294 674 is working at Hamburg Hohe Schaar switchyard. The locomotive was built in 1968. It's 49 years old now, which is appr. the same age last steam locos at East Germany had. 50 3145 (flic.kr/p/ZcdLR3) and 86 1501 (flic.kr/p/Vp2kun) were both the last ones of their classes in regular service. Both were built in 1942, hence they were 45 and 46 years old in their last year of regular service.

46 Jahre alt.

A nice weekend day in March of 1982 finds this view at Bensenville, IL. On the mainline, a westbound Milwaukee District West Line train behind F40C #45 has three bilevels in tow as they are about to cross York Road. Up ahead will be his stop at the Bensenville depot. On yard lead is a pair of MP15s, led by the 491, as they are dragging a cut of cars out for the the hump. The commuter engine was renumbered as the Metra 605 and has long since been retired but the old MILW 491 still soliders on. Renumbered to the Soo 1557 it served around Bensenville for several years before being sold off and ultimately acquired by the Wisconsin & Southern. It currently wears a gold paint scheme and number 1501.

The locomotive shed in the early days from 1858 consisted of only the right half with two gates. In 1889 it was expanded with two gates on the left. Since 2012, the shed has only been used for musical performances. The turntable is still working, but is now only connected to one track. Switzerland, March 28, 2020.

Re 620 007-5 ahead of a train with hopper cars (Fans-u) in the switchyard of St. Margrethen. Waiting for the engineman. Switzerland, March 31, 2020.
Shunting accident at Buchs SG train station on Thursday morning. The route between Switzerland and Austria was blocked for four and a half hours. The incoming ÖBB freight train 45712 collided at 09:59:48 in the morning with a not profile-free last wagon of another freight train in the station. The train in the station was pushed a little too far south. By occupying the insulated rail, the entry signal was set to stop. The investigation report will show why the train from Austria was still able to enter and the engine driver did not recognize the other train that violated the clearance diagram. I'm not allowed to say more at the moment. Switzerland, November 10, 2022. (1/11)

(APPM = Associated Pulp & Paper Mills Ltd)
An aerial view taken from some APPM publicity material: the photo was taken during the 1960's; definitely later than Dec.1962 when the boilers were converted to oil-burning as there are no coal stacks.
The main mill is in the foreground, with the pulp mill (where all the pollution & smells came from) behind it. Middle left is the Burnie Board mill which made hardboard but closed in the early 1970's. Towards top right is East Mill, a wholely-owned APPM subsiduary known as Papermakers.
Beyond Papermakers, across the Emu River, is the suburb of Wivenhoe which also encompasses the industrial area known as Seddon, which was served by a spur line to the oil depots, tank farms and after 1970, an acid plant loader.
The eastern end of South Burnie station yard can be seen at middle right: there is an east-bound train on the main line (next to the water filtration plant & switchyard) and its loco, a single 'X' class, is in No.2 road. There is another 'X' class in No.3 road, next to a rake of cordwood wagons in No.4 road - this would be the yard shunter for the day. No.5 road is similarly occupied by wagons.
To add a bit of interest, at the lower end of South Burnie bank is a westbound goods with double 'X' class - the locos have already passed the Home signal thus must have been allowed to proceed but with Roads 1 - 5 blocked, I don't know where it will go in the yard...
"Philpott Dam is a concrete gravity dam on the Smith River in Franklin and Henry Counties in the state of Virginia. It impounds Philpott Lake.
The dam includes a spillway, a powerhouse, and switchyard. The top elevation of Philpott Dam is 1016 feet (310 m) msl and has an overall length of 920 feet (280 m). The maximum height above the streambed is 220 feet (67 m). The spillway has a crest elevation of 985 feet, msl and a total length of 120 feet (37 m)
The power house has two vertical shaft Francis turbines rated at 6700 kW each and a smaller unit rated at 600 kW."
This picture was taken in the early 1990s. When I first saw this sub in the late 1970s it had one 3-phase transformer and a bank of three single-phase transformers. Also, the switchyard was stuffed full of 4160-v breakers.
That's my rock dolly. It doubles for a bench hauler. This bench was donated by a gal in Campbell. It will fit in nicely under an oak tree up at the top of the property along our southeast fence line. A quaint knoll up there beckons, bordering Rancho Yerba Buena. Allure of fresh grub compels a cow to rise above usual topographic grazing patterns this time of year. They are gregarious, where one goes they will all go. Meanwhile I cracked the cow code: an equator trail extends out to both property lines, roughly level with the central watering hole. Being heavy and lazy cows will graze the altitude with water first, until it's grazed out. Then cows begin grazing zones immediately above and below the equator trail. Forced further and further afield, a network of trails forms resembling a railroad switchyard, branching out in each direction from the watering hole. A satellite view would show trails fanning out like tendons in a butterfly's wing. Cottonmouth from eating dry grass necessitates all paths lead to water. The quaint knoll isn't so easily reached. Cows would rather ascend slowly. But no level path leads to my new picinic area. Instead jutting upward steeply, a cow path runs at nearly a 50% grade to reach that shady promontory. From the valley floor below, the lone oak can be seen near the mountaintop, beside the fence line. The property line morphs into Aborn Road down low. It's just a fence up here, which runs up and over the ridge behind our lone tree. Being right above Eastridge Mall, I'm guessing the mall's name was drawn from this ridge. Unnamed today maybe east ridge morphed into the base of Mount Hamilton. The new bench goes under that oak tree. Private vista point for humans or a watch-tower for cows, in the grand scheme of things, my planned conquest aims to secure the southeast corner of Silicon Valley. It's good exercise. Adding another picnic area expands free range habitat. And as the pasture steward, my availability should be appreciated by the cows. They aren't too demanding. I like having big friends. I wish human approval could be so easily won.
