The terminal was one of five passenger railroad terminals that lined the Hudson Waterfront during the 19th and 20th centuries, the others being Weehawken, Hoboken, Pavonia and Exchange Place, with Hoboken being the only station that is still in use, as of 2021.
Paris, gare St. Lazare. Terminal station for Rouen and Normandy trains.
I have already taken this image set to high contrast, so there was no need for black and white adjustment. Nevertheless it is a b&w... :-)
Big stations are very similar to each others - check this one.
New terminal at Warsaw's Frederic Chopin Airport. At 22:00h it was nearly empty, shops were closing. Last flight at 23:00h.
Interesting architecture, but still immediately recognizable as "airport". Much nicer than the old terminal (still in use), which was narrow, no natural light, and low ceilings.
My aversion to airport terminals is no secret. I have a list of my least favourites. Most have so much baggage — including physical, lost or misdirected but that's a pun too far — that with all the goodwill in the world the degeneracy of these edifices can never be unwound.
Under that burning spotlight, how good is it to have a positive airport experience? Funnily enough there seems to be an inverse relationship between how big the airport and the enjoyment of the experience. Here's a little one North Ronaldsay prepared earlier.
Puerto Maldonado had fewer walls. Juliaca had pan pipes! Livingstone as an international airport had open doors without guards. Medan International, Sumatra 1975, was about the size of a garage in an open field with room enough for an immigration desk while the passengers queued outside. Against even these I judge that little building over there to be my favourite.
Big call, I know.
Demolition is planned for this neglected Transbay Transit Terminal, designed by San Francisco architect, Timothy Pflueger
