Cambridge University's 800th Anniversary was launched with a light show projected onto Senate House on the 17th of January (2009), which traced 800 years of Cambridge's history. Here's Charles Darwin, a student of Christ's College , Cambridge. February 12th, 2009 marks 200 years of his birth.
My work, photo based images and videos, addresses the common experience of dwelling in the rotting and evolving urbanity today.

Our common existence is framed by the continuum of space and time. The absorption of unique experiences generated by these quantum variables, layers and marks the personal journey.
Wall construction emerged in our cultural vernacular as a basic means to physically organize, protect and define our sense of space. Transmogrified by the passage of time, this flat surface partition becomes embedded with intimate meaning – marks of a collective presence. And so, this wall, a two-dimensional division, becomes the very membrane broken to explore the layers of our personal and collective psyche by excavating the substance beneath structure. To slowly, methodically and meditatively deconstruct this architectural barrier of paint, plaster and wooden slats, the skeleton and anatomy of our joint experience is explored through this exposition. The process of creation and destruction is not simply about addition with equal subtraction. Instead, this work, deploying the theatrics of removal and des destruction attends to experiential evolution; an ongoing developmental change transmuting and subjugating both space and time.

As the only Buddhist and the only Asian in segregated Baltimore classrooms in the early 1950s, I resented attempts to convert me to Christianity. When the words “under God” were added to the Pledge of Allegiance, I mouthed the words, but could not bring myself to say them aloud. I thought to myself, maybe Jesus was not the only spiritual leader
to walk on water, or at least hover over it.
The robed figure in the painting was inspired by an anonymous priest in my grandmother's photo album. His traditional Japanese black kimono is colored saffron, in reference to the Hindu and Theravadan roots of Japanese Buddhism. The street scene is a compressed view from my window at a San Francisco neighborhood, stop sign and phone booth symbolizing modern life, wooden piers alluding to an earlier, seaport San Francisco. Above is a Van Gogh sun, but its urgently psychotic potential is transmuted by the priest. Material illusions ripple outward from his feet towards the calm of the eternal.

We went to a special Friends-of-Yorkshire-Sculpture-Park event this evening, an exclusive viewing of the final stage of a research and development project "Hot Heads" by pa-Boom (www.pa-boom.com).
The project was designed to create, build and test a series of large scale sculptural human head braziers/fire sculptures, and tonight was the first public lighting of them.
They reminded me very much of the work of Juame Plensa (who so far has been my favourite exhibition at the sculpture park).
Armed with a complementary hot chocolate and slice of parkin, we headed over to the burn site, where the 3 large heads were duely set alight- there's something very beautiful about fire, and it was interesting to see how they came alive and changed over time as the charcoal slowly caught fire and over time glowed and decomposed.
The heads themselves were very well constructed, with the metal mesh frame containing and keeping the shape of the heads as the charcoal burnt and also controlling the burn - being a relatively small managable crowd it was refreshing at an event like this to actually be allowed close to the fires - they were roped off a little, but realistically you couldnt stand next to the rope for any length of time they were packing so much heat (infact I felt positively freezing wondering back from a little to take a wide shot!)
I'm looking forward to see where the project leads next - it made for a wonderful autumn evening and i'd do it again at the drop of a hat!
Birth of the mysterious Alchemical Sentinels
3 months working day and night with an exceptional “dream team"… a big thank you to ACS, Luc, my trusty Giant who could lift a juggernaut onto a balcony (QED Thierry Loir) Thomas Cart'1, Goin, and of course Marc for the paints.
I have managed to set up my installation of 99 raw steel sculptures with an incredibly demanding specification: none of the 3600 work on the DDC site were to be hidden… we had to think about power sources, water crossings, access for construction machinery including the telescopic booms (3m wide)… public safety, ERP museum standards, etc, ... constantly alternating between the visible and the invisible...
Are they inhabited? I don’t know. One thing is certain: each sentinel stands as a unique sculpture in terms of its alchemical elements and paintwork (either with anti-rust paint or voluntarily with paints that do not resist rust). This autumn, each sentinel will reveal – with the acid rain – different interpretations, depending on the paints and solvents used, making each one different, with stratifications that future archaeologists will decipher.
But my most perilous challenge was to create a giant (9000 m²) installation that envelops the Abode of Chaos with dozens of tons of steel, so that my visitors, from any angle, enter a dreamlike fantasy and where the world of the Abode of Chaos on the one hand and that of the 99 monumental sculptures (named "Alchemical Sentinels" during an extremely busy night ) intersect like the Inframince defined by Marcel Duchamp (or, how to build intensities by subtraction).
These 99 Alchemical Sentinels are now the guardians of the Sanctuary that the Abode of Chaos has become. I designed them as veritable quantum energy wells that we placed with patience and wisdom at different spots all over the Abode of Chaos.
There are 99 in total, made of 10mm rough steel (50 tons), welded to form perfect equilateral triangles. Each of the three sides constituting an Alchemical Sentinel is itself cut to reveal a meurtrière, again in the shape of an equilateral triangle, presenting a superb Euclidean geometry to the visitor.
These 99 Alchemical Sentinels are each placed at specific energy points on the 9000 m² of the Abode of Chaos. Some are hidden by vegetation or natural landforms or are placed in relation to existing works. Others are located in our private and professionals spaces.
In my alchemical work that began on 9 December 1999, the three gates arranged in an equilateral triangle with one vertex pointing upwards, form the luminous delta. They represent the three elements that alchemists work with. These three elements are sulphur, mercury and salt.
Note that the three elements found in the Prima Materia (or Alchemical Chaos) are very closely related. The point triangle is also the symbol of the fire philosophers.
The equilateral triangle resting on its base – like the three points – is the symbol of the fire element, one of the four elements that the alchemist works with in the laboratory.
The geometric properties of the equilateral triangle evoke absolute perfection by their spiritual strength and their age-old symbolism going back to ancient Egypt… strength, beauty and harmony.
They will remain for a thousand years as witnesses to a civilization lost through the folly of men.

3 mois de travail jour et nuit, une "dream team" hors du commun, un grand merci à ACS, Luc, mon fidèle Géant qui poserait un 38 T. sur un balcon (cqfd Thierry Loir) Thomas, Cart'1, Goin et bien sûr Marc pour les peintures.
Je suis arrivé à poser mon installation de 99 sculptures d'acier brut avec un cahier des charges de ouf, aucune des 3600 œuvres de la DDC ne devaient être occultées, penser aux sources électriques, les passages d'eau, les voies de transport pour engin de chantier, les nacelles télescopiques (3m de large), protéger le grand public, respecter les normes ERP muséales, etc… Alterner en permanence monstration et effacement…
Sont-elles habitées ? Je l'ignore. Une chose certaine est que chacune, par les éléments alchimiques et les codes peints soit à l'antirouille soit volontairement avec des peintures dégradables par la rouille avec le temps, rend chaque sentinelle comme une sculpture unique. Cet automne chaque sentinelle va laisser apparaître, avec les pluies acides, différents niveaux de lecture, selon les peintures et solvants utilisés, les rendant singulières avec des stratifications que les archéologues des temps futurs décrypteront...
Mais mon défi le plus périlleux, était de créer une installation géante de 9000 m2 qui enveloppe, par des dizaines de tonnes d'acier, la Demeure du Chaos pour que mes visiteurs sur 360 degrés, plongent dans un univers onirique et fantasmagorique où les deux univers que sont la Demeure du Chaos d'une part et d'autre part l'installation des 99 sculptures monumentales (baptisées par une nuit très agitée "Sentinelles Alchimiques") s'entrecroisent selon l'Inframince définit par Marcel Duchamp (ou comment construire des intensités par soustraction).
Ces 99 Sentinelles Alchimiques sont désormais les gardiennes du Sanctuaire que représente la Demeure du Chaos. Je les ai conçus comme de véritable puits d’énergie quantique que je pose avec patience et sagesse sur l’ensemble de la Demeure du Chaos.
Elles sont au nombre de 99, faites d’acier brut de 10 mm (50 tonnes) soudées pour former un triangle équilatéral parfait. Chacun des 3 pans constituant une Sentinelle Alchimique, est lui même découpé pour laisser entrevoir une mystérieuse meurtrière, elle même en forme de triangle équilatéral, donnant ainsi une géométrie Euclidienne au regard du visiteur.
Ces 99 Sentinelles Alchimiques sont chacune à des points d’énergie particuliers de la Demeure du Chaos sur 9000 m2. Certaines se dissimulent par la végétation ou les reliefs naturels ou bien en écho aux autres œuvres, d’autres sont dans les espaces privatifs ou professionnels.
Dans mon travail alchimique démarré le 9 décembre 1999, les trois portes disposées en triangle équilatéral, dont un sommet est dirigé vers le haut, forment le delta lumineux. Elle sont les trois corps sur lesquels l’alchimiste va œuvrer. Ces trois corps sont le soufre, le mercure et le sel.
Soulignons que les trois corps présents dans la Materia Prima ou Chaos alchimique sont étroitement mélangés. Le triangle de point est aussi la marque des philosophes par le feu.
Le triangle équilatéral reposant sur sa base, à la manière des trois points, est le symbole de l’élément feu, l’un des quatre éléments avec lequel l’alchimiste travaille au laboratoire.
Les propriétés géométriques du triangle équilatéral relèvent de la perfection absolue par sa force spirituelle, son symbolisme de la nuit des temps notamment dans l’ancienne Egypte, il est force, beauté et harmonie.
Elles resteront durant mille ans comme les témoins d’une civilisation disparue par la folie des hommes

The Ghost Festival, also known as the Hungry Ghost Festival, or Yu Lan is a traditional Chinese festival and holiday celebrated by Chinese in many countries. In the Chinese calendar (a lunisolar calendar), the Ghost Festival is on the 15th night of the seventh month (14th in southern China).
In Chinese tradition, the fifteenth day of the seventh month in the lunar calendar is called Ghost Day and the seventh month in general is regarded as the Ghost Month (鬼月), in which ghosts and spirits, including those of the deceased ancestors, come out from the lower realm.
Distinct from both the Qingming Festival (in spring) and Chung Yeung Festival (in autumn) in which living descendants pay homage to their deceased ancestors, on Ghost Day, the deceased are believed to visit the living.
On the fifteenth day the realms of Heaven and Hell and the realm of the living are open and both Taoists and Buddhists would perform rituals to transmute and absolve the sufferings of the deceased. Intrinsic to the Ghost Month is ancestor worship, where traditionally the filial piety of descendants extends to their ancestors even after their deaths.
Activities during the month would include preparing ritualistic food offerings, burning incense, and burning joss paper, a papier-mâché form of material items such as clothes, gold and other fine goods for the visiting spirits of the ancestors

Norton's Ordinall was written as a handbook for increasing the riches of the poor, one of the main goals of alchemy being to transmute base metals into gold. The text describes the general alchemical processes of the fifteenth century. A Member of Parliament for Bristol and occasional emissary for Edward IV, Norton became a pupil of the renowned philosopher George Ripley, Canon of Bridlington, and devoted most of his life to the hermetic art of alchemy. The Ordinall was originally written in English verse c.1477, and this manuscript is a late sixteenth century copy. Works deemed too controversial to be printed circulated furtively in such manuscript copies: the work was not printed in English until 1652. This copy is illustrated by six illuminated miniatures painted on vellum interleaved with the paper of the text. They show alchemists at work and include diagrams of equipment. The volume is from a large collection on alchemy amassed by John Ferguson.

Metempsychosis (Greek: μετεμψύχωσις), in philosophy, is the transmigration of the soul, especially its reincarnation after death. The term is derived from ancient Greek philosophy, and has been recontextualised by modern philosophers such as Arthur Schopenhauer, Kurt Gödel and Magdalena Villaba; otherwise, the term transmigration is more appropriate. The word plays a prominent role in James Joyce's Ulysses and is also associated with Nietzsche. Another term sometimes used synonymously is palingenesis.It is unclear how the doctrine of metempsychosis arose in Greece. It is easiest to assume that earlier ideas which had never been extinguished were used for religious and philosophic purposes. The Orphic religion, which held it, first appeared in Thrace upon the semi-barbarous northeastern frontier. Orpheus, its legendary founder, is said to have taught that soul and body are united by a compact unequally binding on either; the soul is divine, immortal and aspires to freedom, while the body holds it in fetters as a prisoner. Death dissolves this contract, but only to reimprison the liberated soul after a short time, for the wheel of birth revolves inexorably. Thus the soul continues its journey, alternating between a separate, unrestrained existence and fresh reincarnation, round the wide circle of necessity, as the companion of many bodies of men and animals. To these unfortunate prisoners Orpheus proclaims the message of liberation—that they stand in need of the grace of redeeming gods, Dionysus in particular—and calls them to turn to the gods by ascetic piety and self-purification: the purer their lives, the higher will be their next reincarnation, until the soul has completed the spiral ascent of destiny to live forever as a God from whom it comes. Such was the teaching of Orphism, which appeared in Greece about the 6th century BCE, organized itself into private and public mysteries at Eleusis and elsewhere, and produced copious literature.The earliest Greek thinker with whom metempsychosis is connected is Pherecydes of Syros, but Pythagoras, who is said to have been his pupil, is its first famous philosophic exponent. Pythagoras is not believed to have invented the doctrine or to have imported it from Egypt. Instead, he made his reputation by bringing the Orphic doctrine from northeastern Hellas to Magna Graecia and creating societies for its diffusion. The real weight and importance of metempsychosis in the Western tradition are due to its adoption by Plato.[10] In the eschatological myth that closes the Republic, he tells how Er, the son of Armenius, miraculously returned to life on the 12th day after death and recounted the secrets of the other world. After death, he said, he went with others to the place of Judgment and saw the souls returning from heaven, and proceeded with them to a place where they chose new lives, human and animal. He saw the soul of Orpheus changing into a swan, Thamyras becoming a nightingale, musical birds choosing to be men, and Atalanta choosing the honours of an athlete. Men were seen passing into animals and wild and tame animals changing into each other. After their choice, the souls drank of Lethe and then shot away like stars to their birth. There are myths and theories to the same effect in other dialogues, including the Phaedrus, Meno, Phaedo, Timaeus, and Laws.[citation needed] In Plato's view the number of souls was fixed; souls are never created, but only transmigrate from one body to another. Scholars have debated the extent of Plato's belief in metempsychosis since at least the Renaissance. Marsilio Ficino argued that Plato's references to metempsychosis were intended allegorically. Scholars have tended to agree with this assessment. Chad Jorgensen and Gerard Naddaf, for instance, agree with Ficino. But some recent scholars have come to doubt this view. For example, Campbell argues that Plato intends the theory of reincarnation to explain features of the world and animal life in the Timaeus, and in other dialogues, it is follows from various commitments that Plato argues for. "Metempsychosis" is the title of a longer work by the metaphysical poet John Donne, written in 1601. The poem, also known as the Infinitati Sacrum, consists of two parts, the "Epistle" and "The Progress of the Soule". In the first line of the latter part, Donne writes that he "sing[s] of the progresse of a deathlesse soule". Metempsychosis is a recurring theme in James Joyce's modernist novel Ulysses (1922). In Joycean fashion, the word famously appears in Leopold Bloom's inner monologue, recalling how his wife, Molly Bloom, apparently mispronounced it earlier that day as "met him pike hoses."

Reincarnation, also known as rebirth, transmigration, or metempsychosis (Greek) is the philosophical or religious concept that the non-physical essence of a living being begins a new life in a different physical form or body after biological death. In most beliefs involving reincarnation, the soul of a human being is immortal and does not disperse after the physical body has perished. Upon death, the soul merely becomes transmigrated into a newborn baby or an animal to continue its immortality. The term transmigration means the passing of a soul from one body to another after death. Reincarnation (punarjanma) is a central tenet of the Indian religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism; although there are Hindu and Pagan groups who do not believe in reincarnation, instead believing in an afterlife. In various forms, it occurs as an esoteric belief in many streams of Judaism, certain pagan religions including Wicca, and some beliefs of the Indigenous peoples of the Americas and Indigenous Australians (though most believe in an afterlife or spirit world). A belief in rebirth/metempsychosis was held by Greek historical figures, such as Pythagoras, Socrates, and Plato. Although the majority of denominations within Christianity and Islam do not believe that individuals reincarnate, particular groups within these religions do refer to reincarnation; these groups include the mainstream historical and contemporary followers of Cathars, Alawites, the Druze, and the Rosicrucians. The historical relations between these sects and the beliefs about reincarnation that were characteristic of Neoplatonism, Orphism, Hermeticism, Manichaenism, and Gnosticism of the Roman era as well as the Indian religions have been the subject of recent scholarly research.In recent decades, many Europeans and North Americans have developed an interest in reincarnation, and many contemporary works mention it. The Theosophical Society draws much of its inspiration from India. In the Theosophical world-view reincarnation is the vast rhythmic process by which the soul, the part of a person which belongs to the formless non-material and timeless worlds, unfolds its spiritual powers in the world and comes to know itself. It descends from sublime, free, spiritual realms and gathers experience through its effort to express itself in the world. Afterwards there is a withdrawal from the physical plane to successively higher levels of reality, in death, a purification and assimilation of the past life. Having cast off all instruments of personal experience it stands again in its spiritual and formless nature, ready to begin its next rhythmic manifestation, every lifetime bringing it closer to complete self-knowledge and self-expression. However it may attract old mental, emotional, and energetic karma patterns to form the new personality.Anthroposophy describes reincarnation from the point of view of Western philosophy and culture. The ego is believed to transmute transient soul experiences into universals that form the basis for an individuality that can endure after death. These universals include ideas, which are intersubjective and thus transcend the purely personal (spiritual consciousness), intentionally formed human character (spiritual life), and becoming a fully conscious human being (spiritual humanity). Rudolf Steiner described both the general principles he believed to be operative in reincarnation, such as that one's will activity in one life forms the basis for the thinking of the next, and a number of successive lives of various individualities. Similarly, other famous people's life stories are not primarily the result of genes, upbringing or biographical vicissitudes. Steiner relates that a large estate in north-eastern France was held during the early Middle Ages by a martial feudal lord. During a military campaign, this estate was captured by a rival. The previous owner had no means of retaliating, and was forced to see his property lost to an enemy. He was filled with a smoldering resentment towards the propertied classes, not only for the remainder of his life in the Middle Ages, but also in a much later incarnation—as Karl Marx. His rival was reborn as Friedrich Engels.

One of the greatest pleasures for me in visiting SFMOMA over the years is the building’s magnificent architecture designed by Mario Botta in his signature red brick style. The atrium, the skylight and, of course, the imposing open stairwell- rising in an Escher-esque block of striped black marble up to the iconic skylight and translucent catwalk- evoke Kubrickian spacecrafts and alien monoliths imparting transmutative knowledge in a code unknown.
With its alternating bands of smooth, reflective and course, non-reflective marbles, I loved how the stairwell also created banded, abstract reflections of the art and people throughout the museum. For example, see below in the comments for an image from ’09 of a Sol Lewitt painting neatly extended via the stairwell’s connective mirroring.
Of course, this will all change soon- is changing as I type this ode- nay, Eulogy- for this famous staircase, which will soon be demolished as part of SFMOMA's ambitious expansion plans. Mind you, I certainly don't begrudge this- I imagine that the new atrium design by Snøhetta will create a refreshing and exhilarating open space that I look forward to experiencing when the museum reopens in 2016 with 130,000 square feet of gallery space. (By then, a human probe will also have visited Pluto.)

“With SFMOMA’s expansion and renovation scheduled to start in 2013, I have been thinking about Swiss architect Mario Botta. Botta designed the current San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, which the Norwegian collective Snøhetta’s sleek new design will eventually gut and grow south and east to create a striated mesa-like mass. Botta’s red brick Third Street façade and black-and-white atrium tower will remain intact, but the current building’s stately formality, symmetric geometry, and byzantine flavor will be softened, and potentially overshadowed, by the pale new appendage looming behind it.
The expansion and alteration of Botta’s original design raises an interesting question about the value of boundaries — specifically, what stands to be gained by opening static situations to new influences. This question is not specifically architectural, and takes on extra weight when it leaps across disciplinary lines. Because the pending alteration of Botta’s design prompted this query, I thought it fitting that I poke at the question using Botta’s work, but not only the building he designed to be the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art….”

Indeed, I have come to praise this stairwell as much to bury it. Although absurd thoughts of its preservation have jested at me- the stairwell standing alone in some empty field or on a desert plain- perhaps reassembled temporarily at Burning Man- but it seems far better remembered as a so-called “ruin.” For perhaps it is only now, as it merges into the twin spheres of personal memory and cultural history, that I can truly express my love for it. As Jacques Derrida wrote in Acts of Religion, 2002):
"Ruin is not a negative thing. First, it is obviously not a thing. One could write... a short treatise on the love of ruins. What else is there to love, anyway? One cannot love a monument, a work of architecture, an institution as such except in an experience itself precarious in its fragility: it has not always been there, it will not always be there, it is finite. And for this very reason one loves it as mortal, through its birth and its death, through one's own birth and death, through the ghost or the silhouette of its ruin, one's own ruin [sa ruine]--which it already is, therefore, or already prefigures. How can one love otherwise than in this finitude?"
With a final visit descent of the staircase in mind, we managed to squeeze into the museum during the final hours of its closing celebration on June 2, and joined a ritualistic farewell processional designed by artist Desirée Holman, which wound from the fifth floor sculpture garden down through the atrium to wrap around the building. Thus, the following surrealist mash-up, which is my own, spontaneous goodbye to Botta’s stairway to Heaven.

Is extinction forever? This work seeks to generate a reflection on the increasingly possible cloning of extinct species. Since the origin of life, evolution has never returned to a vanished species. However, human science is about to break this rule. Is it ethical and moral to play gods? Through scientific reproductions of a neanderthal and a saber-toothed tiger that emerge from the earth (extinction) to cross a DNA helix and reach our present with a paleo-reconstruction where the visitor can interact and then go through a series of circles that forms the geometry of life arrive at a mythical alebrije that represents the transmutation of our matter.

'Floating Satellites' is an audiovisual interactive installation where position data of a series of artificial satellites orbiting around the planet earth is fed into the interactive system and used for graphic visualizations and sound control.
The orbits of the satellites around the planet earth act like a visual sequencer, and when the satellites cross specific coordinates events are triggered into the audiovisual generation system.

Benny "the Jet" Urquidez vs. Shinobu Onuki
Tokyo, Japan - April 29, 1978
Urquidez vs. Onuki - This bout concluded in round 3 when Onuki dislocated his shoulder from a throw by Urquidez. Urquidez was responding to a perceived attempt at a chokehold by Onuki. Judo throws, however, were illegal under Japanese rules though they were thought legal by the Americans under the mixed-rules for the bout. Urquidez was disqualified at the time of the bout. Under protest, given that “Tiger Mask” Saturo Sayama had been permitted to use every imaginable pro-wrestling throw in his bout against Marc Costello, the All Japan Kick-Boxing Association then transmuted the disqualification to a no-contest. Afterwards, for all future international title bouts, the Americans agreed to give up throws and the Japanese agreed to give up clinch-fighting. This understanding solidified the so-called International Rules pioneered by the WKA. In October 1981, when the AJKBA merged with the WKA, the WKA officially transmuted this disqualification to a TKO victory for Urquidez.
Onuki fought Urquidez again in Las Vegas January 26, 1980 but Urquidez won that fight by knockout in round 7 with a devastating left hand body shot.
My work, photo based images and videos, addresses the common experience of dwelling in the rotting and evolving urbanity today.

Our common existence is framed by the continuum of space and time. The absorption of unique experiences generated by these quantum variables, layers and marks the personal journey.
Wall construction emerged in our cultural vernacular as a basic means to physically organize, protect and define our sense of space. Transmogrified by the passage of time, this flat surface partition becomes embedded with intimate meaning – marks of a collective presence. And so, this wall, a two-dimensional division, becomes the very membrane broken to explore the layers of our personal and collective psyche by excavating the substance beneath structure. To slowly, methodically and meditatively deconstruct this architectural barrier of paint, plaster and wooden slats, the skeleton and anatomy of our joint experience is explored through this exposition. The process of creation and destruction is not simply about addition with equal subtraction. Instead, this work, deploying the theatrics of removal and des destruction attends to experiential evolution; an ongoing developmental change transmuting and subjugating both space and time.

999 : visite initiatique au coeur de la Demeure du Chaos insufflée par l'Esprit de la Salamandre

3 mois de travail jour et nuit, une "dream team" hors du commun, un grand merci à ACS, Luc, mon fidèle Géant qui poserait un 38 T. sur un balcon (cqfd Thierry Loir) Thomas, Cart'1, Goin et bien sûr Marc pour les peintures.
Je suis arrivé à poser mon installation de 99 sculptures d'acier brut avec un cahier des charges de ouf, aucune des 3600 œuvres de la DDC ne devaient être occultées, penser aux sources électriques, les passages d'eau, les voies de transport pour engin de chantier, les nacelles télescopiques (3m de large), protéger le grand public, respecter les normes ERP muséales, etc… Alterner en permanence monstration et effacement…
Sont-elles habitées ? Je l'ignore. Une chose certaine est que chacune, par les éléments alchimiques et les codes peints soit à l'antirouille soit volontairement avec des peintures dégradables par la rouille avec le temps, rend chaque sentinelle comme une sculpture unique. Cet automne chaque sentinelle va laisser apparaître, avec les pluies acides, différents niveaux de lecture, selon les peintures et solvants utilisés, les rendant singulières avec des stratifications que les archéologues des temps futurs décrypteront...
Mais mon défi le plus périlleux, était de créer une installation géante de 9000 m2 qui enveloppe, par des dizaines de tonnes d'acier, la Demeure du Chaos pour que mes visiteurs sur 360 degrés, plongent dans un univers onirique et fantasmagorique où les deux univers que sont la Demeure du Chaos d'une part et d'autre part l'installation des 99 sculptures monumentales (baptisées par une nuit très agitée "Sentinelles Alchimiques") s'entrecroisent selon l'Inframince définit par Marcel Duchamp (ou comment construire des intensités par soustraction).
Ces 99 Sentinelles Alchimiques sont désormais les gardiennes du Sanctuaire que représente la Demeure du Chaos. Je les ai conçus comme de véritable puits d’énergie quantique que je pose avec patience et sagesse sur l’ensemble de la Demeure du Chaos.
Elles sont au nombre de 99, faites d’acier brut de 10 mm (50 tonnes) soudées pour former un triangle équilatéral parfait. Chacun des 3 pans constituant une Sentinelle Alchimique, est lui même découpé pour laisser entrevoir une mystérieuse meurtrière, elle même en forme de triangle équilatéral, donnant ainsi une géométrie Euclidienne au regard du visiteur.
Ces 99 Sentinelles Alchimiques sont chacune à des points d’énergie particuliers de la Demeure du Chaos sur 9000 m2. Certaines se dissimulent par la végétation ou les reliefs naturels ou bien en écho aux autres œuvres, d’autres sont dans les espaces privatifs ou professionnels.
Dans mon travail alchimique démarré le 9 décembre 1999, les trois portes disposées en triangle équilatéral, dont un sommet est dirigé vers le haut, forment le delta lumineux. Elle sont les trois corps sur lesquels l’alchimiste va œuvrer. Ces trois corps sont le soufre, le mercure et le sel.
Soulignons que les trois corps présents dans la Materia Prima ou Chaos alchimique sont étroitement mélangés. Le triangle de point est aussi la marque des philosophes par le feu.
Le triangle équilatéral reposant sur sa base, à la manière des trois points, est le symbole de l’élément feu, l’un des quatre éléments avec lequel l’alchimiste travaille au laboratoire.
Les propriétés géométriques du triangle équilatéral relèvent de la perfection absolue par sa force spirituelle, son symbolisme de la nuit des temps notamment dans l’ancienne Egypte, il est force, beauté et harmonie.
Elles resteront durant mille ans comme les témoins d’une civilisation disparue par la folie des hommes

These charms don't mean anything in particular but the colors hint at the idea of transmuting one metal to another.
I like fluidity of the charms on the very regular and angular structure of the milled links that make up the chain.
The other thing I like about this piece is the sounds it makes when handled or worn; most of the charms sound like silver bells.
I used Fire, Water and Gravity to make this bracelet
