Tokyo, 2009
Fresh off the shinkansen (bullet train) from Osaka and smiling big on the final full day in Japan.
There was a lot to smile about: I'd visited a score of interesting, photogenic places, seen Mt. Fuji against a nearly cloudless sky during the ride north on the train from Osaka, arrived early to find my cushy room where I was spending my last night was not only ready, but was as spacious and comfortable as I'd hoped. And it had a panoramic view of western Tokyo.

"Sitting on the cold dirty floor
I want to finish the counting of days on the walls
I build a ladder from broken wish bones
And square-shaped stones
That my friends threw down in the hole
Sometimes we tip toe
Sometimes we run
Sometimes we wonder while
Looking at the sun..."

You won't believe what I bought at the flea market today - yup. Barbie dolls ! Mostly to gank their outfits for other dolls, but I had some fun brushing hair - the one with the bow had the remnants of dried, broken rubber band in hers - and cleaning them up.
BTW, when did Barbie clothes on one doll (Ms. Musketeer, there) stop fitting other Barbie dolls like the one right beside her ? Seems like nothing I buy, new or used these days, fits my not-even-vintage-old 80s dolls anymore.
At least with MH, there's only three ghoul bodies, and it's pretty much easy to tell what'll fit each one ! Had the same problem with Kens, too. Hmpft.
On Oct. 16, 2009, the 80 year old Champlain Bridge between Crown Point, NY and Addison, Vermont was closed. It was demolished on Dec. 28, 2009.
Since the bridge was the only land route between Essex County, NY and Addison County, Vermont, it was finally replaced by a free 24/7 ferry on February 1, 2010. A new bridge should be finished by the latter part of 2011.

This is a part of Entergy of Mississippi's project to replace the old wooden poles on this line with taller ones as well as installing a second set of triple-phase electrical power lines or a second circuit as the crew calls it, delivering more electrical power to the ever growing Rex Lumber Company Mill which was drawing way more power than the current grid could handle and with a newer transformer installed over at the nearby Brookhaven Substation, the Rex Lumber Company Mill can operate more efficiently without putting too much strain on the rest of the system.
This project is being done by a subcontractor called Shelton Energy Solutions... a Limited Liability Company (LLC) that is based in Alexandria, Louisiana.
To Support Displaced Youth from Fallujah
Inauguration of Temporary Premises of Fallujah University (Dorms and Classrooms)
in Abu Ghraib, Baghdad
On 23 June 2016, the temporary premises of Fallujah University, located inside the Veterinary College, Baghdad University in Abu Ghraib, were inaugurated. With the generous contribution from the Government of Japan, the temporary premises of Fallujah University were established by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) providing 25 classrooms and 128 residential units that can accommodate 512 students, in addition to basic site infrastructure and an administration building. The project aimed at supporting displaced youth who bear enormous and long-lasting human, social and economic costs.
His Excellency Mr. Sohaib Al-Rawi, Governor of Anbar, who attended the event, commented that while the Anbar Governorate has been supporting institutions displaced by violence outside and within Anbar, including Fallujah University, the ongoing financial crisis has affected all aspects of people’s lives and limited the government’s capacity to support. The Governor acknowledged the efforts of UN agencies and the ongoing support of UN-Habitat on housing self-repair and shelter projects within Ramadi. He expressed his gratitude to all those who stand with people of Iraq, and specifically of Fallujah, in the midst of the hardship they face.
On UN-Habitat’s side, Dr. Erfan Ali, Head of Iraq Programme, pointed out that lack of access to education among youth is one of the key factors that fuel a cycle of poverty, hopelessness and frustration. He expressed his hope that these new premises of Fallujah University will enable young women and men from Fallujah to continue their education and play an active role as agents of positive and constructive change.
Mr. Hirofumi Miyake, Chargé d'Affaires ad interim, Embassy of Japan in Iraq, stated that Japan also has its own internally displaced persons, resulting from disasters of tsunamis, earthquakes, debris, and the latest nuclear accident, and therefore the people of Japan understand very well the importance of support to displaced persons in Iraq. He further emphasized that Japan will continue to sustain the efforts of UN-Habitat to improve the living conditions of the displaced persons in Iraq.
Dr. Ibraheem Abdulkareem, Deputy President of Fallujah University, stated that the completion of the new premises of Fallujah University has provided a glimpse of hope in the heart of displaced students, and he recognized that the inauguration is concomitant to the liberation of Fallujah.
On his part, Mr. Sattar Nawroz Khan, General Director of Migration at the Ministry of Migration and Displacement, praised the joint cooperation and partnership between multiple actors, including the Governments of Iraq and Japan, Anbar Governorate, Fallujah University, and UN-Habitat, that enabled the positive results of the overall project.
This project was implemented within the framework of larger programme titled “Humanitarian Support to Internally Displaced Persons in Iraq through Provision of Durable Shelter,” funded by the Government of Japan, aiming to improve the living conditions of internally displaced persons in Iraq through the provision of prefabricated durable shelters, and thereby to support and strengthen their self reliance.

During KSKA's transmitter and HD Radio upgrades this month (Sep 2007), our engineers installed a temporary transmitter system that provided an on-air signal as old gear was removed and new gear was installed.
The temp transmitter ran at a fraction of the power of KSKA's normal power levels. This cut off listeners in marginal areas, but those closer to the north side of Anchorage and those with better antennas were able to continue to listen.
KSKA is returning to full power transmission, using the new gear, by the start of October. The normal effective radiated power of KSKA's analog FM signal from our site about 11 miles north of Anchorage (across Knik Arm) is about 100,000 watts. The new HD Radio signal will operate at a fraction of the power, yet reach just as far as the analog signal.
I wind up rubbing the Xacto knife on my spare hand to keep bits off the floor or the drawing. They stick and make a mess-- I'm always picking off bits of Ruby the following day from random parts of my skin.
The dogs kept digging up the underground cable line so we purchased these stepping stones to cover up the spot.
I guess eventually we might make this a patio area since we are kind of forced to put something there anyway. I'm thinking we should try to level the ground a bit, fill in all the stepping stones and intersperse rocks between them.
Anyone have a better idea?
