Something blocked all eastbound traffic on Interstate 10 west of Chiriaco Summit tonight.
I didn't have a CB radio but truckers appeared to know that using Pinto Road as a bypass would work. You can see the tractor-trailer rigs in the shadows at right of frame. Those who missed the Joshua Tree National Park/Cottonwood Springs exit were committed to the jam.
Cottonwood Springs Road was closed about a mile north of here at the Joshua Tree National Park entrance due to flash flood damage to park roadways.
The radio tower site at upper left of frame is known as Chuckwalla. Cell providers and everyone else who needs to cover this section of Interstate 10 has radios up there.
Based on publicly-released US Department of Energy information, the 500,000-volt power lines along Pinto Road (right side of image) are believed to connect Devers switchyard with Palo Verde in Arizona.
The odd lighting is due to storm clouds passing.

The Hetch Hetchy-Warnerville Substation/Switchyard encroaches on the bucolic farmland west of Oakdale, California. April 14, 2022.
With a train of about 14 cars behind double-headed GG-1s, this is probably a football special. It is at track speed as it heads north approaching the Landover Road overpass in Landover, MD. The GG-1s are painted in Amtrak's Phase 1 red and silver livery with a blue stripe separating the colors. These two units, the 909 and 926, can't be identified from the image because GG1's had no numerical identification visible from a head (or tail-on) angle. Note that some of the cars have banners attached to their sides. The electrical switchyard in the background provided power to the NE corridor in this area. I badly timed the photo to capture the nose of the lead GG1 as it entered the shade from the overpass.
This little switcher, built by Kaelble-Gmeinder in 1962 as no. 5275, is working at Dyckerhoff cement terminal at Hamburg Hohe Schaar switchyard.

Warnerville Road Switchyard. It was explained to me that this configuration is designed to divert power at an abrupt 90° angle. You can see the lines coming in from the top, draping up to the large tower then out left to right (or vice versa). Stanislaus County, California.

The days of Leipzig-Engelsdorf switchyard were already counted, when 155 083 left the yard with a freshly assembled freight train on a sunny Sunday afternoon in September 2018. Since December 2018 freights trains are now serviced at the newly built switchyard at Halle. The old yard at Leipzig-Engelsdorf is now used to store abandoned roling stock.

50 3659 has reached Aue with a freight train from Zwickau. The train is going through to Schwarzenberg, otherwise it had used the tracks on the left side, leading to Aue switchyard. Normally locos were running smokebox forward from Zwickau to Aue, except for one engineer, who prefered to run bunker forward on the uphill ride. In the background spoil heaps of uranium mines around Aue can be seen. Scanned ORWO slide.
50 3659 hat mit einem Güterzug aus Zwickau den Bahnhof Aue erreicht. Die Fahrt führt durch den Personenbahnhof weiter nach Schwarzenberg, ansonsten hätte der Zug die auf der linken Seite zu sehende Einfahrt zum Güterbahnhof genommen. Normalerweise fuhren die Lokomotiven Rauchkammer voraus in Richtung Aue, bis auf einen Lokführer, der die Bergfahrt tendervoraus bevorzugte. More pleased with this result. Burtynsky's large format photos usually don't have much sky. I was able to get more foreground subject, which appears more industrial with the crushed rock base. Waited a long time for a 2nd train to appear, but no luck. Cropped and increased contrast.
290 371 will be preserved by DB mostly in original condition, therefore it is waering the classic red livery. Nevertheless this switcher is still in regular service, as seen here at Leipzig-Engelsdorf switchyard.
290 371 ist Museumslok der DB und trägt darum die altrote Lackierung. Die Maschine ist dennoch im regulären Einsatz, wie hier im Rangierbahnhof Leipzig-Engelsdorf zu sehen.
No longer do men roll into Laramie Wyoming on a horse - nowadays it's the steel horse. A rather large switchyard with trains passing through every 10 to 15 minutes with coal or crops from the west.
It also looked like it has a large portion of railroad repair area. This is looking South out of city area, with eastern Sun coming from my left.
