Transcendence sees the dual perceptions of reality by sight and reality by faith ...
.. Quotes by Patricia Bechthold
Subject: Transcendence
Medium: Digital Artwork.
Inspiration: I was having difficulties processing some issues I was hung up on. The struggle brought out some dark feelings and petty actions. I wanted to focus on moving past this and focusing on a new path to peace and goodness.
After a long series of flower images I wanted to counter-balance the recent part of my stream with something a bit more "muscular" but secretly just as full of transcendence and release as the obvious joy of blossoming flowers.
Some may find images of tombstones or graveyards to be morbid and they have my total respect and acknowledgement. I do, however, have a side that needs to take a deep breath and stare right into the face of our supposed mortality.
Out of years of travel and deep exposure to both Hindu and Tibetan cultures, I wonder whether our demise from this mortal coil is permanent or not.
If, as these cultures suggest, and their arguments are very cogent to me, that death is just a portal, a passing through, that the soul, like energy is eternal, then this Dance of Death ( Toten Tanz in German ) is an illusion - a powerful one at that, especially for those of us left on THIS side awaiting that experience.
There are very powerful emotions connected to this subject and it is not my intention to offend in any way. It's almost a taboo subject but my personal make-up needs to ask the tough questions and I see my role as a serious artist as needing to give expression to those questions sometimes.
This is #1 of a series of 3. I saved them for a Spring / Summer "release", for a time when we're much happier and delighted with the beauty of the world. There's an irony in them as they were shot in the Spring of 2015, when life is "returning" and so they carry a kind of secret balance and hidden celebration of "life".

My attempt here was to conjure themes of mortality, ritual, and transcendence through its curated symbolism and dramatic lighting. The crucifix and rosary evoke spiritual devotion, while the skull crowned with a melting candle suggests the passage of time and inevitable decay. The thurible introduces a liturgical element, hinting at purification or the presence of the divine. its presence adds a potent layer of symbolism. The priest’s collar encircling the crucifix visually binds institutional faith to personal sacrifice. It’s not just a garment; it’s a signifier of clerical authority, devotion, and spiritual duty. By wrapping it around the crucifix, the composition suggests a merging of human vocation with divine suffering—perhaps even a commentary on the burden of spiritual leadership or the tension between dogma and transcendence.
The circular form of the collar also echoes themes of eternity and enclosure, reinforcing the idea of ritual cycles and the inescapable nature of mortality and redemption. Its stark whiteness against the darker tones draws the eye, acting as both halo and shackle—depending on how one reads the scene. It’s a subtle but powerful gesture that deepens the narrative and invites theological reflection. The red light painting casts a somber, almost infernal glow, intensifying the gothic mood and drawing attention to the textures of metal, bone, and wax. Each object feels deliberately placed, inviting the viewer to contemplate the tension between sacred and profane, permanence and impermanence. The composition’s stark contrasts and symbolic layering create a visual meditation on death, faith, and the mysteries that lie beyond the veil.
We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.
-T.S. Eliot, Four Quartets
Soon the fog will lift
And the sun will
Tear into
Another day.
Reaching into
The infinite
Beyond oneself,
The space on
The other side,
Is limitless
In its nothingness
And I long to close
The door.
"Transcendence": 11 foot (3.3m) long outdoor sculpture by Keith Jellum located in South Park Building at Downtown Portland (At SW "Salmon" St :-P)
In Portland you can find art everywhere! And I love it.
Some thoughts on pain for those who might need this today:
You are not your pain, in the same way that you are not your illness. It is something you have, separate from who you are. It is not your identity.
Pain is inevitable. Suffering is a choice. Life is filled with times when we feel pain, either physical or emotional. Suffering comes from what we tell ourselves about that pain and how much control we allow it to have. When we give into the anxiety, when we hyperfocus on it, when we tell ourselves that it’s unbearable, we feed the monster. We can refuse to let it have control over our emotions. We can cry and move through things. We can live with our pain and still lead happy, fulfilled, productive lives.
Pain is a messenger. It shows up to tell us to pay attention to something. It has much to teach us about our bodies, our boundaries, and our needs. It’s not the enemy. It is a symptom of something else. Listen to your pain. Ask it what you need to know. Sometimes it is a message to slow down. Sometimes it’s a message to move, to stretch, to change positions. Sometimes it’s a message that you need to eliminate something from your life. Sometimes it’s a message to express hidden truths, to have a good cry, to accept and forgive. Sometimes it’s a message to go outside, take a slow walk, and experience the wonder in the natural world. Sometimes it just wants you to make a nice cup of tea, listen to some soothing music, and take a warm bath.
Pain is a teacher. It tells us how far we can go. It teaches us how strong we are. It teaches us that we have choices in how we perceive and interpret things. It teaches us that it is but one part of our story. It teaches us about cycles and rhythms in life. It teaches us to pay attention to nuances, that everything in life exists in varying shades of grey. It teaches us about transcendence.
Pain isn’t to be feared or avoided. It exists for a reason. I’m grateful for my pain and all that it has taught me. The hardest things we go through become our best teachers.
A bit more Portlandia, a wonderful 11 foot (3.3m) long sculpted Salmon made of hand forged and welded bronze at the corner of Salmon Street and Park Avenue in downtown Portland. Titled Transcendence and sculpted by Keith Jellum.
Let the light guide you on your walk. Fear no evil for nothing will be brought against you that you cannot handle. Within the light we are everything and without the light we are nothing.

A BIG thanks to Suriblossom for taking a picture with me!
Revisiting a location which I last photographed a year ago during London's annual Open House weekend, this is the stunning 10-storey atrium inside Allen & Overy's headquarters at One Bishops Square.
Having previously photographed a look-up of Jason Bruges Studios' spectacular "Pixel Cloud" installation, it was fun to figure out a different perspective that would convey the sheer size and scale of the atrium. The staff were incredibly gracious about allowing me to set up a gorillapod at one end of the walkway, and this image was taken at a moment when a fellow photographer and friend paused along the walkway to capture the atrium on her phone.
The result is a combination of seven exposures blended in Photoshop using luminosity masks, with darker exposures to tone down the highlights overhead and brighter exposures to bring out the nuances in the building's beautiful geometry, which could be seen along every panel of glass in the shadows. The installation's 624 globes constantly change colour to reflect the external light and weather conditions, and knowing that I would later tone the background with a shade of blue that had hints of cyan and green in its shadows, I waited for the LEDs to switch to their yellow-and-green phase. Using Adobe's Colour Themes Panel, I then found what I felt was the perfect complementary shade of blue to offset the yellow globes suspended inside the atrium, as well as the warm golden glow from the room at the opposite end of the walkway.
Having colour-graded the image, the final adjustments were made using Silver Efex Pro, where I selectively adjusted the structure of the building's glass and lowered the midtones, and finally Colour Efex Pro, where I applied a very sparing amount of the Dark Contrast and Darken/Lighten Centre filters, which brought out the shadow detail and lowered the intensity of the light along the upper storeys of the building.
My aim with this image was to emphasise the location's futuristic architecture and sheer scale, but I felt this was best achieved by focusing on the individual at the centre of the image, who seemed lost in thought while she was looking upwards and taking in the immense scope of the scene around her.

Dawn points, and another day
Prepares for heat and silence. Out at sea the dawn wind
Wrinkles and slides. I am here
Or there, or elsewhere. In my beginning.

I just edited this a bit so I could stick it in my portfolio. got rid of (or made less apparent) the tail-like thing under my bum, suspending me in the air. also messed with the stones to make them sharper. changed the tones, making it a big cooler overall.
anyway. yeah. I am not in Philadelphia because the person I was going to see was called in to work extra shifts today AND tomorrow... he's a chef de partie... god dammit.

It's been a while and a lot has happened since my last upload. You may have noticed that Flickr launched its first annual Flickr20under20 – an initiative that celebrates 20 of the world’s most extraordinary young photographers on Flickr. I am fortunate enough to say that I was chosen by a panel of very talented judges and am one of these artists. I stayed in NYC for eleven days and got back home early this morning. I had one of the best weeks of my life.
I exhibited my work at Milk Studios, in one of my favourite cities, alongside photographers I have looked up to since I started photography, some of whom I now consider as friends. It was a crazy week and honestly felt like and even now still feels like a dream. #Flickr20under20 will be an experience I will never forget and has truly opened my eyes as to how much I really want to pursue this passion. I can't thank you all enough for your constant support - Flickr has changed my life. I'll make sure to share a blog post about my adventures but for now, I'll start posting some photographs I took on my trip!
Qualche volta mi chiedo: se potessi
tornare indietro, da capo, rifarei
tutto quello che ho fatto, quegli stessi
miei dolcissimi errori, e cercherei
ancòra i viali d'ombra che concessi
ai miei sensi? Per quali falsi dei
quand'ero ricco di tempo, quei miei
anni ho perduto come se credessi
immortale la vita? Ed ecco cedo
al rimpianto che è nebbia, non placato
nella strada in discesa dove vedo
tutte disperse al vento le mie voglie.
E sono come un albero bruciato
che non ha più memoria delle foglie.

after learning more about raw files i used layering and masking in photoshop to obtain results similar to what photomatix can produce. i like this method because it gives me quite a bit more flexibility.
