Did a test on my D300 to determine how well it defines its 'zones' shot from -5EV to +4EV. Top number is EV (Exposure compensation), mid is the correlating zone, bottom is % black (100% is black, 0% is white, etc).

What this means to you: Ansel Adams developed (along with a partner) the Zone System that systematically labels areas of relative brightness as 'zones'. it consists of 10 zones, 0-IX, that gradually increase in brightness from black to white.

Zone 0 is black and (-5EV on exposure compensation) holds no detail.

You can have fully textured shadows at zone III (-2EV)

Zone V is middle grey (this is where your camera tries to put EVERY exposure. ew.)

Zone VII is the brightest zone that will hold detail. VIII retains very very little information and IX is pure white (the sun, specular highlights, etc)

If you previsualize your scene with these zones in mind, you can reproduce an image that matches your vision without a lot of tweaking in post processing. Who wants to photoshop every one of their images anyway?

When I use the system, i use my spot meter (the dot) and generally either A) choose my darkest shadow and put it in zone II (-3EV), that ensures the shadow retains minor details, or B) in bright scenes (or really contrasty mid day sun), Ill find the brightest surface I want to keep detail in and set it as zone VII (+2EV). This ensures I dont blow out (pure white) a white shirt in the sun.

It's up to you what's most important. The important part is utilizing your spot meter and thinking creatively.

Conclusion: separation between zone VIII and IX is very slight, otherwise, the camera did a great job metering and recording every zone fairly accurately. And who doesn't love knowing that your camera's dynamic range spans over 8 stops. :)

This is a cropped version of a view of a mummy seen at San Francisco's Legion of Honor Museum with the use of a virtual dissection table provided by Anatomage, a San Jose California medical solutions company. Its state-of-the-art technology renders the data from the CT scans provided by Stanford University School of Medicine's department of radiology into three-dimensional interactive images. Anatomage's innovative anatomy visualization system allows you to rotate and slice into the simulated mummies to discover the secrets within their wrappings. That was the information statement that explained what we could see in the glass display case of the virtual dissection table. Quite an experience - being able to see a mummy without removing its delicate wrappings. I shot this with my Canon Powershot SX50 aet at 1/125 second since the display case was already well lighted though the rest of the museum room was dimly lighted.

When I loaded this onto my computer I realised that I should have taken a meter reading from the sign in the foreground rather than relying on the matrix metering. As a result the bright buildings in the background looked fine but the foreground was much too dark. Using the ACR RAW converter I was able to push the exposure by three stops to get the foreground looking right. This is one of the great things about shooting in RAW mode! But of course the background was now completely overexposed. I duplicated the "pushed" version, then made another RAW conversion - this time without adjusting the exposure. I then put these two images on 2 layers, added a layer mask to the brighter one and then painted on the mask with a soft brush to show the original image beneath.

I've since found this technique is called Dynamic Range Increase.

13 element FM with great gain and F/B ratio, discontinued from Antenna Performance Systems.

The system is based on 6 bike stations, respectively staffed by two employees in two shifts. Ecovolis program has proven successful in dramatically increasing bicycle use in Tirana, which, formerly, was a city without a developed bicycle culture. Ecovolis program is the first project in Albania that provides low-income adults with commuter bicycles as well as a donating program for children bicycles. The program recently completed two major steps, opening new bike stations in the city of Durrës and integrating Tourist Information Point Service to the bicycles stations' structure.

History

The Tirana Community Bicycle Albania project won financial support from the George Soros Open Society Foundation Albania (OSFA). An even larger contribution came from the US-based Pedal for Progress organization, which donated 450 bicycles. Sixty of these were used road bikes, which were modified and painted by local technicians to serve as public bikes in the Ecovolis scheme. Another portion was set aside to donate to children and to activists and volunteers at PASS. Still another portion were diverted to the project's Eco Bicycle Shop, a social enterprise which sells bikes for USD 50-150 and reinvests profits for the service and maintenance of Ecovolis bicycles. The main objective of the program was to introduce the community to an inexpensive, environmental friendly form of transport -- the bicycle; to sell used bikes at low prices; to donate bikes to the children of needy families and to PASS volunteers; to establish a bike sharing-scheme in the city (Ecovolis); and to employ financially disadvantaged people and young students to operate the bike-sharing scheme.

System

Each Ecovolis station is staffed by two employees in two shifts and contains 30 -- 60 bicycles. In order to use the bicycles it is required to provide a personal identification document (such as passport or ID card) or by subscribing to the Ecovolis membership Card.

The first black and red bicycles, (also the colors of the Albanian flag) were donated from US-organization Pedal for Progress, (which collect and donate used bicycles). As these bicycles were of different types, converting them for safe and comfortable public use took months of work. The price per bicycle varies from 60 US$ to 90 US$ each. The bicycle is equipped with a front bicycle basket, a behind carrier, a comfortable saddle and a public fender with the Ecovolis sign.

The bicycle stations also provide touristic information to the visitors and a list of the city attractions. Moreover, being a non-profit social enterprise, during particular days the program offers free bicycle service, cycling courses, donations of bicycles and helmets for children in need, bike tours and a bicycle recycle program.
