Material Systems: Digital Design and Fabrication

Exhibition dates: January 31 - March 11, 2022

Harvard University Graduate School of Design

in collaboration with the Ceramics Program, Office for the Arts at Harvard

This exhibit showcases the results of the Fall 2021 course Material Systems: Digital Design and Fabrication offered at the Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD). For over a decade, faculty from the GSD have collaborated with the Harvard Ceramics Program to offer an experiential learning opportunity for design students that links research and experimentation in emerging digital technologies with the context of ceramic material systems. The course combines technological developments relating to the way in which things are designed (digital modeling, simulation, generative design, etc.) and the way things are made (automation, computer-controlled equipment including robotics, advanced materials, etc.) in search of new opportunities. Each object exhibited here is the result of prototyping and experimentation during the pursuit of a research question – it represents a step in a process of exploration, rather than a finished product.

Course led by Professors Nathan King and Zach Seibold, assisted by Gabby Perry, Teaching Assistant

In consultation with Kathy King, Director, Geoff Booras, Operations Coordinator and Casey Zeng, Ceramics Program Staff

Featuring work by Harvard Graduate School of Design Students:

Saad Boujane, Trent Bullion, Shant Charoian, Danny Clarke, Amelia Gan, George Guida, Sarah Hopper, Dongyun Kim, Annabelle Li, Yang Sun Lim, Elsa Mendoza, Elissa Palmer, Devashree Shah, Wei Wu, Zhenyu Yang, Hye Jun Youn, and Ivan Zhang

The 2K22 Tunguska (Russian: 2К22 "Тунгуска"; English: Tunguska) is a Russian tracked self-propelled anti-aircraft weapon armed with a surface-to-air gun and missile system. It is designed to provide day and night protection for infantry and tank regiments against low-flying aircraft, helicopters, and cruise missiles in all weather conditions. Its NATO reporting name is SA-19 "Grison".

Development of the 2K22 anti-aircraft system began on 8 June 1970. At the request of the Soviet Ministry of Defence, the KBP Instrument Design Bureau in Tula, under the guidance of the appointed Chief Designer A. G. Shipunov, started work on a 30mm anti-aircraft system as a replacement for the 23mm ZSU-23-4.

The project, code-named "Tunguska", was undertaken to improve on the observed shortcomings of the ZSU-23-4 (short range and no early warning) and a counter to new ground attack aircraft in development, such as the A-10 Thunderbolt II, which was designed to be highly resistant to 23 mm cannons.

Studies were conducted and demonstrated that a 30 mm cannon would require from a third to a half of the number of shells that the 23 mm cannon of the ZSU-23-4 would need to destroy a given target, and that firing at a MiG-17 (or similarly at, in case of war, NATO's Hawker Hunter or Fiat G.91) flying at 300 m/s, with an identical mass of 30 mm projectiles would result in a kill probability 1.5 times greater than with 23 mm projectiles. An increase in the maximum engagement altitude from 2,000 to 4,000 m and increased effectiveness when engaging lightly armoured ground targets were also cited.

The initial requirements set for the system were to achieve twice the performance in terms of range, altitude and combat effectiveness of the ZSU-23-4, additionally the system should have a reaction time no greater than 10 seconds. Due to the similarities in the fire control of artillery and missiles, it was decided that the Tunguska would be a combined gun and missile system. A combined system is more effective than the ZSU-23-4, engaging targets at long-range with missiles, and shorter range targets with guns.

SALT LAKE CITY — L3 Communication Systems-West presented an in-kind donation to the Utah Guard Sub-for-Santa program Dec. 6 at the Salt Lake Armory.

According to Capt. Noé Vázquez, director of the Sub-for-Santa program, donations from private citizens and organizations like this will ensure a more meaningful Christmas for military families in Utah who have indicated a need for support this year. As of Dec. 5, the Utah Guard Family Support Services office projects helping about 300 children during the holiday.

The Utah Guard Sub-for-Santa program was originated in 2003 after many community members realized the sacrifices that our Utah servicemembers were performing. The intent of the community members was to give back to military families, with deployed members and who were in need. Last year, the Sub-for-Santa program assisted nearly 400 children in need. While this program specifically assists those dependents of our Utah military who might go without during a holiday season, the program does accept general gifts for the parents or family gifts.

Sub for Santa is dedicated to helping people who cannot help themselves. An application process verifies that the donations go to the families who need it most. Applicants are also given the tools and resources with learning opportunities to help them better manage their money, time, and talents from a Family Assistance Center.

Those wishing to make a donation to the Sub-for-Santa program can make payments online at the following link: utngtrust.org/charitable_trust_1_1/subForSanta.php.

What is this plant? I call it an L-system plant because its growth rules seem so obvious.

Update: Thanks to my mom and her colleagues at the Illinois Master Gardeners, this is surely Kalanchoe pinnatum (Crassulaceae), from the same genus (sometimes Bryophyllum) as this plant at the office.

I have always loved album art. My father has a whole treasure trove sitting in the closet and he won't let me "borrow" his Technics turntable from way back when (I plan on putting the albums up in my loft soon). I've always been into music because of him and that glorious marvel that WAS MTV as a kid in the 80s. And growing up I always worked and had extra cash to blow at Lou's Records, Just Play Music, or whatever place I could get my fix.

I loved the art, the liner notes, the thank yous, etc. It killed me when my first book of 200 CDs (and guitar) was stolen out of my car while working at Legoland living Kevin Spacey's dream. Home owners insurance covered the stolen discs IF I sent in the album covers. At which point I went on a massive spending spree, only to find them ripped off again by the crackheads in Home Depots parking lot while I returned their stolen goods for cash. Insurance covers again and drops me. Go on another binge... Only to have that book stolen again when ghetto rats threw spark plugs through my car window. Such a vicious cycle. Obviously I don't bring all my CDs anymore (but I don't own an iPod).

Well, this is what I have left and the collection keeps growing thanks to Used CDs online for under $10. Now it's all a pile in the corner of my room until I figure out how I'm going to put this mess up on my wall.

Fuck Bush, Cheney, and all the war criminals current and former in that vile institution we call Washington.

Vote Ron Paul. Vote Kucinich. Vote for anything but politics as usual.
