposures are 2 minutes at f2 and ISO 1600, sky exposures are 2 minutes at f2 and ISO 800.
