SPEAKEASY is a cultural project that aims to provide residents of Seoul with an innovative and inclusive meeting place. Through a bi-lingual magazine and a party/events circuit, SPEAKEASY seeks to foster the exchange of ideas and culture between Koreans and foreigners by providing outlets for creative expression. A non-profit organization, it strives to encourage community involvement and a cross-cultural dialogue that will extend beyond the page and the club into people’s daily experience of the city. These photographs are from our first fundraiser of 2010. If you attended or performed, thank you so much! If not, we hope to see you next time.

Ben Denman is a young, multi-talented musician, learning drums, bass and guitar at just 11 years old. He has played with numerous bands along the way but said his biggest influence has been his old man. Together with his brother Ash they formed Triple Treat, Ben’s first band. They played gigs around the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast before Ben moved onto his next band, Easy for Willace and finally Bad Habits. He is now putting together his own album. One of the best gigs he’s been to was Tommy Emmanuel and his quartet, who he said he now strives to play like.

The Japanese Postal Service is very considerate and offers these very classy eyeglasses to anybody who might need them while writing letters or filling out forms. I didn't need reading glasses to fill out my postcard but I felt so flattered by this consideration that I wore them anyway.

I can't knit but I can sew. Unfortunately I didn't get a good shot of my gifts.

Brilliant satirist, humanist, observer of the human condition, talented musician, writer, soldier, tormented mind and inspiring performer: Spike Milligan.

He was born in India, served in the British Army and saw Vesuvius' last eruption while based in Naples. Risking his life in the British Army wasn't enough to secure his citizenship because the principled Spike would not swear an Oath of Allegiance. And so here lies an Irishman in English soil in a pretty little seaside village.

His satirical TV piece where sitting, back resting against railings, draped in the Union Flag and singing Land of Hope and Glory as passersby pelt him with flour bombs recalls the absurdity of the Brexit debate; surely something which ought have been had with the populous prior to, not after a referendum. Spike would have had great sport with this absurdity.

Always trying to have the last laugh, he was confronted with church officials who denied him his wish for a clever epitaph in his native English. Instead of a victory, the joke is likely on the church. Here is a place of pilgrimage. A place to spend a quiet reflective moment in a little churchyard and take in the words which seem to mock that supercilious church heirachy: Dúirt mé leat go raibh mé breoite. It supposedly translates from Gaelic as I told you I was ill.

He was famous for telling us that Without a plan nothing can go wrong. Despite that, his plans for an epitaph turned the tables and got him the last laugh after all.

Vale Spike.

Please see the Dodos live if you are able to catch them. They are more than worth it.

The Dodos are no doubt one of my favourite bands right now. I watched them open for Akron/Family back in October at the Croc in Seattle but fell in love with the opening act. I continued to see the Dodos open for Les Savy Fav, and I was so happy to see them headline here in Van at the Bourbon. Plug.
