FR - 28 mars 2007 - Le Chemin, Km 191 de la LGV Est

 

En cette fin mars 2007, le TGV 4402 modifié en rame d'essais V150 pour atteindre de très hautes vitesses, ne ressemblait plus beaucoup au modèle TGV POS tel qu’il avait été conçu à l’origine.

 

Les TGV POS (POS pour Paris - Ostfrankreich – Süddeutschland) sont une série de 19 rames tricourant construites pour la nouvelle ligne « LGV Est Européenne » Paris Strasbourg, mise en service à partir du 10 juin 2007.

 

Réceptionné par la SNCF en octobre 2006, le TGV 4402 a tout de suite été transformé en « TGV150 », le nom donné au train en configuration d’essais. Fin 2006, il était devenu une bête de course et un laboratoire de mesures roulant, bardé de centaines de capteurs et équipé de nombreuses caméras. L’objet noir protubérant devant le bogie en est une. Les caméras servaient à observer le comportement de diverses pièces pendant les marches d’essais, et fournissaient des images vidéo pour la communication sur l’évènement qu’allait être le record du monde de vitesse sur rails du 3 avril 2007.

 

L’avant du train était particulièrement renforcé et surveillé, parce qu’il était exposé à de fortes pressions aérodynamiques, proches de celles de l’aviation. Le pare-brise était affleurant et ne comportait pas d’essuie-glaces. La trappe d’attelage était condamnée et remplacée par un « bouclier », une pièce monobloc solidement fixée. De ce fait, la rame d’essais ne pouvait pas être remorquée par l’avant. Pour rentrer à son atelier près de Paris, elle ne pouvait être accouplée que du côté arrière avec sa « rame-balai », le TGV 4404. C’était nécessaire parce que la V150 n’était homologué et équipé que pour circuler en essais sur la LGV Est et ne pouvait pas passer sur le réseau ouvert au service commercial.

By late March 2007, TGV 4402, modified into test train V150 for very high-speed running, no longer bore much resemblance to the standard TGV POS design from which it originated.

 

The TGV POS sets (POS for Paris – Ostfrankreich – Süddeutschland) are a series of 19 tri-voltage trainsets built for the new Paris-Strasbourg East European HSL (High Speed Line) that opened to commercial service in June 2007.

 

Accepted into service by SNCF in October 2006, TGV 4402 was immediately converted into the “TGV150”, the designation given to the train in its test configuration. By the end of 2006, it had become both a high-speed testbed and a rolling laboratory, equipped with hundreds of sensors and numerous cameras. The protruding black device ahead of the bogie is one of them. These cameras were used to monitor the behaviour of various components during test runs, and also provided video footage for the communication campaign and television reports surrounding the world rail speed record run of 3 April 2007.

 

The front end of the train was particularly reinforced and closely monitored, as it was subjected to very high aerodynamic pressures. The windscreen was flush-mounted and had no wipers. The coupler hatch was sealed and replaced by a solid, one-piece nose shield securely fixed in place. As a result, the test train could not be hauled from the front. To return to its workshop near Paris, it could only be coupled at the rear to its dedicated high-speed test support trainset, TGV 4404. This was necessary because the V150 was approved and equipped solely for test running on the HSL before it was opened and could not operate over the conventional network in normal service.

Conrail SD60M 5571 was sitting at CP Wye in Rockville waiting on permission into Enola yard in 1993.

 

Trailing the pair of blue EMDs was EMD SD60MAC 9503 undergoing evaluation of the new AC traction. Painted in a quasi-Burlington Northern paint scheme, the SD60MAC was a testbed that led to hoards of AC powered SD70MACs for BN and a few other roads, but only 15 for Conrail.

 

Conrail bought the only SD80MACs produced and placed additional orders for SD80MACs, however due to the pending takeover by Norfolk Southern and CSX the order was changed. CSX opted out of the SD80MAC order in favor of SD70MAC's built to CSX specifications.

 

The SD60MACs were returned to EMD and used for testing.

USS Texas (BB-35) is a museum ship and former United States Navy New York-class battleship. She was launched on 18 May 1912 and commissioned on 12 March 1914.

 

Texas saw action in Mexican waters following the "Tampico Incident" and made numerous sorties into the North Sea during World War I. In World War II, Texas escorted war convoys across the Atlantic and later shelled Axis-held beaches for the North African campaign and the Normandy Landings before being transferred to the Pacific Theater late in 1944 to provide naval gunfire support during the Battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Texas was decommissioned in 1948, having earned a total of five battle stars for service in World War II. It is a (presently closed) museum ship near Houston, Texas.

 

Texas was also a technological testbed: the first US battleship to mount anti-aircraft guns, the first US ship to control gunfire with directors and range-keepers, the first US battleship to launch an aircraft, and one of the first US Navy ships to receive production radar.

 

Texas was the first US battleship to become a permanent museum ship, the first battleship declared to be a US National Historic Landmark, and is the only remaining World War I era dreadnought battleship. She is also one of the eight remaining ships and the only remaining capital ship to have served in both World Wars.

The Western New York & Pennsylvania Railroad is a very forgiving railroad in terms of railfan photography. The wide variety of locations, trains and motive power surely offers anyone a good shot in any weather.

 

However, today was a day where pure sun was much desired.

 

NS 8520 is an AC44C6CF - And as of now it is one of a kind. CAF USA has provided the electronics as well as AC traction motors for this "testbed". And NS has sent it to the WNYP for testing.

 

Today was its first trip pulling a revenue freight train down the WNYP portion of the Buffalo Line. And while earlier attempts for sun were crushed. At Port A. I finally got the desired shot.

The commercial platform was being maneuvered prior to jettisoning a trash container for a fiery, but safe disposal above Earth's atmosphere. Bishop is a multi-faceted airlock attached to the Tranquility module used not only to discard trash, but also to host research payloads, deploy satellites, and serve as a testbed for a variety of space technologies. At right, the Canadarm2 is attached to the U.S. Destiny laboratory module as ground controllers remotely maneuver the robotic arm.

The only Green German Tornado still flying around, ECR testbed

Under a Spanish Experimental registration, Airbus Defence's Airbus A400M EC-400 is seen making a smoky touch-down at RAF Fairford after a spirited performance at the yearly RIAT. This airframe was originally destined for service with the Royal Air Force, and had even been designated it's own registration (ZM421) before being handed over to Airbus as a flying testbed. 14/07/2018.

RFA PROTEUS is a Multi Role Ocean Surveillance Ship (MROSS) which can function as a platform for Remotely Operated Underwater Vehicles (ROUVs) and a testbed for new specialist capabilities, required for monitoring waters important to UK interests.

 

Acquired in 2023, the ship entered drydock at Cammell Laird for modification andformally entered service in October 2023.

 

The ship was formerly named MV TOPAZ TANGAROA in 2017–2022, and was used as a platform supply vessel operated by P&O Maritime Logistics.

 

The vessel was refitted after being sold to the U.K. Ministry of Defence in January 2023.

 

She was built jointly between Vard Brattvaag, Norway and Tulcea shipyard in Romania and weighs 6,133 GRT. Maximum speed is 14 knots.

The Melody is a testbed for some of the Asian Coalition's newer technology; the vessel tours the Border Worlds as a freelancer and doesn't shy away from pursuits, blockade running or straight up combat. Every galactic quarter, the Coalition arranges for this combat data to be downloaded at Ravensmere. This information goes to on inform future technology development for the broader Coalition Navy, whilst these appointments might lead to upgrades for the ship itself.

I've been obsessed with NASA's F-8s since I was a kid, as pictures of this and the Digital Fly-By-Wire testbed seemed to be in all the aviation books I read over and over and over again back then. It's amazing to think that the supercritical airfoil shape on the wings of most modern airliners traces its origins back to this aircraft.

 

For as much attention as NASA gets for their role in space exploration, the SCW F-8 is a great example of just how important their work in the field of aeronautics is.

The Museum of Flight's Jumbo jet aircraft was the first 747 ever built - serial number 001. It first flew on February 9, 1969 over Western Washington. Later, this aircraft served as a testbed for 747 systems improvements and new engine developments for other Boeing commercial jets, including the state-of-the-art Boeing 777 engine program.

That was an unexpected shot! We went to Büchel AFB to see if we could get some German Tonkas, and the only one we got was probably the rarest!

98+79 is a testbed for the next upgrade of the Tornado fleet, the ASSTA 3.1 (Avionic System Software Tornado ADA).

Conrail's BUEN of the 15th of May 1993 rolls south on the Northern Central. Behind the usual SD60M/SD40-2 duo is a four-of-a-kind GM SD60MAC demonstrator, being delivered to Conrail for testing for a few weeks.

 

Painted in a special GM/Burlington Northern scheme, the SD60MAC series paved the way for the thousands of AC-powered EMDs to come. The 9503 spent some time in the BN coal pool, then went back to EMD as a testbed. Conrail never bought the SD60MAC (no one did), but Conrail stepped up for SD80MACs and SD70MACs later on.
