Natur-Park Schöneberger Südgelände

Berlin, Dezember 2013

Schoeneberger Suedgelaende Nature Park

Berlin, December 2013

Schoeneberger Suedgelaende ("Schoeneberg's Southern Area") is a public park (180,000 square meters) on the site of a former switchyard in the centre of Berlin.

After final closing of Anhalter Bahnhof in May 1952 all departing railway tracks were deconstructed and parts of the switchyard Tempelhof were put out of service. The remaining parts were used by the East German "Deutsche Reichsbahn".

Nature took over in the disused areas, and in 1995 the Deutsche Bahn handed the area over to the City of Berlin.

In 1999 the area opened as park and nature reserve and was a Worldwide Project of EXPO 2000.

Over the years a unique cultural landscape of untamed nature, the relics of old railway technology and modern art has evolved in the heart of Berlin.

Commissioned by International Power in 2000, Pelican Point uses natural gas from the Moomba gasfields in South Australia supplied by the Moomba to Adelaide pipeline (MAP) and gas from Port Campbell and Iona in Victoria supplied by the SEA Gas (South East Australia) pipeline. It operates two Alstom GT13E2 gas turbine generators and one steam turbine generator.

The entrance area. The signal box is located behind the large glass front. This is unusual for a signal box because these systems are sensitive installations with monitored doors and access recording. But this interlocking system does not serve the train traffic and is used for the train composition in the shunting station. Switzerland, Oct 3, 2019. (3/26)

Apparently hump can also be understood as: a mound over which railroad vehicles are pushed so as to run by gravity to the required place in a switchyard.
