For Brighton Digital Festival 2014, Fabrica once again ran The Testbed. Artist Lucy Steggals was selected and created a piece called Mr Snake. This aircraft was the second Convair 340 (CV-340) ever built. It was delivered to United Air Lines (UAL) as N73102, one of many wearing the name "Mainliner Convair" on September 2, 1952. Frontier Airlines would then be the next operator of the aircraft (same registration) in August 1966. After Frontier, the airplane would be purchased by Gem State Airlines and re-registered as N116GS in May 1979. Gem State as then renamed Golden Gate Airlines in 1980. In February 1984, Aspen Airways would buy the aircraft and re-register it as N113AP. Then in March 1991, Aspen Airways sold the aircraft to Renown Aviation, Renown then soon selling it to Allied Signal in January 1992. Allied Signal registered the aircraft as N580AS and equipped it as a flying testbed. Allied Signal and Honeywell merged in 1999, the aircraft now wears Honeywell titles and is registered as N580HW.

The F-101 Voodoo was originally built as an escort fighter for USAF strategic bombers. Unfortunately for the Voodoo, the jet bombers coming on the line for the USAF--the B-47, B-52, and B-58--didn't require escorts. The F-101 was a good aircraft without a mission. The USAF began building the F-101A as a low-level strike fighter, because if there was one thing the Voodoo had, it was high speed at all altitudes. This led the USAF to consider: would the F-101 make a good tactical reconnaissance aircraft?

 

In response, McDonnell rebuilt two of the YF-101A prototypes as RF-101A testbeds. This replaced the fighter nose with a more "chisel" design that contained six cameras instead of radar and cannon. The RF-101A turned out to be a superb reconnaissance aircraft, and entered production on a limited basis. Further variants were developed from later Voodoo versions, namely the purpose-built RF-101C, which entered service in 1958.

 

The RF-101 gave the USAF its first supersonic reconnaissance aircraft, and largely replaced the RF-84F Thunderflash and RT-33A Shooting Star. Pilots liked its speed and responsiveness; it was capable of genuine aerobatics in the hands of a good pilot. RF-101s would first be used by the Republic of China Air Force (Taiwan), either flown by ROCAF or CIA pilots, over the Chinese mainland; the USAF's first combat usage would be the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. The RF-101's dash speed was such that it was tough to intercept, though not impossible.

 

This was found to be true over Vietnam as well, where the RF-101 was the backbone of USAF tactical reconnaissance until the later years of the war. The Voodoo's speed at altitude made it impervious to flak, and even the MiG-21 could not keep up with it. However, the RF-101s often had to get down low to "get the pictures," and that meant that barrage flak could bring down Voodoos. SAMs were also a threat at higher altitudes. After losses began to mount, the RF-101s were camouflaged, which helped some, but also slightly lowered their top speed. 39 RF-101s were lost over Vietnam.

 

With the age of the aircraft beginning to tell, the Voodoo was gradually relegated to second-line units, replaced by the RF-4C Phantom II. Some soldiered on in Air National Guard units, but all the RF-101s were gone by 1979. A handful remain in museums.

 

56-0112 is displayed on the north side to the entrance to the tiny Gila Bend Airport, across the street from 56-0130. Calling the aircraft "brothers" would not be inaccurate: they have exactly the same history, flying with the same units throughout their USAF career. Like 56-0130, 56-0112 started with the 66th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing at RAF Upper Heyford, UK in 1965, before being transferred to the 363rd TRW at Shaw AFB, South Carolina in 1970, followed by a final and brief stint with the 188th TRG (Arkansas ANG) at Fort Smith before final retirement later that year. Both RF-101s were sent to MASDC for storage in 1976, and both were donated to the town of Gila Bend, Arizona soon thereafter. (As mentioned with 56-0130, why Gila Bend got two RF-101Cs is unknown, as to the best of my knowledge, the small USAF auxiliary field south of town never flew them.)

 

Both RF-101s are in decent condition--if their markings have faded over the years and they lack engines, they still retain their Southeast Asia camouflage, preserved by the Arizona dry heat (which was in effect the day I took the picture in June 2020--it was registering 106 degrees). Both aircraft can easily be seen from Arizona Highway 85.

Towards the end of the Korean War, the USAF came to the realization that their transport fleet was becoming obsolete. The C-46 Commandos and C-47 Skytrains in service were no longer adequate, while the C-119 Flying Boxcar was having difficulties. In 1951, the USAF issued a requirement for a new tactical transport, an aircraft that would need to carry at least 72 passengers, be capable of dropping paratroopers, and have a ramp for loading vehicles directly into the cargo compartment. Moreover, it must be a “clean sheet” design, not a conversion from an existing airliner, and the USAF preferred it be a turboprop design. Five companies submitted designs, and six months later the USAF chose Lockheed’s L-402 design—over the misgivings of Lockheed’s chief designer, Clarence “Kelly” Johnson, who warned that the L-402 would destroy the company. Little was Johnson to know that, fifty years later, the L-402—designated C-130 Hercules by the USAF—would still be in production, and one out of only five aircraft to have over 50 years of service with the original purchaser.

 

The C-130 was designed to give mostly unfettered access to a large cargo compartment—the ramp forms an integral part of the rear fuselage, the wing is mounted above the fuselage, and the landing gear is carried in sponsons attached to the fuselage itself, while the fuselage has a circular design to maximize loading potential. The high wing also gives the C-130 good lift, especially in “high and hot” situations. The Allison T56 turboprop was designed specifically for the Hercules, and has gone on to become one of the most successful turboprop designs in history.

 

After two YC-130 prototypes, the Hercules went into production as the C-130A in 1956, to be superseded by the improved C-130B in 1959. The latter became the baseline Hercules variant: C-130As had three-blade propellers and a rounded “Roman” nose, while the B introduced the more familiar, longer radar nose and four-blade propellers. (Virtually all A models were later retrofitted to the long nose, though they kept the three-blade propellers.) In the 50 years hence, the basic C-130 design has not changed much: the C-130E introduced underwing external fuel tanks, while the C-130H has a slightly different wing. Even the new C-130J variant only introduced new engines with more fuel efficient six-bladed propellers: the basic design remains the same. Lockheed also offers stretched versions of the Hercules, initially as a civilian-only option (the L-100-30); the British Royal Air Force bought this version as the C-130K and it was later adopted by other nations, including the United States.

 

The basic C-130 is strictly a transport aircraft, but the versatility of the aircraft has meant it has been modified into a dizzying number of variants. These include the AC-130 Spectre gunship, the HC-130 rescue aircraft and WC-130 weather reconnaissance version. Other versions include several dozen EC-130 electronic warfare/Elint variants, KC-130 tankers, and DC-130 drone aircraft controllers. The USAF, the US Navy, and the US Marine Corps are all C-130 operators as well. Besides the United States, there are 67 other operators of C-130s, making it one of the world’s most prolific aircraft, with its only rivals the Bell UH-1 Iroquois family and the Antonov An-2 Colt biplane transport. C-130s are also used extensively by civilian operators as well as the L-100 series.

 

The “Herky Bird,” as it is often nicknamed, has participated in every military campaign fought by the United States since 1960 in one variation or the other. During Vietnam, it was used in almost every role imaginable, from standard transport to emergency bomber: as the latter, it dropped M121 10,000 pound mass-focus bombs to clear jungle away for helicopter landing zones, and it was even attempted to use C-130s with these bombs against the infamous Thanh Hoa Bridge in North Vietnam. (Later this capability was added as standard to MC-130 Combat Talon special forces support aircraft; the MC-130 is the only aircraft cleared to carry the GBU-43 MOAB.) It was also instrumental in resupplying the Khe Sanh garrison during its three-month siege. Hercules crews paid the price as well: nearly 70 C-130s were lost during the Vietnam War. In foreign service, C-130s have also been used heavily, the most famous instance of which was likely the Israeli Entebbe Raid of 1976, one of the longest-ranged C-130 missions in history. C-130s are often in the forefront of humanitarian missions to trouble spots around the world, most recently in the 2011 Sendai earthquake disaster in Japan.

 

As of this writing, over 2300 C-130s have been built, and most are still in service. It remains the backbone of the USAF’s tactical transport service; attempts to replace it with the Advanced Tactical Transport Program (ATTP) in the 1980s and to supplement it with the C-27J Spartan in the 2000s both failed, as the USAF realized that the only real replacement for a C-130 is another C-130.

 

57-0526 was only the second C-130B ever built, and would serve as a testbed all of its career. Delivered in 1959, it would test rocket-assisted takeoff (RATO) for the 6515th Test Squadron at Edwards AFB, California; it would test the midair retrieval of satellite film capsules for the 6594th Test Group at Hickam AFB, Hawaii; it would finish testing electronics with the 6514th Test Squadron at Hill AFB, Utah. With 11,000 flight hours under its belt, 57-0526 was retired in 1994 and moved across the runway to the Hill Aerospace Museum.

 

57-0526 may have been recently refinished, as it is in superb shape; it carries Europe One tactical camouflage. To reflect its first assignment testing RATO flights, RATO bottles are attached to the fuselage just forward of the rear crew door.

Between their use of the Daimler-based Dennis testbed, and their purchase of Dominators Tayside Regional Council also borrowed UFP234S from Leicester to try. Note the same ‘on hire’ board in the front window.

Week 1 of the Hazard Services - Probabilistic Hazard Information (HS-PHI) experiment in the NOAA Hazardous Weather Testbed (HWT) at the National Weather Center in Norman, OK. The HS-PHI experiment is part of the Experimental Warning Program. This is the third year of the HS-PHI experiment in the HWT.The HS-PHI experiment advances the Forecasting A Continuum of Environmental Threats (FACETs) initiative by testing software which allows National Weather Services (NWS) forecasters to issue Probabilistic Hazard Information (PHI) at the severe weather warning time and space scales.

Testing prototype SAS HBAs is difficult to do when your testbed is mounted in a full rack. Power supply is resting on a keyboard tray and the disk drives are dangling where I could fit them.

 

I ran the SAS cables from the SAS controller over the processor boards, threaded them between the fans and powersupply before bringing the cables out through an unoccupied disk slot on the front. I also had to run power from the back of the rack to the front. Zip Ties keeps it all somewhat secure.

The loss of Francis Gary Powers’ U-2A on 1 May 1960 underscored the fact that the U-2 was not as invulnerable to interception as originally hoped. If altitude was no longer a defense against Soviet air defenses, speed would be. Clarence “Kelly” Johnson, who had designed the U-2, was put to work with his legendary “Skunk Works” section of Lockheed to develop a very high-speed reconnaissance aircraft to supplement the U-2, named first the A-12—like the U-2’s use of the innocuous “utility” designation, the A-12 would use the outdated “attack” designation, though it carried no weapons.

 

Virtually everything about the A-12 had to be invented on the spot, and even the tools used in its production had to be specially built first. The A-12 was built of mostly light titanium, and design specifications were such that normal tools would damage the airframe. Emphasis was made on stealth and especially high speed: the A-12’s intended normal operating speed was in excess of Mach 3, which at that time had only been achieved with the rocket-powered X-15. To reach this speed, the aircraft would use J58 ramjets: once at altitude, the A-12 would be accelerated to the point that the airflow over its shock-cone intakes would be forced into the engines at above the speed of sound. At speed above Mach 3, the A-12 was more or less pulling itself through the air by brute force, with the engines only providing thirty percent of the thrust.

 

At these speeds, heat was a real problem, as the fuselage would rapidly heat up. Titanium sheds heat better than most metals, and the A-12 was designed with corrugated “skin” that would easily expand and contract with changing airspeed, heat, and altitude. Panels in the aircraft were deliberately designed to be loose on the ground and contract at altitude; fuel leaks on SR-71s were so commonplace that they were not remarked upon. Even the fuel and black paint scheme (actually a very dark blue) were placed and applied to diffuse heat away from leading edges. The A-12, and the short-lived YF-12 interceptor, lacked the extended chines of the later SR-71; these were used to enhance the aircraft’s stealth techniques to reflect away radar. No name was officially attached to the A-12: it was codenamed Project Oxcart (ironically); unoffically, the A-12 pilots referred to it as the Cygnus--Latin for swan, for the A-12's shape. It would be the SR-71 that would finally get an actual name, Blackbird.

 

The A-12s were built at the Skunk Works at Palmdale, California, but flown to Area 51 at Groom Lake, Nevada when completed. There, they undertook test flights around the area, leading to a rash of UFO sightings. Four aircraft crashed; any witnesses were informed that the aircraft were F-105 Thunderchiefs, and bribed to keep quiet. 13 A-12s would eventually be delivered to Groom Lake, one of which was a two-seat trainer.

 

Though the A-12 was intended for overflights of the Soviet Union, it would never fly there. Instead, three A-12s were deployed to Kadena, Okinawa under Operation Black Shield for missions over North Vietnam. These flights were very successful: at Mach 3.2 and 80,000 feet, the A-12s were practically invulnerable to North Vietnamese defenses--or Chinese, as the A-12's turn radius was such that it occasionally ended up over mainland China. The North Vietnamese still tried, occasionally firing a SA-2 Guideline (S-75 Dvina) SAM at an A-12. On 30 January 1967, the North Vietnamese made a concerted effort to bring down one of the A-12, barrage firing six SA-2s at the aircraft. None hit, though one missile detonated only 500 feet behind the A-12. Upon landing at Kadena, a tiny piece of shrapnel was found lodged in one of the A-12's wings. This would be the closest any enemy of the A-12/SR-71 ever got to hitting one.

 

A-12s would also be used during the Pueblo Crisis, operating over North Korea, but with the introduction of the slightly bigger and more capable SR-71, the A-12 was to be retired. All the surviving aircraft were retired in 1968, and put into storage; eventually, after the A-12 was declassified in the 1990s, they were distributed to various museums across the United States. 15 were built (including the two M-21 Tagboard D-21 drone launchers); nine remain today.

 

This is the granddaddy of all A-12/SR-71s: 60-6924, also known as "Article 121" to the CIA, the prototype A-12. Due to delays in the J58, it was initially equipped with J75 turbojets, and made an accidental first flight on 25 April 1962: during a high-speed taxi run, 60-6924 became airborne. It made its "official" first flight the next day. About a year later, 60-6924 was fitted with J58 engines and proved the concept by going over Mach 3. It was used only for testing and flew 322 flights before it was retired with the rest of the A-12 fleet in 1968. It would remain in storage at Palmdale for 20 years before it was placed on display in 1998 at Blackbird Airpark, at the front entrance to Plant 42, the home of the Skunk Works.

 

I misidentified this as a SR-71, but from the angle I was shooting from, I hope it's understandable. Blackbird Airpark was closed by the time we got to Palmdale late on a beautiful California day, which meant I had to get my picture over the fence. This angle still shows off the A-12/SR-71 series' otherworldly appearance.

The Pima Air & Space Museum, located in Tucson, Arizona, is one of the world's largest non-government funded aerospace museums. The museum features a display of nearly 300 aircraft spread out over 80 acres (320,000 m²) on a campus occupying 127 acres (610,000 m²). It is also been the home to the Arizona Aviation Hall of Fame since 1991.

 

A large number of the museum's aircraft are displayed outside with the remainder located in one of the museum's 4 display hangars. In addition to the display hangars, the museum has a restoration hangar.

 

Opened to the public in May 1976 with 48 aircraft then on display, the Museum's main hangar houses an SR-71A Blackbird, an A-10 Warthog, a United States Air Force Through the Years exhibit, and a mock-up of a control tower.

 

The museum is adjacent to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. The 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (AMARG), affiliated with the base, also known as the "Graveyard of Planes" or "The Boneyard", is the largest aircraft storage and preservation facility in the world. Bus tours of the boneyard leave from the museum several times a day from Monday to Friday, except Federal holidays.

 

The nearby Titan Missile Museum is located about 20 miles south of Tucson in Green Valley off of Interstate 19 and features a Titan II intercontinental ballistic missile still in its silo. Tours of the above-ground and underground installations around the missile are conducted daily. More extensive "top to bottom" tours take up to five hours and are conducted several times each month. Reservations required for top to bottom tour.

 

Both museums are overseen by the Arizona Aerospace Foundation and are governed by the Board of Trustees. They are non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization that relies on visitors paying admissions, for trams and AMARG tours, as well as what they spend in the Museum stores. They also rely on memberships and contracted events to pay to restore and acquire exhibits.

The Beechcraft Model 18 (or "Twin Beech", as it is also known) is a 6- to 11-seat, twin-engined, low-wing, tailwheel light aircraft manufactured by the Beech Aircraft Corporation of Wichita, Kansas. Continuously produced from 1937 to November 1969 (over 32 years, a world record at the time), over 9,000 were built, making it one of the world's most widely used light aircraft. Sold worldwide as a civilian executive, utility, cargo aircraft, and passenger airliner on tailwheels, nosewheels, skis, or floats, it was also used as a military aircraft.

 

During and after World War II, over 4,500 Beech 18s were used in military service—as light transport, light bomber (for China), aircrew trainer (for bombing, navigation, and gunnery), photo-reconnaissance, and "mother ship" for target drones—including United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) C-45 Expeditor, AT-7 Navigator, and AT-11 Kansan; and United States Navy (USN) UC-45J Navigator, SNB-1 Kansan, and others. In World War II, over 90% of USAAF bombardiers and navigators trained in these aircraft.

 

In the early postwar era, the Beech 18 was the pre-eminent "business aircraft" and "feeder airliner". Besides carrying passengers, its civilian uses have included aerial spraying, sterile insect release, fish stocking, dry-ice cloud seeding, aerial firefighting, air-mail delivery, ambulance service, numerous movie productions, skydiving, freight, weapon- and drug-smuggling, engine testbed, skywriting, banner towing, and stunt aircraft. Many are privately owned, around the world, with 240 in the U.S. still on the FAA Aircraft Registry in August 2017.

 

Design and development

 

By the late 1930s, Beechcraft management speculated that a demand would exist for a new design dubbed the Model 18, which would have a military application, and increased the main production facilities. The design was mainly conventional for the time, including twin radial engines, all-metal semimonocoque construction with fabric-covered control surfaces, and tailwheel undercarriage. Less conventional was the twin-tailfin configuration. The Model 18 can be mistaken for the larger Lockheed Electra series of airliners, which closely resemble it.

 

Early production aircraft were powered either by two 330-hp (250-kW) Jacobs L-6s or 350-hp (260-kW) Wright R-760Es. The 450-hp (336-kW) Pratt & Whitney R-985 "Wasp Junior" nine-cylinder radial engine became the definitive powerplant from the prewar C18S onwards. The Beech 18 prototype first flew on 15 January 1937, and type certification followed on 4 March that year.

 

The Model 18 has used a variety of engines and has had a number of airframe modifications to increase gross weight and speed. At least one aircraft was modified to utilize 600-hp (447-kW) Pratt & Whitney R-1340 "Wasp" powerplants. With the added weight of about 200 lb (91 kg) per engine, the concept of a Model 18 fitted with R-1340 engines was deemed unsatisfactory due to the weakest structural area of the aircraft being the engine mounts. Nearly every airframe component has been modified.

 

In 1955, deliveries of the Model E18S commenced; the E18S featured a fuselage that was extended 6 in (150 mm) higher for more headroom in the passenger cabin. All later Beech 18s (sometimes called Super 18s) featured this taller fuselage, and some earlier models (including one AT-11) have been modified to this larger fuselage. The Model H18, introduced in 1963, featured optional tricycle undercarriage. Unusually, the undercarriage was developed for earlier-model aircraft under an STC by Volpar, and installed in H18s at the factory during manufacture. A total of 109 H18s was built with tricycle undercarriage, and another 240 earlier-model aircraft were modified with this.

 

Construction of the Beechcraft Model 18 ended in 1970 with a final Model H18 going to Miyazaki Aviation College, Japan. Through the years, 32 variations of the basic design had flown, over 200 improvement modification kits were developed, and almost 8,000 aircraft were built. In one case, the aircraft was modified to a triple tail, trigear, humpbacked configuration and appeared similar to a miniature Lockheed Constellation. Another distinctive conversion was carried out by Pacific Airmotive as the PacAero Tradewind. This featured a lengthened nose to accommodate the tricycle nosewheel, and the Model 18's twin tailfins were replaced by a single fin.

 

Operational history

 

Production got an early boost when Nationalist China paid the company US$750,000 for six M18R light bombers, but by the time of the U.S. entry into World War II, only 39 Model 18s had been sold, of which 29 were for civilian customers. Work began in earnest on a variant specifically for training United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) military pilots, bombardiers, and navigators. The effort resulted in the Army AT-7. Further development led to the AT-11 navigation trainer, C-45 military transport, and F-2 (the "F" standing for "Fotorecon", short for "photographic reconnaissance"). The United States Navy first adopted the Beech 18 as the JRB-1, equivalent to the F-2, followed by the JRB-2 transport; the JRB was initially named the Voyager, but this name did not enter common use, and JRBs were generally called Expeditors like their USAAF counterparts. The first JRB-1 obtained by the Navy, bureau number (BuNo) 09771, was converted from the last civil Model 18 built before production was earmarked solely for the military for the duration of the war. The Navy subsequently obtained more Model 18s as the JRB-3 (C-45B), JRB-4 (UC-45F), SNB-1 Kansan (AT-11), SNB-2 (AT-7), and SNB-2C (AT-7C). Existing naval Twin Beeches were subsequently modified into the SNB-2H air ambulance, SNB-2P reconnaissance trainer, and SNB-3Q electronic countermeasures trainer. The United States Coast Guard acquired seven JRB-4 and JRB-5 aircraft from the Navy between 1943 and 1947; they were primarily used as utility transports, with one aircraft later converted for aerial mapping, and another used for proficiency flying.

 

After the war, the USAAF became the United States Air Force (USAF), and the USAF Strategic Air Command had Model 18 variants (AT-11 Kansans, C-45 Expeditors, F-2 Expeditors, and UC-45 Expeditors) from 1946 until 1951. In 1950, the Navy still had around 1,200 JRB and SNB aircraft in inventory. From 1951 to 1955, the USAF had many of its aircraft remanufactured with new fuselages, wing center sections, and undercarriages to take advantage of the improvements to the civil models since the end of World War II. Eventually, 900 aircraft were remanufactured to be similar to the then-current Model D18S and given new designations, constructor's numbers, and Air Force serial numbers. The USN had many of its surviving aircraft remanufactured as well, resulting in the JRB-6, the SNB-5, and SNB-5P. The Coast Guard retired its JRBs in 1956 and sold most of them as surplus in 1959, but one was retained by the United States Coast Guard Reserve until at least 1972. With the adoption of the 1962 United States Tri-Service aircraft designation system, the Navy's SNB-5 and SNB-5P became the TC-45J and RC-45J respectively, later becoming the UC-45J as their primary mission shifted from aircrew training to utility transport work. The C-45 flew in USAF service until 1963, the USN retired its last UC-45J in 1972, while the U.S. Army flew its C-45s until 1976. In later years, the military called these aircraft "bug smashers" in reference to their extensive use supplying mandatory flight hours for desk-bound aviators in the Pentagon.

 

Beech 18s were used extensively by Air America during the Vietnam War; initially more-or-less standard ex-military C-45 examples were used, but then the airline had 12 aircraft modified by Conrad Conversions in 1963 and 1964 to increase performance and load-carrying capacity. The modified aircraft were known as Conrad Ten-Twos, as the maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) was increased to 10,200 lb (4,600 kg). The increase was achieved by several airframe modifications, including increased horizontal stabilizer angle-of-incidence, redesigned undercarriage doors, and aerodynamically improved wingtips. Air America then had Volpar convert 14 aircraft to turboprop power, fitted with Garrett AiResearch TPE-331 engines; modified aircraft were called Volpar Turbo Beeches, and also had a further increase in MTOW to 10,286 lb (4,666 kg).

 

Spar problems

 

The wing spar of the Model 18 was fabricated by welding an assembly of tubular steel. The configuration of the tubes in combination with drilled holes from aftermarket STC modifications on some of these aircraft have allowed the spar to become susceptible to corrosion and cracking while in service. This prompted the FAA to issue an Airworthiness Directive in 1975, mandating the fitting of a spar strap to some Model 18s. This led, in turn, to the retirement of a large number of STC-modified Model 18s when owners determined the aircraft were worth less than the cost of the modifications. The corrosion on unmodified spars was not a problem; it occurred due to the additional exposed surface area created through the STC hole-drilling process. Further requirements have been mandated by the FAA and other national airworthiness authorities, including regular removal of the spar strap to allow the strap to be checked for cracks and corrosion and the spar to be X-rayed. In Australia, the airworthiness authority has placed a life limit on the airframe, beyond which aircraft are not allowed to fly.

 

Accidents and incidents

 

The Beechcraft Model 18 family has been involved in the following notable accidents and incidents:

 

25 April 1951: Cubana de Aviación Flight 493, a Douglas DC-4 bound from Miami to Havana, registration CU-T188, collided with a U.S. Navy SNB-1, bureau number 39939, on a practice instrument approach to Naval Air Station Key West. The collision and ensuing crashes killed all 34 passengers and five crew aboard the DC-4 and all five crew aboard the SNB. The accident occurred at midday, weather was clear with unlimited visibility, and both flight crews had been cleared to fly under visual flight rules, being expected to "see and avoid" other aircraft; the student flying the SNB was wearing view-limiting goggles, but the other SNB crew were not, and were expected to keep watch. Ground witnesses said that neither aircraft took evasive action prior to the collision, and the Civil Aeronautics Board attributed the accident to the failure of both flight crews to see and avoid conflicting air traffic.

1967: Mohammed bin Awad bin Laden was killed in the crash of a Beechcraft 18 in Saudi Arabia.

10 December 1967: American soul music singer Otis Redding, four members of his backing band the Bar-Kays, the pilot, and another member of Redding's entourage were killed in the crash of Redding's H18, registration N390R, into Lake Monona on approach to Truax Field in Wisconsin. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) was unable to determine the cause of the crash, noting that the left engine and propeller were not recovered. Trumpet player Ben Cauley, the sole survivor of the crash, subsequently revived the Bar-Kays together with another band member who was aboard a different aircraft.

20 September 1973: American folk rock singer-songwriter Jim Croce, four members of his entourage, and the pilot were killed when their chartered E18S, registration N50JR, crashed into a tree shortly after takeoff from Natchitoches Regional Airport in Louisiana. The NTSB attributed the accident to reduced visibility due to fog, and to physical impairment of the pilot, who had severe coronary artery disease and had run 3 mi (4.8 km) to the airport. An investigation conducted for a lawsuit against the charter company attributed the accident solely to pilot error, citing his downwind takeoff into a "black hole" of severe darkness, causing him to experience spatial disorientation.

26 September 1978: Air Caribbean Flight 309, an air taxi flight by a D18S, registration N500L, crashed on approach to Isla Verde International Airport in Puerto Rico, killing the pilot and the five passengers aboard the aircraft and causing substantial property damage and injuries to bystanders on the ground. The pilot could not communicate with approach control and was following directions relayed by local tower controllers, who told the pilot to make a turn and maintain separation from a Lockheed L-1011 that was overtaking the flight, but the pilot did not turn, and the D18S passed underneath and very close to the L-1011. Both the NTSB and a U.S. District Court ruling attributed the crash to the D18S pilot's failure to correctly follow visual flight rules and air traffic control instructions to maintain separation from the much larger L-1011, causing a loss of aircraft control due to wake turbulence. A contributing factor was the pilot's difficulties in communication with controllers.

4 July 1987: Ten people, including all then-current members of The Montana Band, were killed when the pilot of their chartered D18S, N132E, failed to clear a hillside near Lakeside, Montana, while performing a flypast of the venue where the band had performed earlier.[1 The pilot performed an "abrupt" climb and performed a "hammerhead stall" maneuver, reversing direction and entering a dive. The accident was attributed to the pilot's poor judgment and failure to maintain altitude during unauthorized attempted aerobatics.

Das Pima Air & Space Museum (umgangssprachlich kurz: PASM) befindet sich im Südosten von Tucson, Arizona, USA am südlichen Ende der Start- und Landebahn der Davis-Monthan Air Force Base.

 

Auf einer Fläche von rund 320.000 m² werden rund 300, fast ausschließlich militärische Flugzeuge ausgestellt; diese verteilen sich einerseits auf eine Anzahl von Hangars und ähnliche Ausstellungshallen, andererseits auf das weitläufige Außengelände. Nördlich angrenzend befinden sich die Davis-Monthan Air Force Base sowie die 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (kurz: AMARG) mit ihren mehreren Tausend eingelagerten militärischen Flugzeugen; diese Einrichtungen sind nicht Teil des PASM.

 

Die Liste der ausgestellten Flugzeuge ist mit rund 300 sehr umfangreich; teils handelt es sich um die letzten erhalten gebliebenen Exemplare, selten auch um Unikate. Auf Grund der intensiven Sonneneinstrahlung im Süden Arizonas ist insbesondere bei den Ausstellungsstücken im Außenbereich eine sonnenbedingte Verwitterung von Lackierungen, Kunststoffen und Gummi zu erwarten.

Die Beechcraft Model 18 Twin Beech, kurz Beech 18, ist ein zweimotoriger Tiefdecker mit einziehbarem Spornradfahrwerk des US-amerikanischen Herstellers Beech Aircraft, der von 1937 bis 1970 gebaut wurde. Neben zwei Piloten konnten je nach Version zwischen sechs und elf Personen befördert werden.

 

Für die zahlreichen Versionen der Beech 18 wurden insgesamt über zweihundert Zusatz-Musterzulassungen durch die Aufsichtsbehörde FAA erteilt, mehr als für jedes andere Flugzeug.

 

Geschichte

 

In den späten 1930er Jahren wurde ein Kriegsausbruch in Europa immer wahrscheinlicher. Beechcraft entschied sich daraufhin, die Produktionskapazität zu erweitern und ein neues Mehrzweck-Transportflugzeug zu entwickeln. Die Model 18 war ein Ganzmetallflugzeug und verfügte über zwei Sternmotoren sowie ein doppeltes Leitwerk. Die ersten Maschinen verfügten über Jacobs L-6-Motoren mit 225 kW oder Wright R-760E-Motoren mit 260 kW. Am Ende entschied man sich für das 295 kW-Pratt & Whitney Wasp Junior-Triebwerk. Den Erstflug bestritt der Prototyp am 15. Januar 1937.

 

Auch später wurden noch zahlreiche Veränderungen am Antrieb und an der Flugzeugzelle vorgenommen, um die Zuladung und die Geschwindigkeit zu erhöhen. Zwischenzeitlich erhielt das Modell das 450 kW starke Pratt & Whitney R-1340-Triebwerk. Die damit verbundene Gewichtszunahme machte eine fast komplette Neukonstruktion der Zelle notwendig.

 

Einige von Fremdfirmen vorgenommene Veränderungen wurden von Beechcraft für die Serienmodelle übernommen. Bei den letzten Versionen ersetzte der Hersteller die Kolbenmotoren durch Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6-Turboprops mit Hartzell-Propellern.

 

Die Beechcraft Model 18 wurde bis 1970 gebaut. Letzter Kunde war Japan Airlines. Insgesamt entstanden über 9.000 Flugzeuge in 32 Versionen.

 

Nutzung

 

Bis zum Zweiten Weltkrieg waren nur 39 Maschinen verkauft worden. Bei Kriegsbeginn wurde eine Version entwickelt, mit der Piloten, Bombenschützen und Navigatoren ausgebildet werden konnten. Das Ergebnis war die Armeeversion AT-7 Navigator und die Marineversion SNB-2. Später folgten die AT-11 Kansan und SNB-1 sowie der Militärtransporter C-45 Expeditor. Außerdem existierte ein Experimentalflugzeug XA-38, das eine Kanone im Bug installiert hatte, aber nie in Serie ging.

 

Diese Maschinen kamen auf eine geschätzte Flugdauer von 20 Millionen Stunden. Die USAF nutzte die Beechcraft Model 18 (AT-11 Kansan, C-45 Expeditor, F-2 Expeditor und UC-45 Expeditor) von 1946 bis 1951. Die C-45 war bis 1963 für die Luftwaffe im Einsatz. Auch das Strategic Air Command setzte einige C-45 ein. Die Marine stellte ihre letzte SNB 1972 außer Dienst, während die Armeeversion der C-45 bis 1976 im Dienst verblieb.

 

Die Nutzung umfasste darüber hinaus landwirtschaftliche Sprüheinsätze, das Aussetzen von Fischlaich, das Verteilen von Trockeneis zur Regenerzeugung, Feuerlöscheinsätze, den Abwurf von Luftpost, Krankentransporte, Filmproduktionen, Fallschirmsprünge, Schmuggeltransporte, Motorentestflüge oder das Schleppen von Bannern.

 

Gelegentlich wurde die Beech 18 als Passagierflugzeug eingesetzt. So war sie das erste Flugzeug der Philippine Airlines, Asiens ältester Fluggesellschaft. Heute befinden sich zahlreiche Exemplare in Privatbesitz.

 

Zwischenfälle

 

Am 7. August 1965 wurde eine Beechcraft 18/C-45H der US-amerikanischen Traceways (Luftfahrzeugkennzeichen N88Q) bei dichtem Nebel nach dem Start vom Flugplatz Lakewood (New Jersey, USA) gegen eine Stromleitung geflogen. Die Maschine stürzte in ein Wohngebiet und fing Feuer. Durch diesen CFIT (Controlled flight into terrain) wurden alle 8 Insassen, Besatzungsmitglieder und Passagiere, getötet. Das Flugzeug wurde zerstört.

The Boeing C-135A “Stratolifter” is a transport aircraft derived from the prototype Boeing 367-80 jet airliner (also the basis for the 707) in the early 1950s. It has a narrower fuselage and is shorter than the 707. Boeing gave the aircraft the internal designation of Model 717. Since the first one was built in August 1956, the C-135 has been a fixture of the USAF.

 

This aircraft, 60-0377, started out as a standard C-135A “Stratofreighter.” It was then converted to the NC-135A configuration when it was adapted to be the B-2 avionics testbed, on which the radar and navigation systems were tested and validated, with over 300 sorties, before the B-2 took to the air.

Put on display at Southwest Aerospace Museum Fort Worth, TX. Following closure of that museum, transferred to Meacham Airport where it was to be put in a museum to be built at the airport. Plans for the museum were dropped. Briefly moved to AF Plant No 4 and displayed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the CONVAIR plant. Plane then moved to the Lone Star Flight Museum of Galveston, TX in 1990. Hurricane struck the museum and damaged and destroyed many of their aircraft. The museum was able to acquire a new building, but they no longer wanted the Hustler. Moved to Little Rock AFB in 2012 where it will be put on display at an airpark there. In Aug 2012 was on display at Little Rock AFB. I took this photo with a 110 camera in 1979. It must have been recently released from MASDC, and was parked near Allied Aircraft Sales.

The XK120 was launched in roadster form at the 1948 London Motor Show as a testbed and show car for the new Jaguar XK engine. It caused a sensation, which persuaded Jaguar founder and design boss William Lyons to put it into production.

 

The "120" in its name referred to its 120 mph (193 km/h) top speed (faster with the windscreen removed), which made the XK120 the world's fastest standard production car at the time of its launch.

 

It was available in two open versions, first as the roadster (designated OTS, for open two-seater, in America), then also as a drophead coupé (DHC) from 1953 – and also as a closed, or "fixed-head" coupé (FHC) from 1951. The DHC was a more deluxe open model, with wind-up windows, and wood-veneer dashboard and interior door caps, as on the FHC.

 

The roadster was successful in racing.

Der Jaguar XK 120 OTS (Open Two Seater, so die etwas umständliche Bezeichnung für den Roadster) besaß einen Sechszylinder-Reihenmotor mit 3442 cm³ Hubraum und 160 bhp.

 

Ab 1951 gab es den Jaguar XK 120 FHC (Fixed Head Coupé), ein Coupé mit gleicher Motorisierung und 194 km/h Höchstgeschwindigkeit. Bis zur Einstellung 1954 wurden 2678 Stück gebaut.

 

1953 kam der Jaguar XK 120 DHC (Drop Head Coupé), ein Cabriolet mit gefüttertem Stoffdach und der gleichen Motorisierung, auch als SE, dazu. Es wurde allerdings nur ein Jahr lang angeboten und erreichte in diesem Zeitraum die Stückzahl von 1767 Exemplaren.

SKIRTS AND IMPROVEMENTS

Testing quickly demonstrated that the idea of using a single engine to provide air for both the lift curtain and forward flight required too many trade-offs. A Blackburn Marboré turbojet for forward thrust and two large vertical rudders for directional control were added, producing the SR.N1 Mk II. A further upgrade with the Armstrong Siddeley Viper produced the Mk III. Further modifications, especially the addition of pointed nose and stern areas, produced the Mk IV.

 

Although the SR.N1 was successful as a testbed, the design hovered too close to the surface to be practical; at 9 inches (23 cm) even small waves would hit the bow. The solution was offered by Cecil Latimer-Needham, following a suggestion made by his business partner Arthur Ord-Hume. In 1958, he suggested the use of two rings of rubber to produce a double-walled extension of the vents in the lower fuselage. When air was blown into the space between the sheets it exited the bottom of the skirt in the same way it formerly exited the bottom of the fuselage, re-creating the same momentum curtain, but this time at some distance from the bottom of the craft.

 

Latimer-Needham and Cockerell devised a 4 feet (1.2 m) high skirt design, which was fitted to the SR.N1 to produce the Mk V, displaying hugely improved performance, with the ability to climb over obstacles almost as high as the skirt. In October 1961, Latimer-Needham sold his skirt patents to Westland, who had recently taken over Saunders Roe's interest in the hovercraft.Experiments with the skirt design demonstrated a problem; it was originally expected that pressure applied to the outside of the skirt would bend it inward, and the now-displaced airflow would cause it to pop back out. What actually happened is that the slight narrowing of the distance between the walls resulted in less airflow, which in turn led to more air loss under that section of the skirt. The fuselage above this area would drop due to the loss of lift at that point, and this led to further pressure on the skirt.

 

After considerable experimentation, Denys Bliss at Hovercraft Development Ltd. found the solution to this problem. Instead of using two separate rubber sheets to form the skirt, a single sheet of rubber was bent into a U shape to provide both sides, with slots cut into the bottom of the U forming the annular vent. When deforming pressure was applied to the outside of this design, air pressure in the rest of the skirt forced the inner wall to move in as well, keeping the channel open. Although there was some deformation of the curtain, the airflow within the skirt was maintained and the lift remained relatively steady. Over time, this design evolved into individual extensions over the bottom of the slots in the skirt, known as "fingers".

Odd looking thing, it's got a wonky nose. . . . and you'd be forgiven for saying so. because isn't even the nose of a Canberra. 😆😆

 

WV787 spent the whole of it's life as a testbed aircraft, as well as a test bed for de-icing other aircraft in flight (in paticuarly the Jaguar)

 

WV787 was also used as an aerodynamic testbed for the Canberra T.22. and fitted with the nose of a Blackburn Bucaneer which was was similar to the one that had been proposed for the new Canberra T.22. variant.
