This simple yet elegant portrait of the talented actress Anna May Wong was taken during her successful run in the Broadway production of On the Spot. She would later star in the film version entitled Dangerous to Know (1938). The portrait was taken by noted British photographer Dorothy Wilding, who gained much attention for her images of the Royal family.

Her complexion was described as "a rose blushing through old ivory;" she was beautiful, tall (5'7"), slender, and Chinese-American. The last fact kept her from attaining the highest echelon among Hollywood's pantheon of stars, but it did not affect her popularity, nor keep her from becoming a household name. She was Anna May Wong, nee Wong Liu Tsong, a name which translates to "Frosted Yellow Willows," and she was born, appropriately enough, on Flower Street in Los Angeles' Chinatown on 3 January 1905, above her father's laundry. Anna May Wong's contribution to show business is a unique one; she was the first Asian female to become a star, achieving that stardom at a time when bias against her race was crushing. With determination and talent allied to her exotic beauty, she remained the only Asian female star throughout her forty-year career, never fully overcoming all prejudices in maintaining that position. Perhaps the rediscovery of her art will elevate her star to the pantheon of great performers and serve as a guiding light to Asian performers who still struggle to find their rightful place. Anna May Wong's life and career is something that is important for all who value greatly the Asian / Asian Pacific American communities' many artists and what we can all contribute!

Daughter of the Dragon extended the curse sworn by Dr. Fu on the Petrie family to the next generation. Fu Manchu (Warner Oland), long ago injured and exiled in an attempt on Petrie Sr., returns to London and confronts the father: "In the 20 years I have fought to live," he says in his florid maleficence, "the thought of killing you and your son has been my dearest nurse." He kills the father, is mortally wounded himself and, on his deathbed, reveals his identity to his daughter Ling Moy (Wong) and elicits her vow that she will "cancel the debt" to the Fu family honor and murder the son, Ronald (Bramwell Fletcher)... who, dash it all, is madly infatuated with Ling Moy. Ronald has seen "Princess Ling Moy Celebrated Oriental Dancer" perform, and the vision has made him woozy. "I wish I could find a word to describe her," this calf-man effuses. "Exotic that's the word! And she's intriguing, if you know what I mean." In a near-clinch, Ling Moy wonders if a Chinese woman can appeal to a British toff. When he begs her to "chuck everything and stay," she asks him, "If I stayed, would my hair ever become golden curls, and my skin ivory, like Ronald's?" But the lure of the exotic is hard to shake. "Strange," he says, "I prefer yours. I shall never forget your hair and your eyes." They almost kiss ... when an off-camera scream shakes him out of his dream. It is from his girlfriend Joan (Frances Dade), and the societal message is as clear and shrill: white woman alerting white man to treachery of yellow woman. Ling Moy, a nice girl, previously unaware of her lineage, might be expected to struggle, at least briefly, with the shock of her identity and the dreadful deed her father obliges her to perform. But Wong makes an instant transformation, hissing, "The blood is mine. The hatred is mine. The vengeance shall be mine." Just before his death, Fu mourns that he has no son to kill Ronald. But, in a good full-throated reading, Wong vows: "Father, father, I will be your son. I will be your son!" The audience then has the fun of watching her stoke Ronald's ardor while plotting his death. When she is with him, pleading and salesmanship radiate from her bigeyes. But when an ally asks her why she keeps encouraging the lad, she sneers and says, "I am giving him a beautiful illusion. Which I shall crush." As a villainess, she is just getting started. Revealing her mission to Ronald, she tells him she plans to kill Joan "Because you must have a thousand bitter tastes of death before you die." (The ripe dialogue is by Hollywood neophyte Sidney Buchman, whose distinguished list of credits would include Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Here Comes Mr Jordan and The Talk of the Town.) She soon ascends on a geyser of madness as she decides on a new torture: "My vengeance is inspired tonight. You will first have the torture of seeing her beauty eaten slowly away by this hungry acid." An aide holds a hose gadget over Joan's soon-to-be-corroded face, and Ronald cries for Ling Moy to stop. Very well she says. "Ling Moy is merciful." She barks at Ronald: "Kill her!" He must decide if his favorite white girl is to be etched with acid or stabbed to death. Great stuff! Melodrama is the art of knowing how precisely too far to goThe film is a triangle: not so much of Ling Moy, Ronald and Joan as of Ling Moy, Ronald and a Chinese detective, Ah Kee, played by Sessue Hayakawa, the Japanese actor who in the teens was Hollywood's first Asian male star. He's not plausibly Chinese here, and he is in a constant, losing battle with spoken English. But he is a part of movie history, in the only studio film of the Golden Age to star two ethnically Asian actors. And he gives his emotive all to such lines as "It is the triumph of irony that the only woman I have ever deeply loved should be born of the blood that I loathe." And in the inevitable double-death finale neither the villainess nor the noble detective can survive the machinations of Hollywood justice he gently caresses the long hair of the lady he would love to have loved. "Flower Ling Moy," he says, a moment before expiring. "A flower need not love, but only be loved. As Ah Kee loved you."
The Personal Anna May Wong
This 5'7 beauty loved to study and could speak in an English accent, as well as being fluent in German and French with more than a passing knowledge of other tongues including Italian and Yiddish. For exercise she rode horses, played golf, and tennis. She liked to cook and regaled her guests with succulent Chinese dishes at frequent dinner parties. She preferred casual clothes, wearing slacks and sweaters at home, but cultivated an oriental motif in her very smart formal wardrobe. She studied singing with Welsh tenor Parry Jones before she participated in the film Limehouse Blues as George Raft's mistress. Anna loved to dance to contemporary music. Anna was quoted as saying, "I think I got my first chance because they thought I was peculiar. But, now I like to believe that the public are fond of me because they think I'm nice."
The story of Anna May Wong’s life traced the arc of triumph and tragedy that marked so many of her films. Wong's youthful ambition and screen appeal got her farther than anyone else of her race. But her race, or rather Hollywood's and America's fear of giving Chinese and other non-whites the same chance as European Americans, kept her from reaching the Golden Mountaintop. We can be startled and impressed by the success she, alone, attained. And still weask: Who knows what Anna May Wong could have been allowed to achieve if she
had been Anna May White?
Anna May Wong passed away on Feb. 3rd 1961 she was 56 years old.

Yesterday, 1 December 2022, beautiful and talented Myléne Demongeot (1936) passed away in Paris. In 1957, she became one of the blond sex symbols of the French cinema when she seduced Yves Montand in Les sorcières de Salem. The coquettish French actress would go on to co-star in the three Fantômas adventures and many other European films of the 1950s and 1960s. In the 1980s she also became a producer. Demongeot was 87.
Marie-Helene Demongeot was born in Nice, France in 1935 into a family of actors. Her parents met in Shanghai, China, and moved to Nice, France. Her mother, Klaudia Trubnikova, was a Russian-Ukrainian emigre from Kharkiv who escaped from the horrors of the Russian Civil War. Her father, Alfred Demongeot, was of French-Italian heritage. The family was bilingual and young Demongeot was able to use Russian and French, but eventually switched to French. She grew up in Nice. After the war, at 13, she went to Paris and continued her education there. She studied piano under the tutelage of Marguerite Long and Yves Nat. At the age of 15, she became a model in the atelier of Pierre Cardin and studied dramatic art with Marie Ventura at Le Cours Simon in Paris. Two years later, she made her film debut with a supporting role in Les enfants de l'amour/Children of Love (Léonide Moguy, 1953) starring Etchika Choureau. More small parts followed in Futures Vedettes/Joy of Living (Marc Allégret, 1955) with Brigitte Bardot, and the British musical comedy It's a Wonderful World (Val Guest, 1956). Then she had her breakthrough at the side of Yves Montand and Simone Signoret with a memorable seduction scene in Les sorcières de Salem/The Crucible (Raymond Rouleau, 1957), based on the play by Arthur Miller.
With appearances in three or four feature films yearly, Mylène Demongeot would rise to international fame in the late 1950s. Demongeot's first notable leading role was in Sois belle et tais-toi/Be Beautiful But Shut Up (Marc Allégret, 1958) opposite Henri Vidal, where she played a 17-year-old jewel smuggler. She further developed her screen image of a manipulative but humorous blond mistress opposite David Niven in Bonjour tristesse (Otto Preminger, 1958, and opposite Alain Delon in the comedy Faibles femmes/Three Murderesses (Michel Boisrond, 1959). Many of her screen assignments were along the ooh-la-la lines of her Swedish maid in the British Upstairs, Downstairs (Ralph Thomas, 1959). In Italy, she played opposite Steve Reeves in the Peplum (sword and sandal epic) La battaglia di Maratona/Giant of Marathon (Jacques Tourneur, 1959), with Rosanna Schiaffino and Elsa Martinelli in La notte brava/Bad Girls Don't Cry (Mauro Bolognini, 1959) based on a script by Pier Paolo Pasolini, again with Elsa Martinelli in the comedy Un amore a Roma/Love in Rome (Dino Risi, 1960) and with Roger Moore in Il ratto delle sabine/Romulus and the Sabines (Richard Pottier, 1961).
Among Mylène Demongeot's best-known film-works are the role of manipulative Milady de Winter in the two-part adventure film Les trois mousquetaires/The Three Musketeers (Bernard Borderie, 1961) and the role of Helen in the Fantômas trilogy (André Hunebelle, 1964-1967), co-starring with Jean Marais and Louis de Funès. Other incidental interesting films were À cause, à cause d'une femme (Michel Deville, 1963) with Jacques Charrier, the comedy 12 + 1 (Nicolas Gessner, 1969) with Sharon Tate, and the Canadian drama Quelques arpents de neige/A Few Acres of Snow (Denis Héroux, 1972). Although she gradually fazed out of her stereotypical image of a beautiful French coquette, she still looked pretty convincing in the image of a mid-aged Madame, which she developed in the 1980s in films like Tenue de soirée/Evening Dress (1986, Bertrand Blier) starring Gérard Depardieu. On TV she appeared in the detective series Il professore/Big Man (Steno, 1988-1989) starring Bud Spencer, and in The Man Who Lived at the Ritz (Desmond Davis, 1988).
Mylène Demongeot was the co-owner of Kangarou Films, a production company she had founded with her late husband, director Marc Simenon, the son of Georges Simenon. During the 1970s and 1980s, they produced a number of unsuccessful films like Par le sang des autres/By the Blood of Others (Marc Simenon, 1974) and Signé Furax/Signed Furax (Marc Simenon, 1981). Marc Simenon died in 1999. Demongeot made a comeback in the crime drama 36 Quai des Orfevres/Department 36 (Olivier Marchal, 2004) starring Daniel Auteuil, and Victoire (Stephanie Murat, 2004) as the mother of Sylvie Testud. Later films were La Californie/French California (Jacques Fieschi, 2006) based on a short story by Georges Simenon, the hit comedy Camping (Fabien Onteniente, 2006), and the sequel Camping 2 (Fabien Onteniente, 2010). With director Hiner Saleem, she made Sous les toits de Paris/Beneath the Rooftops of Paris (Hiner Saleem, 2007) and Si tu meurs, je te tue/If You Die, I'll Kill You (Hiner Saleem, 2011). Demongeot also wrote several books, the best known are Tiroirs Secrets (Secret drawers, 2001) and Animalement vôtre (Animally Yours.2005). In the 2000s Demongeot made a pilgrimage to the birthplace of her mother in Kharkiv, Ukraine. There she planted a commemorative tree and presented her autobiographical book, Les Lilas de Kharkov (The Lilacs of Kharkiv, 1990). In 2006 she was named Commander in the Order of Arts and Letters for her achievements in acting. Mylène Demongeot is currently residing in Nice in the south of France. Her latest films included the comedy-drama Elle s'en va/On My Way (Emmanuelle Bercot, 2013), starring Catherine Deneuve, and Camping 3 (Fabien Onteniente, 2016), which became the second-highest-grossing domestic film in France in 2016, with 3,228,313 tickets sold. died on 1 December 2022 in Paris at the age of 87. In October 2022. she announced that her peritoneal cancer, from which she had been declared cured in 2019, had returned.

This is the unmistakable hand of Albert, one of the most remarkable people I know (and his soon-to-be wife, Sasha; a lady of equal amazingness). An accomplished metal fabricator and talented artist who works mainly in steel, Al is known to be a man of unfailing affableness who, due to his profession, is perpetually encased in a gritty layer of black sooty dirt.
His metalshop is wondrous place that has been a constant source of inspiration for me, its proprietor always quick with encouragement and guidance regarding the daunting task entrepreneurship (generally followed by an enthusiastic, yet extraordinarily dirty high-five), which has been an unending comfort since I decided two years ago to strike out on my own to work for myself. So it is with great pride and excitement that I am anticipating his impending wedding. As with everything he does, be it a cloud of flames, the defiance of the force of gravity, the (pretend) devouring of human flesh, or the design and production of sailboats, architectural details, giant metal spiders, or minor home repairs, Albert tackled the creation of his own wedding rings with a an unrivaled vigor, thoughtfulness, wit, and originality.
Inspired by characteristics of the materials that have shaped his life and his career, Al created a unique pair of rings designed to age and transform along with their wearers. The future two-person husband-wife team are destined to bear symbols of their union formed by a combination of two contrasting materials; the first of which is gold: a metal traditionally used in wedding rings due to its inherent preciousness and ability to maintain a consistent color, shine, and surface. Though in these atypical rings, the gold exists only on the inside. Mostly hidden against the skin, the precious metal serves as a shared secret, revealing itself only at the very edges for others to glimpse. Though they may seem thin, these edges are hand-hammered for a texture designed to reflect the greatest possible amount of light, causing them to exude a humble yet powerful underlying strength and beauty.
The second material is hand-forged steel. Forging, one of the oldest known metalworking processes, consists of combining two types of steel with slightly different qualities. By heating them until they are white-hot and continuously folding them together and pounding them out flat again, they are kneaded into a new material that is distinctively robust due to the manner in which it was created (this is the process used by medieval weaponsmiths to make legendary swords). The steel in the rings is treated to have a muted finish known to alter in color, texture and sheen. Over time these rings will develop a handsome patina, serving as a literal representation of the all the experiences that the hands of their wearers will share together; forever changing, adapting and developing, becoming wiser and more refined.
My most heartfelt congratulations to Albert and Sasha on their engagement. I'm looking forward to noticing this exceptional ring on this exceptionally dirty hand for many years to come!

Tried out the new 9mm Viltrox ultrawide lens on the A6700 down at Yankalilla Show....It's going to take some getting used to!
I've been in touch with Tyshan for quite a while! He's an super talented up and coming singer and had asked me a while back if I'd be interested in shooting the cover for his new single! We communicated over email for a few months and I finally met him for the first time and had a successful shoot yesterday night!
More photos to come over the next few days! This wasn't actually part of the shoot at all, he had parked his care outside the student center so we could load it up with a few bags of lighting equipment and I had been staring at the area in between the library and student center where the sun was slowly dropping, casting long shadows and spilling golden light everywhere, so I couldn't resist and told him to run over for a few seconds while I take a few quick snapshots. I love golden hour and back light and the weather has been incredible the past few days (it seems like winter is gone even though it never really hit this year) so I was happy to take a few casual shots like this.
Thanks to Renee for lending me her lovely camera (I need to stop bumming my friends' 5d II's so I'm selling my mark 1 and will pick up a used one soon since the price is so low!) I love the 35mm for these types of shots and focusing is always ridiculous on the 5d whenever there is any sort of light behind a subject...
His chain's outta place etc etc but I wanted to be really quick so we could get back to the car before we got a ticket :P
I painted these tulips a couple of years ago. They remind me of Spring...Perhaps it's just around the corner.

I wanted to twirl in Union station, it was on my list for the day, and I was with a group of talented gals. So I handed my camera to Staci and she took it out of my comfort zone (AV) shooting and did some timed shooting so the movement can be seen, my camera was a foreigner to her however she was brave and fiddled with some settings. She didn't like her work but I LOVE her work, it looks like I'm in a dream and yesterday was like a dream, a very good one. I love the way it turned out.

Then I have to remind myself of the joy photography brings me when i AM capturing something/anything with my camera.
