If you've ever used a backdrop before, whether it's for Solid Color or Decorative pattern, paper or cloth background materials, you know that the versatility, adjustability, and strength of the support system hardware makes all the difference in setting up your studio to get the shot just right.

The background support system used in the photo above will allow you to precisely adjust the width of the Crossbar between the Stands so that you can attach clamps from the Stand to the Background Material. This minimizes floor space and is especially critical when using cloth backgrounds that require stretching to create a smooth surface. Having the ability to adjust the height of the support is also essential. Another handy feature of a background support system is the ability to mount more that one backdrop.

A background support system that has these kind of features can be purchased from Eos Lighting LLC

Donald Meeker (American, b. 1947) and Christopher O’Hara (American, b. 1968) and Jeffery Smith (American, b. 1964), Meeker & Associates, James Montalbano (American, b. 1953), Terminal Design Inc. Human-factors research: Philip Garvey and Martin Pietrucha, The Larson Transportation Institute at Pennsylvania State University, and Susan T. Chrysler, Texas Transportation Institute. United States, 2004–present.

Few people slow down to consider the design of road signs, yet most of us interact with them every day. Since the 1940s, the U.S. Federal Highway Administration has used a standard typeface, commonly known as Highway Gothic. Graphic designer Donald Meeker, working with typeface designer James Montalbano and a team of human factors scientists and other experts, have spent over fifteen years trying to replace Highway Gothic with something better. Approaching the project with passion and zeal, they have struggled against a far-flung and recalcitrant bureaucracy.

What’s wrong with Highway Gothic? The open spaces in the characters, such as the bowl of the lowercase “a,” are too small, making the letters hard to read, especially at night, when headlights hit the reflective surface of the sign and make the text blurry. This effect, called halation, causes the cramped open spaces in Highway Gothic to look even smaller, making it difficult for drivers—especially older drivers to distinguish among different letterforms. Making the letters bigger to accommodate older drivers would address the problem, but it would also mean manufacturing larger signs. Bigger signs would generate more visual clutter as well as enormous infrastructure costs.

Meeker and Montalbano created Clearview, a set of elegant, readable letterforms optimized for distance reading. The characters have enlarged counters, yet occupy no more space than Highway Gothic. After dozens of iterations and rigorous testing, Clearview received interim approval from the FHWA in 2004, and over twenty states are now using it for various applications. The struggle to transform the nation’s signage, however, is far from over. The designers are now testing characters for use in darkon- light conditions and developing a proportional grid system for creating more consistent, logically arranged signs. They released road sign versions of Clearview in Cyrllic, Greek, and extended Latin in 2009.

Watkins-Johnson (WJ) Adate 1500 system. Originally introduced in the early 1980's by WJ Palo Alto, the ADATE system was used to test Timex watches.

I was excited to see something marked as Chessie System (aka Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad) in the small town of Thurmond WV. Looks like this chunk of steel was produced in November of 1984, which would make it around 37 years old as of this writing. Pretty wild that it's held up to all the railroad traffic through the years.

A Space for Thoughts von Esther Stocker (*1974

Schlanders, IT, lebt in Wien, AT).

Fasziniert

von Ordnungssystemen und «der Vagheit exakter

Formen» greift Stocker in ihrer Arbeit seit Jahren

Stocker dazu: «In meinen Bildern,

hinterfragen.»

During the 2019–2020 Cold-Air Outbreaks in the Marine Boundary Layer Experiment (COMBLE) in northern Norway, ARM used its Aerosol Observing System (AOS) to measure aerosol optical properties. The primary goal of COMBLE was to understand more about shallow convective cloud formations that start at the Arctic Ocean’s ice edge during cold-air outbreaks and evolve as they progress over open water.
