In the wake of the typhoon in late September, 2009, families who could not afford to properly rebuild constructed temporary houses using whatever they could find. Houses such as this one are unlikely to survive the next typhoon season, when Da Nang is hit by as many as five typhoons in the average year.

It's fascinating to see how temporary our landscapes and cityscapes have become and the impact that we can have upon them.
I'm not trying to pass this picture of the female Red-breasted Nuthatch off as a good picture. I just liked the way the shadow from one of the feeder supports looked like a field mark. The 2 RBN's must have made 50 trips each to the feeder during the afternoon. I think they were storing some of the seeds, eating others.
As my bonnet obviously can't be shut with this temporary engine mount in place, while waiting for the new engine mount to arrive, this sorry sight lasted for a few days... Luckily, I never got to find out if it was as weather proof as I had hoped... For the weather has at least been absolutely fantastic over these last few days, and would be for at least another week!

Maj. Gen. Charles Hamilton, the commanding general for the 8th Theater Sustainment Command visits service members of Joint Task Group Engineer and tours construction sites where the engineers built temporary metal roofs for homes in Saipan that were damaged by Super Typhoon Yutu. Joint Task Group Engineer arrived in Saipan, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands in early January to provide temporary metal roofing to damaged homes and officially concluded their Yutu relief and recovery efforts in CNMI Feb. 6-7. Engineers from the Army, Navy and Air Force completed more than 560 temporary metal roofing on homes in Saipan and Tinian, CNMI, while working more than 65,000 hours. (U.S. Army photo by Maj.
