Can greylag geese be white?
It can be white, completely gray (like the wild form), or somewhere in-between.
Are greylag geese native to UK?
There are two subspecies of Greylag Goose recognised: Western Greylag A. a. anser from Iceland, and north and central Europe; wintering from Scotland, south to northern Africa and east to Iran.
The greylag goose is a large, bulky, goose with a big head, and the largest of the grey goose species. It was one of the first species of animals to be domesticated in Ancient Egypt about 3000 years ago and is a typical farmyard goose. The domestic breed is known as A. a. domesticus and can interbreed with Anser anser. Many birds seen in the UK outside of the winter months are re-colonised from domestic populations and are often semi-tame. It is seen as a pest due to overgrazing of agricultural crops and is listed in Schedule 2 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act, meaning it can be killed or taken outside of the close season.
Key facts Scientific name: Anser anser
Status: Resident wild and feral populations, winter visitor.
Breeding birds: 46,000 pairs UK wintering birds: 140,000 British birds and 88,000 from Iceland
Conservation status: Amber Family: Ducks, geese & swans
Length: 76 – 90 cm Wingspan: 147 – 180 cm
Weight: 2.9 – 1.4 kg
Typical lifespan: 8 years

Sometimes a place makes you start smiling uncontrollably when you see it for the first time ever. We were only here for half an hour in a fierce and windy hangover from Storm Ciara, who by this time had moved on to batter other parts of the land before heading further east to trouble our friends in Scandinavia.
Point of Ayr Lighthouse sits on the North Wales coast, not far from the Dee estuary. Further research brought the surprising news that it was built as early 1776, and then even more surprising news that it fell into disuse nearly 140 years ago. I think it looks pretty good for its age, despite a visit with about 20 gallons of masonry paint being a tad overdue perhaps. Now privately owned, it has a reputation for being one of the most haunted buildings in Wales, with reports of a ghostly lighthouse keeper, possibly with a broken heart. If you've got a broken heart, a lighthouse might be a good place to stew in solitude I suppose. Especially one where you can nip out to get the shopping in at low tide.
The fact that this is the second of three images I'll be sharing from a single visit to this location is testimony to how engaging the place is. This one might be my own favourite, with the dunes blowing hazily as a frame to the subject and the high tide rolling in forcefully across the tiny remaining strip of exposed beach. Despite the strong wind, careful selection of a sheltered position and a sturdy tripod made it possible to use an ND filter and slow down the exposure time to catch the movement of both the dunes and the sea. It's a long way from home, but a location I've really fallen for and I'm already thinking about the compositions that might be on offer during low tide and dramatic light.
These photos taken on my trip to Europe and the UK with a girl friend in October to November 2012. My camera I had then wasn't good with low light so some of these shots are not great but I have put them as my memories of the trip.
On a visit to Elburg. We had a no rain but it was rather gloomy sort of day. Pity as yesterday was sunny
There is evidence of a Neolithic settlement at Elburg consisting of stone tools and pottery shards. From Roman times there are names and shards of earthenware which suggest that there was an army camp at the site of Elburg. The earliest extant written record of Elburg is from 796 AD.
Between 1392 and 1396 Elburg was rebuilt with a moat and a city wall, together with a gridiron street plan. This rapid rebuilding was expensive, indicating that Elburg was reasonably affluent in medieval times. Several records of Elburg date back to the 14th century. Elburg was granted town status probably by Count Otto II In the 13th century. There is a record that Elburg got its fishing right granted in 1313. In 1367 the city was recorded as a member of the Hanseatic League. At the end of the 16th century new moats and higher ramparts were built because of the improved war-techniques.

October always takes my husband and I to this beautiful park. We have had lots of rain recently and it brought a lot of the leaves down, but there was still some wonderful color to be seen :)
Thanks so much for taking a moment to view my photo! I appreciate it!
Could this room be saved from the slippery grip of Mr. Tad, the escaped terrarium toad? Or is this the end of our hero, the mighty Captain Flywing? Find out in the next Saturday episode of Buzzed Adventures Show! (buzzed on what?)
My entry to the final round of Biocup 2022! What a ride! I was very excited about this championship and especially this round, as I tried to find an interesting challenge for myself again. For example, an attempt to create a "live" comic book cover with an imitation of a distorted perspective: hands of different sizes, a large head and small legs, different pencils, etc. I really hope that I was able to achieve this illusion, because the posing was incredibly difficult, but at the same time insanely fun.
P.S. I know that the judges asked not to use your room as a background but I couldn't resist:) Thanks to Djokson for that idea. Originally I wanted it to be just hand-drawn.
I thought this tunnel looked very clinical - sort of like what I would imagine an asylum to look like!

Dedicated to Don ( www.flickr.com/photos/dgjean/ ) because hi can feel the magic of light which is difficult to capture with the camera but almost possible only with the heart.
I suppose this picture will not find the consideration of the most of you, because it does not respect all the rules of photography.
Neverthless I post it because I love and I’m fascinated and inspired so much by the light in all its appearances. I like this strong flash of light through a chimney and how this poor dark room is partly illuminated.

Contrary to the Blue Skimmer I photographed recently, this female Fiery Skimmer (Orthetrum villosovittatum) posed on a dry Kentia seed pod without hiding her pretty face :) /

We were able to play with this little lion cub at the Ukutula Conservation Center in South Africa. As adolescent cubs, they had sharp teeth and sharp claws when they pounced.

The barn to the right is a tobacco barn with its rectangular openings to control the temperature and humidity while the tobacco is cured, dried after being hung from rafters. The barn to the left cures some tobacco and stores equipment and supplies. Raising tobacco involves a lot dirty, sticky and hot work. Located in the western edge of Owen County in the Kentucky River Valley. The barns are painted a distinctive black to raise the temperature for curing tobacco
Love the patterns and reflections caused by this little stream cutting its way through the sand to the sea :)
A road side stop just south of the city of Grand Lake and Rocky Mountain National Park. The colors of the leaves were a sight in the late afternoon as the sunlight came through the clouds. Anywho, I was able to take several captures of this setting. This was my favorite without cars on the road. Just an empty highway with colorful leaves and mountains beyond. A beautiful Autumn setting in the Colorado Rockies!
Well, eye to camera!
OK, Henry might be a very uncooperative model, but I have got lots of shots I really like over the years. I just have to take hundreds in the hope that one comes out :-)

One way I check for Spring is to go to the local park and look for cherry blossoms… I found some this morning : )
________________________________________________
Allen's Hummingbird & Cherry Blossoms
In early spring, a narrow strip of scrub and chaparral along the Pacific Coast starts buzzing with the sights and sounds of the coppery and green Allen's Hummingbird. Males flash their brilliant reddish orange throat and put on an elaborate show for the females, swinging in pendulous arcs before climbing high into the sky and diving back down with a sharp squeal made by their tails. These early migrants mostly spend the winter in Mexico, but some stay in southern California year-round.
Male and female Allen's Hummingbirds use different habitats during the breeding season. The male sets up a territory overseeing open areas of coastal scrub or chaparral, where he perches conspicuously on exposed branches. The female visits these areas, but after mating she heads into thickets or forests to build a nest and raise the young.
The Allen's Hummingbird is a remarkably early migrant compared with most North American birds. Northbound birds may depart their wintering grounds as early as December, arriving on their breeding grounds as early as January when winter rains produce an abundance of flowers.
Like other birds, Allen's Hummingbirds use their feet to help control their body temperature. When it's cold outside they tuck their feet up against their bellies while flying, but when temperatures soar, they let their feet dangle to cool down.
The oldest recorded Allen's Hummingbird was at least 5 years 11 months old when she was captured and rereleased in California during banding operations in 2009. She had been banded in the same state in 2004.

On Sunday evening I was lucky to witness a very unusual sunset over Beeston Rylands. My usual view would be to photograph the setting sun over the River Trent, which is out of view to the right of this photograph, but the clouds in the direction of the setting sun were relatively flat and dull. Looking in the opposite direction, however, was this view of stunning pink clouds. The only down side, perhaps, was the lack of foreground interest, so I gave greater prominence to the sky, using the path to the right and muddy field for context.
This is sunrise from the promontory of Hurlestone Point, Exmoor and the ruined tower of the old coast guard's lookout station. There is a saying in photography circles that you cannot force a shot and that an image has to offer to be taken. This was one of those occasions as i was only out to complete a wildlife project and almost didn't grab the camera but as the dawn colours and sun emerged i saw an opportunity, quickly set up and took this one.

The chilly morning temperatures caused fog to rise over the relatively warm waters of the lake while the very first sunlight of the day lit up high cirrus clouds. These precursor clouds signalize the distant cyclone system coming in from the Pacific ocean bringing clouds and rain for several days to the Canadian Rockies. These mountains are geologically built up by alternating layers of limestone and shale that sedimented on an ancient ocean floor 245 to 363 million years ago. Compression of these once flat lying layers of 1300 m thickness each caused the sediments to break into huge slabs that tilted upwards into a system of repeating limestone and shale pattern. Each rock exposed to the surface is attacked by the erosive forces of weathering. The shale layer is a soft rock compared to the limestone. Hence glaciers, precipitation, frost and wind easily eroded the shale into deep valleys leaving the resistant tilted limestone behind as the Canadian Rocky Mountains we see today. These steep cliffs of Mt. Rundle were formed during the ice age by carving of glaciers and later by cutting of the Bow river. These sun rays lighting up the sky, reflecting in the lake and on the mountains in the morning quietude really was a moment to remember.

I was born to love no one
No one to love me
Only the wind in the long green grass
The frost in a broken tree.
I was made to love magic
All its wonder to know
But you all lost that magic
Many many years ago.
I was born to use my eyes
Dream with the sun and the skies
To float away in a lifelong song
In the mist where melody flies.

At the moment we're looking at the house and farm that English artist John Glover (1767-1849) built after he arrived in Van Diemen's Land in 1831. Here is a view of the remarkably restored "Patterdale" at Mills Plains (Deddington) in northern Tasmania. We are approaching the house - which is now used to accommodate visitors - from the rear. When the restoration started it had been a ruin for many years. Obviously the glassed area is a concession to modern tastes.
This is a very short introduction to John Glover from the NGV:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRvLGF7jJok
Here is a short video showing you a large range of his English and colonial paintings:
"Fair river! in thy bright, clear flow
Of crystal, wandering water,
Thou art an emblem of the glow
Of beauty -- the unhidden heart --
The playful maziness of art
In old Alberto's daughter;
But when within thy wave she looks --
Which glistens then, and trembles --
Why, then, the prettiest of brooks
Her worshipper resembles;
For in my heart, as in thy stream,
Her image deeply lies --
The heart which trembles at the beam
Of her soul-searching eyes."

I can't find this boat's name anywhere. But I think it's a former rescue boat of the volunteer rescue team Ægir in Garður. I guess it's been put aside as they now have a better boat.
I drive past this one on a regular basis and I've made several attempts to shoot it. I think this one is half decent, although it would have been better to get rid off the nasty shadow on the lower back side.
Edit: Inga S. has informed us that the boat's name is Gísli Jónsson and didn't belong to Ægir.
Note to self:
It's best to explore dark country dirt roads in the daylight before heading out to try to take night sky shots... because after driving an hour to get to the dark country road, and driving for 20 minutes on the dark country road, only to come to a giant sink hole the entire width of the road, filled with water.... causing you to turn around and drive another 20 minutes back to where you started.... you pretty much lose interest in taking night sky shots... and you decide that you really don't feel like standing out in the middle of a field all alone in the dark anymore anyway ... so you drive the hour back home thinking that maybe it's time you find someone else crazy enough to think that this sounds like a good idea (if such a person even exists) to drag along with you next time. Yeah... pretty much a wasted night.... so.... here's some flowers sitting on the railing of an abandoned farmhouse on the dark country road... before it got dark. Well, maybe it wasn't a total waste of time. ; )
