JARDINS DE LES TRES XEMENEIES IMPRESSIONS IN A CONCRETE GARDEN AV. DE PARAL·LEL, 49 BARCELONA CATALONIA

You have to take the term “gardens” in its official name with a pinch of salt when you first see the concrete flatness of this Barcelona park, though the free art on its walls changes as regularly as any city gallery, making it a worthwhile stop on your route. An ex-industrial site, the shimmering haze of its birches nevertheless perfectly counterpoints the aesthetic of heavy machinery and bright graffiti.

Such a hardwearing urban veneer makes it ideal not just as a regular concert venue but also for the skateboarding and tagging communities, both local and out-of-town. While taking photos here, the four artists who I found working on the mural walls had come down from Newcastle, UK. Moscrop had been here the summer before and returned with his mates Eli, Nesbit and Si (Lag) this year. Was this the modern equivalent of the way, a century ago, northern impressionists would come down on painting holidays, drawn by Spain’s exceptional light? The hardness in the light does seem to bring out the brilliance in colours.

It’s also a popular skateboarding site. A German friend, while holidaying in Barcelona with her teenage son last year, would drop him off at this park every day so she wouldn’t have to drag a sullen adolescent around the galleries and sights she was keen to see. It was an arrangement that worked for them both.

The three chimneys dominate the space. They are what remains of a power generation plant that used to be known as La Canadenca (The Canadian) despite being founded by an American. When electrical power was in its infancy at the turn of the twentieth century, it seemed like too risky a venture to attract many conservative Catalan investors.

So an American entrepreneur named Frederick Stark Pearson was persuaded to set up the Barcelona Traction, Light and Power Company Limited in 1911. The parent company then spawned a host of subsidiaries to develop the trams, rail network, two large dams and a canal system, power generation and water supply in Barcelona. By 1914 it was the largest electricity supplier in Europe and the seventh-largest in the world. The company was at the centre of a strike in 1919 that developed into a Catalonia-wide general strike, which the workers of the anarcho-syndicalist CNT union eventually won.

Pearson himself perished when the RMS Lusitania was torpedoed and sunk in 1915. After the Spanish Civil War, the company continued to expand for a short time under Franco, but his decree, prohibiting the exit of capital from Spain meant its foreign shareholders could not be paid and proved the company’s death knell.

You can see more Barcelona street art at bombcelona (in Spanish).

Flinders Street Station is the central railway station of the suburban railway network of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is on the corner of Flinders and Swanston Streets next to the Yarra River in the heart of the city, stretching from Swanston Street to Queen Street and covering two city blocks.

Each weekday, over 110,000 commuters and 1,500 trains pass through the station. It is the most used metropolitan railway station in Melbourne, in 2009 there was an average of 85,100 passenger boardings per day. Flinders Street is serviced by Metro's suburban services, and V/Line regional services to Gippsland.

Flinders Street Station is a cultural icon to Melbourne, frequently used in imagery representing the city. The Melburnian idiom "I'll meet you under the clocks" referring to the row of clocks above the main entrance, which indicate the departure time of the next train on each line; another idiom "I'll meet you on the steps", refers to the wide staircase underneath these clocks. The area is a popular meeting place as it is at the intersection of two of the city's busiest thoroughfares. The station is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.

In 1882 the government decided to build a new central passenger station to replace the existing ad-hoc construction. A design competition was finally held in 1899 with 17 entries received. The competition was essentially for the detailed design of the station building, since the location of the concourse, entrances, the track and platform layout, the type of platform roofing and even the room layout to some extent was already decided.

The £500 first prize went to railway employees James Fawcett and H. P. C. Ashworth of Fawcett and Ashworth in 1899, whose design named Green Light was of French Renaissance style, and included a large dome and tall clock tower.

The first electric train operated from Flinders Street to Essendon in 1919, and by 1926 it was the world's busiest passenger station. To cater for the increasing numbers of passengers, the Degraves Street subway from the station was extended to the north side of Flinders Street in 1954. In March 1966 platform one was extended to 2,322 feet (708 m) long.

Gift tag. "Happy birthday". Card board, laces, ribbons, buttons, beads.

I made the tag with watercolor paper. Painted a nest added a charm that I painted a little bird

I am supposed to list sixteen things about myself. Here goes.

1. I’ll be 45 in February.

2. I married my high school sweetheart 25 years ago.

3. We have three daughters who are all in college now.

4. I’m Christian.

5. I love all of nature but especially plants, dogs, and birds.

6. I work from my home computer as a medical transcriptionist in the sunroom that I’m pictured in here. Since I spend so much time at the computer we built this room so I can be surrounded by my plants and a few birds.

7. Montana truly is the last best place to me. The winters are harsh but you can’t beat the summers. I think our winters keep away big bugs and other undesirables. Our air is fresh and our water is pure. I’ve hiked to the glacier that produces the creek that runs near our house and that feeds our underground water supply.

8. We live in a very rural area but we’re an hour away from decent shopping.

9. I love to cook and wish I had more time to concentrate on it. That work thing gets in the way of my fun!

10. I like my house to be peaceful and quiet.

11. I show two of our four dogs.

12. I like all kinds of music...from classical to heavy metal...okay maybe not rap.

13. My biggest accomplishment is raising our three daughters to be smart, funny, productive members of society.

14. Camping is one of my favorite things. I’ve even camped in the snow in a tent...once.

15. 4-wheeling high in the mountains is something we love to do in the summer.

16. I would rather watch a sunset than a movie.

There, sixteen things. That was harder than I thought.
