This is the first real flower of spring in the yard except a few dandelions. He came up and is blooming right next to some landscape blocks in a barren flower bed. It is the showcase of the garden at the present time.

Governor Josh Shapiro joined U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Michael S. Regan, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Acting Secretary Jessica Shirley, President of the Allegheny-Fayette Labor Council Darrin Kelly and local elected leaders to celebrate the Shapiro Administration securing nearly $400 million to fund efforts to help Pennsylvania companies lower climate emissions while creating good-paying jobs and supporting Pennsylvania's economy.

EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan announced that the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has been selected to receive a more than $396 million grant for the Reducing Industrial Sector Emissions in Pennsylvania (RISE PA) project - 10% of the federal funds available for this program nationwide, making Pennsylvania one of the largest grant winners in the country. The RISE PA program is a part of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's application to the EPA's Climate Pollution Reduction Grant (CPRG) program, part of the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act.

"My Administration is taking real action to address climate change while continuing to create energy jobs and grow the economy - and today, I'm proud to announce that thanks to our partnership with the Biden-Harris Administration, Pennsylvania has been awarded $396 million in federal funding to start a new initiative called RISE PA," said Governor Josh Shapiro. "This is one of the largest federal grants Pennsylvania has ever received, and through RISE PA, we will offer grants for companies working to make their operations more efficient. This investment will help us reduce toxic air pollution, create thousands of jobs, invest in our energy sector, and continue Pennsylvania's legacy of energy leadership."

How to Read 50+ Books This Year

The benefits of voracious reading come in all shapes and sizes — from improving empathy and brain functioning to reducing stress and anxiety.

Even so, according to the Pew Research Center, 27 percent of Americans didn’t read a single book in 2015. Of those...

From the exhibition

Impressionists on Paper: Degas to Toulouse-Lautrec

(November 2023 - March 2024)

Degas, Cézanne, Morisot, Van Gogh. You might recognise their paintings, but it’s their radical works on paper we put the spotlight on in this ground-breaking exhibition.

In the whirl of modernity that was late 19th-century France, Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists radically transformed the future direction of art. But it wasn’t just through their paintings. In a subtle but seismic shift, they lifted the status of works on paper – drawings, pastels, watercolours, temperas, gouaches – from something preparatory that you left in a studio, to artworks in their own right.

In this rich exhibition, we bring together 77 works on paper by leading Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists whose innovation would challenge traditional attitudes and ultimately pave the way for later movements like Abstract Expressionism...

...The enduring popularity of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art is mainly due to the celebrated paintings by artists such as Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Vincent van Gogh and Paul Cézanne. Drawings, pastels, watercolours, temperas and gouaches by these artists have historically received less attention. The examples in this exhibition, gathered from collections across Britain and Europe, reveal how Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works on paper are as significant as paintings.

Since its foundation in 1648, the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture had exerted official control over artistic practices and standards in France, as well as determining what subjects should be depicted.

Despite reforms, by the nineteenth century the Académie’s authority was being challenged by artists. The emphasis previously placed on drawing for the purposes of training or solely as part of the preparatory process for finished work was regarded as far too restrictive.

Avant-garde artists such as the Impressionists saw that works on paper had a wider potential, especially given their preference for contemporary subject matter and their aesthetic principles based on light and colour. Although they did not totally renounce working in their studios or using models, these artists increasingly sought inspiration directly from nature, modern life and the careful observation of individuals. Furthermore, they readily adopted new approaches including the selection and use of media, supports, techniques and formats.

This greater freedom encouraged the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists to make independent works on paper for exhibition or sale. This was how, by the end of the nineteenth century, drawing achieved parity with painting and played an important role in the developments of modern art.

Day seven of our Norway Trip.

👉 Free Northern Norway Guide Book PDF with all our tips, tricks, best hotels, places to visit and more. bit.ly/MyNorwayGuide

Today was such a fun day, we went snowshoeing and ice fishing in Alta Norway with a company called GLOD Explore and we even had our own personal husky.

We started our day at our hotel the Scandic Alta with some breakfast before driving to GLOD Explore. At GLOD Explore we got kitted up and met all the huskies. Our husky for the day was called Atlas.

We drove from GLOD Explore to a nearby mountain where we started our snowshoeing adventure.

First we snowshoed about 30 minutes were we came to a viewpoint at the top of a hill that overlooked Kafjorden Fjord (this was the anchorage of the German battleship Tirpitz for much of World War II).

We then went down to the lake where we started ice fishing. We needed to drill our own holes first. after trying for a while the only person to catch a fish was Holly. Our guide then prepared it and cooked it in a Lavu on the shores of the fjord we were fishing on.

After that we trekked back to the car and went back to GLOD Explore, all together the experience was around five hours long and I would recommend it as it was a lot of fun.

We then drove to Bjornfjell Mountain lodge where I had rented a cabin for the next two nights. At Bjornfjell Mountain Lodge we played in the snow and in a snow house someone had dug into the snow and then went to a local grill for our dinner.

We were really happy here and our cabin was great with amazing views over the ski resort.
