Year of the Dog
Along with many Asians throughout the world, Melody considers Chinese New Year the most important holiday of the year.
Born of Chinese immigrant parents, Melody remembers from early childhood the preparation and festivities, the paying off of debts, the visiting and celebrating among relatives and friends, red envelopes with monetary gifts for children, newlyweds, and other special occasions.
Though customarily given mostly to kids from parents and grandparents, we are sending our envelopes to children of friends and relatives and to you – red being the symbol of Good Luck and to ward off evil spirits.

A postcard postmarked in Belleville on Feb. 28, 1910 and addressed to Mrs. Harry Brenton in Corbyville.
Text reads: "Dear Floss. Say tell Harry the first time he comes down to bring us some potatoes. We are all welll. hope to find you the same.

The information on the back of this postcard describes the three mules and the 3-wheeled cart. The sign at the park entrance offered advice about driving in the park. DRIVE SLOW AND SEE THE PARK. DRIVE FAST AND SEE THE JAIL.

Acknowledgement of Deeds by Commissioners of the Common Pleas of Mary Watson the wife of John Watson. The Property was located at Chapel Haddlesey, Birton, Yorkshire. Also Mentioned Thomas Holmes, Richard Prince, Benjamin Bean, Jane Holmes, Richard Holmes, Charles Pocklington?, dated 23rd August 1881.
The two Commissioners were Thomas Motley Wedall, Selby, Yorkshire and Charles Newstead, Selby, Yorkshire, Attorney’s and Commissioners.
Sometimes known as Married Women’s Deeds or Acknowledgement of Deeds by Married Women. A Document to record that a Wife was of full age, competent to understand, had been examined apart from her husband and voluntarily consented to the sale of Land and Property. The main intention was to ensure that a wife could not claim the right of Dower from the purchaser after her husband’s death. Single women and Widows had the right to own properties in their own right so were not covered by this 1833 Act.
The Declaration: Sometimes this first declaration could be signed by someone other than an Attorney and Commissioner (Gentleman, Farmer etc) who knew the woman. Normally it was signed by an Attorney who was a Commissioner of the Court of Common pleas. Then signed by a second Commissioner who declared he had no knowledge or interest in the transaction and as far as he was aware neither did the first Commissioner. Sometimes the document would also be signed by another Commissioner (for Oaths) or by a Judge in his Chambers.
A second document, the Certificate, gave the names of the two Commissioners, wife and husband. A précis of the Indenture connected to the sale was given, naming all who were named in the indenture.
