The Chesser family settled in the Okefenokee in the late 1850s and lived there for about 100 years. The current homestead was build in 1927. Chesser family descendants still live in Southeast Georgia today.

We first tried to go to the Okefenokee Swamp in 1985 but were told it was closed due to a drought. In 2004, we considered trying go there again on another vacation through the Southeast, but it had been another dry year. Finally, in 2018, we were able to go.

The horses take folks on tours, but also are used to work sugaring the maples.

There is NO other subsitute for Golden Syrup.

To make maple syrup from maple sap, you have to reduce the sap by a factor of 40 to 50 times! The first step in making maple syrup from maple sap (actually the second step; the first step is tapping the trees and collecting the sap, but I don't have pictures of that) is boiling the sap in bulk. This removes most of the water by evaporation. Here, my dad's friend Bob supervises the reduction of sap into crude syrup.
