North Western geep 4206 takes a break from switching the quarry west of Downtown Elmhurst on a nice evening in August 1986.

The crew of Capitol Transit steeple cab #054 is switching the Pennsylvania RR interchange along Kenilworth Ave NE in Washington DC, July 7, 1942. The local job picks up coal hoppers from the PRR here and delivers them to the Benning Power Plant on Benning Rd next to Capitol Transit's carbarn and yard. This track here was originally used by the WB&A via trackage rights in order to access their downtown terminal. When CT quit streetcar service on this line in 1949, the East Washington Railroad purchased it to access the plant and continue with the rather lucrative delivery of coal both from the PRR interchange here and from the B&O via Chesapeake Jct a few blocks away to the north. By 1955, the railroad was evicted (unlawfully) when Kenilworth Ave was converted to a freeway connecting East Capitol St nearby with the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. After a lengthy court battle, the little East Washington Railroad won and a new connection was made so the railroad could continue to access the Benning Plant.

A well aged CN geep switches the American Chemical Service plant in Griffith, Indiana. This is on all former C&O of Indiana rails. The "J" took over this business once Chessie pulled out. ACS getting a switch seems to be a rarity these days. So, while out on a morning bike ride, I was more than happy to her them banging cars around over here. I headed right over. Shot with a Pentax 67 on Fuji Velvia 100F. All this...located right off of the Oak Savannah bike trail, for your foaming pleasure.

Amtrak's Lorton, VA switch crew takes a quick break to pose for the photographer during their afternoon duties building the Auto Train. In 1985, it was apparently no problem for an un-ticketed 12 year old and his grandfather to wander around the Auto Train facility with a camera.
One of the last DB Köfs in freight service can be found in Schorndorf, Germany. They use this little guy to switch cars loaded with appliances in and out of the Bauknecht warehouse because the curve radius is too tight for any three or four axle engine. Here the Köf takes three empties from the warehouse down the spur toward the yard.
Great Lakes Central does not normally run on the weekends, but an extra OSTN was called on this Sunday to pick up a large cut of cars from the CSX interchange at Ann Pere in Howell. Now back in Owosso, the crew switches out the train, blocking it out for the next day's northbound. Leading the train is GLC's newest repaint, SD40-2 #382, followed by veteran GP35 #390 and GP38-2 #396.

Conductor Rick Eyler protects the shove as Norfolk Southern train K80 drops a Southern Railway covered hopper at the Cumberland Valley Cooperative.
GP15-1 1531 assisted by CF7 1500 switching in York, Pa. 1500 was the last CF7 built by ATSF. Older pic, recent travels to York have not found it in operation.
Maine Switching Services hauls CSX Sappi-4 up the steep grade into the Sappi mill complex on 6/16/2024.
LTEX GP9u 1585 was added at the mill crossing, since extra power was required to make the hill. The track splitting off from the mill lead runs to a small 7 track yard, the slurry tracks, as well as two spurs into the warehouse. The is another yard to the north of the mill as well as some storage tracks in the former log yard.
